Uppsala’s English-facing schools are part of the Swedish system. They do not charge tuition and they do not replace the Swedish curriculum with an international one. The important questions are which language model suits the child, which year groups are available and how admission is decided.
Kvarngärdesskolan has two different routes
Kvarngärdesskolan is a municipal school whose Bilingual Classes, or BLIC, run from preschool class through Year 9. They are intended for pupils who are already bilingual in Swedish and English. Teaching begins entirely in English in preschool class and Year 1; Swedish then increases, reaching at least half of instruction from Year 2.
The same school also has an English Class for Years 1–4. This is a short-stay route for children who do not yet speak Swedish, with priority for children connected to visiting research families. It should not be confused with BLIC. Ask which route the child qualifies for and what happens when the family’s expected stay changes.
Families use a special application form and, if offered a place, complete the municipal process through Mitt Skolval. The school’s current contact page gives Råbyvägen 69A. Another official page still contains the former Thunmansgatan address, so confirm the building and entrance before visiting.
IES starts in Year 4
Internationella Engelska Skolan Uppsala is an independent publicly funded school for Years 4–9 on Genetikvägen. It follows the Swedish curriculum and teaches up to half of the programme in English. It is not an all-English international school and it does not cover the early primary years.
Admission is queue-based, with sibling priority. A child can be registered from 1 February in the year after birth. Families without BankID or a Swedish personal identity number are told to contact the school for help; lack of those identifiers should not simply be treated as a bar to joining the queue.
Queue registration is not a place offer. Ask for the child’s current queue date, the likely intake year and what must be updated if contact details or residency change.
Include upper secondary in the decision
Both routes finish after compulsory school. Uppsala Katedralskola offers a separate English-language IB pathway: a preparatory Pre-DP year followed by the two-year Diploma Programme. It has distinct application routes for applicants in Sweden and abroad. A place at Kvarngärdesskolan or IES does not guarantee admission.
For a pupil already in Years 8–9, compare upper-secondary entry requirements now. Ask how Swedish, mathematics and English grades will be assessed, and whether the child needs Pre-DP before the Diploma Programme. Use the current application calendar rather than old 2026 dates.
Make the shortlist concrete
For a young bilingual child, BLIC may offer the most continuous Swedish–English route. For a temporary research posting and a child with no Swedish in Years 1–4, the English Class addresses a different need. IES becomes relevant only from Year 4 and suits families comfortable with a Swedish curriculum delivered in two languages.
Visit the exact building, check travel from the intended home and ask what language is used in subjects, support sessions and after-school care. Also ask how the school supports a child whose English is strong but Swedish is new, or vice versa.
The Sweden country guide explains queues, municipal schools and independent schools. The language guide gives useful questions about bilingual teaching.
