Bladins International School of Malmö (BISM) is a privately run, co-educational day school at Stadiongatan 25E. It teaches in English using International Baccalaureate (IB) programmes. Public subsidy reduces fees for eligible families, but does not make attendance free.
It is worth considering for a child who needs continuity in English-medium international education. The two questions to settle first are whether the child qualifies for admission and which fee rate applies to the family.
Programmes and the next school stage
BISM offers the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and Middle Years Programme (MYP). The IB record confirms MYP authorisation since 23 October 1995 and PYP authorisation since 11 December 2000. It does not list the IB Diploma Programme.
The PYP connects subjects through shared themes and encourages children to investigate questions independently. The MYP covers eight subject groups, including sciences, humanities, mathematics, arts and design. Pupils study at least two languages.
The school’s 2026–27 placement table gives these main stages:
| BISM stage |
Swedish year comparison |
Birth years for 2026–27 |
| PYP1–PYP5 |
Preschool class, then Years 1–4 |
2020–2016 |
| MYP1–MYP5 |
Years 5–9 |
2015–2011 |
Placement uses the January–December calendar year, but prior schooling can justify a different class. These are the school’s year comparisons, not a claim that BISM follows the Swedish national curriculum.
MYP5 is the final school year, not a university-entry diploma. Its linked curriculum describes a culminating Personal Project: an extended piece of pupil-led work. Families must apply separately for upper-secondary education after BISM.
The MYP5 guide dates from the programme’s 2024–25 introduction. It describes functional English at entry, French or Spanish, standard or extended mathematics, and a choice of music or visual arts. Confirm which options and assessments apply in 2026–27.
For a child likely to enter a Swedish-language gymnasium, ask specifically how Swedish teaching prepares them for that destination’s entry requirements. English-medium schooling alone does not answer that question.
Eligibility and application
BISM’s admissions rules follow Chapter 24, section 3 of the Swedish Education Act. A child must meet at least one of these conditions:
- They are living in Sweden for a limited period.
- They have attended school abroad for an extended period and want to finish their education in Sweden.
- There are good grounds to expect them to leave Sweden for an extended period.
- English is their daily language with one or both guardians, and they know enough English to follow the teaching.
The Bladins preschool application page says BISM prioritises these categories in numerical order. Ask which evidence is needed for your category and how sibling priority operates within it. Eligibility does not guarantee space.
Applications go through the school’s linked OpenApply service. BISM accepts applications throughout the school year, but its page still mentions 2025–26 alongside 2026–27. Confirm the intended start date, class availability and any interview or assessment before changing schools.
Preschool and other Bladins schools
Bladins Preschool at Själlandstorget 1 is separate from BISM. It follows the Swedish preschool programme with an English profile. Its queue accepts children for admission after their first birthday; sibling priority requires a shared registered address.
The preschool, BISM and Bladins Grundskola have separate applications and queues. An application cannot be transferred between them. A preschool child needs a new BISM application, even with an older sibling already attending.
The school says siblings of preschool children may receive BISM priority if the family meets the entrance requirements. Neither a preschool place nor a sibling link waives those requirements.
Bladins Gymnasium is also a separate school. Do not interpret the shared name or the term “IB continuum” as an automatic route through BISM to the IB Diploma.
Learning support and daily care
BISM’s student-welfare team includes inclusive-education teachers, a nurse, counsellors and a psychologist. This establishes that support staff exist; it does not establish the help available for a particular child.
Send existing reports before accepting and request the proposed adjustments, staffing and any additional cost. For physical access, check classrooms, toilets, evacuation and the journey to lunch. The reviewed pages do not provide a complete accessibility assessment.
Lunch is served at Europaporten’s school restaurant. A physician’s certificate is required for a medical special diet. The kitchen avoids nuts, almonds and peanuts but does not guarantee absence of traces. Agree an individual allergy plan with the school.
Fritids is care outside teaching hours for families needing it because of work or study. Published term-time hours are 07:15–08:30 and 14:40–17:30. It also operates in school breaks, except public holidays and designated staff-training days.
Care has a separate application and an income-related municipal maximum-fee scale, known as maxtaxa. The school aims to register applicants within a week; confirm availability rather than treating that aim as a guaranteed start.
The linked application requires evidence of both parents’ work or study. It also requires families to record attendance and report changes in employment, study or parental leave. Ask how these requirements apply to your household.
The form bills care over 12 months, unlike the ten-month school-fee schedule. It allows a sibling reduction with confirmation of a sibling’s preschool or care place elsewhere. Breaching the conditions can lead to cancellation of the care place.
Ask for the current care calendar and a household-specific quotation. The form contains older curriculum and income-threshold references, and the linked calendar still carries 2025–26 dates. Also confirm normal lesson times and any transport arrangements for the child’s class.
Fees for 2026–27
The published subsidised rates require the right to reside in Sweden and registration with the authorities. Families without Swedish registration must request the unpublished gross fee, meaning the unsubsidised rate.
| Stage |
Per term |
Per month, August–May |
Calculated ten-month total |
| PYP1–PYP5 |
SEK 16,325 |
SEK 3,265 |
SEK 32,650 |
| MYP1–MYP5 |
SEK 17,400 |
SEK 3,480 |
SEK 34,800 |
The annual totals above are our calculations from the school’s explicit ten-payment schedule. They are not a separate school quotation.
A SEK 20,000 non-refundable enrolment fee is additional and payable once. It does not apply to preschool. For a new pupil paying subsidised fees for all ten months, the calculated first-year total is SEK 52,650 for PYP or SEK 54,800 for MYP, before extras.
Obtain a complete offer covering care, meals, trips, devices and any specialist support. The fee page does not establish every inclusion, payment deadline, late-start adjustment or cancellation condition.
Withdrawal can cost more than the monthly fee
The withdrawal form requires three months’ notice or three months of gross, unsubsidised fees instead. Do not budget a short-notice departure using only the subsidised monthly amount.
The website says termination takes effect on the last day of the third month after notice is received. Submit the form signed by both legal guardians and obtain written confirmation of the effective date.
If the child stops using the place during notice, the website describes liability for gross fees in term time and compensation for lost municipal funding outside term time. Both guardians can be pursued for the full liability.
The school does not publish the gross rate or a worked example of that compensation. Ask for a dated departure calculation before signing the enrolment agreement.
To stop renewal for the next academic year, the school requires its form by the end of February. Otherwise the place renews, up to MYP5. Confirm how this deadline interacts with the ordinary notice rule.
Moving to another school, or leaving while no longer registered as residing in Sweden, also terminates the place. That does not establish that charges are waived. Return all borrowed equipment and books before the final day.
Fritids needs its own withdrawal form and two months’ notice, or two months’ fees instead. Withdrawing from school does not replace that separate step.
Our take
Compare Malmö International School if avoiding compulsory-school tuition is important. Malmö city identifies MIS as a municipal PYP/MYP school without tuition fees. Assess its admissions rules and support separately; the shared IB framework does not make the schools interchangeable.
