Kvarngärdesskolan is a co-educational municipal day school in Uppsala. It follows Sweden’s national curriculum, Lgr22, and has no tuition fee. The important choice is between two English-language routes with different entry profiles.
The school’s current information page gives Thunmansgatan 47 as its address. Some page footers still display Råbyvägen 69A. Families visiting for the first time should confirm the correct entrance.
The two routes
The Bilingual Classes, usually shortened to BLIC, run from preschool class to Year 9. They are designed for children who are already bilingual in Swedish and English. The school asks families to use English regularly at home before applying.
Preschool class and Year 1 are taught entirely in English. Swedish increases from Year 2, reaching at least half of teaching time through Years 2–9. In Years 7–9, the school offers Cambridge courses in Mathematics and Science plus advanced English.
The English Class has a different purpose. It is for children who do not speak Swedish and will be in Sweden for a limited period. Children of university researchers receive priority. The school describes this as a temporary route, not a long-term substitute for BLIC.
The current English overview lists the English Class for Years 1–4. A separate Swedish page includes preschool class as well. Ask whether a child entering preschool class is eligible in the relevant school year. Both versions end the route after Year 4.
This distinction should drive the choice. BLIC expects bilingual ability on entry and builds a sustained Swedish-English education. The English Class starts from no Swedish and is intended for a short stay.
The wider school
Kvarngärdesskolan also has ordinary Swedish classes. The school says those classes extend through Year 7 in 2026–27 and will add later years progressively. That timetable is separate from BLIC, which the current programme page presents through Year 9.
The school is not an International Baccalaureate school. It uses Swedish national assessment and progression rules. Cambridge Mathematics and Science in the older BLIC years are courses within that Swedish programme, not an IB qualification.
The site includes after-school centres for preschool class through Year 3 and an after-school club from Year 4. There is no boarding.
Applying
Use the school’s online form for BLIC or the English Class. The form asks about the child’s home languages, previous teaching language, current school, intended start and expected departure from Sweden. These questions help the school identify the appropriate route.
The school says it will contact the family when a place is available. If no place exists, the application remains without an offer until one becomes available. The page does not promise a waiting-list position or a decision date.
After an offer, the family must also submit the municipal application through Mitt Skolval. Completing the school form alone does not finish the placement process.
The published route pages do not describe an entrance test. BLIC eligibility instead depends on existing bilingual ability and home use of English. Ask how the school assesses those conditions for the child’s age.
Fees, care and support
Teaching is free because this is a municipal school. After-school care is chargeable under Uppsala’s municipal tariff.
From 1 July 2026, the after-school-centre fee is based on household income after a SEK 10,000 deduction. The income ceiling used in the calculation is SEK 51,560 per month. The maximum first-child fee is SEK 1,031 per month; lower maxima apply to later children.
The after-school club has a fixed monthly fee. It is SEK 225 for the first child and SEK 170 for the second or third child. Fees are charged for 12 months. The income-based after-school centre is free below SEK 10,001 monthly income; this exemption does not apply to the fixed club fee.
The school’s student-health team includes a nurse, doctor, psychologist, counsellor, special educator, special teachers and school leaders. This shows the structure, not the English-language capacity for a specific need. Families should discuss support before choosing between BLIC and the English Class.
Our take
Choose BLIC for a genuinely Swedish-English bilingual child whose family may stay in Sweden. The route deliberately increases Swedish and continues through Year 9.
Choose the English Class for a younger child arriving without Swedish on a defined short posting. It should not be presented as easier BLIC admission. Its eligibility, priority and intended duration are different.
The Uppsala guide covers the city. The Sweden guide explains municipal schools, independent schools and queues.
