ISGR: English IB or the Swedish national curriculum

ISGR has an English-medium IB section through age 16 and a Swedish-curriculum section with up to half its teaching in English. Choose the section first: eligibility, application dates and fees differ.

ISGR offers two distinct school options in Gothenburg. The International Section suits eligible families seeking English-medium International Baccalaureate (IB) education through age 16. The Swedish National Section is more relevant for families planning to remain in Sweden and wanting the national curriculum with substantial teaching in English. They have different admission rules and application calendars.

Choose the section before applying

The International Section teaches the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) and Middle Years Programme (MYP), for ages 5–16. It does not offer the IB Diploma Programme, the upper-secondary qualification. A child continuing beyond MYP will need another school; discuss that transition before joining in the later years.

The Swedish National Section follows Sweden’s curriculum, with up to 50% of teaching in English. ISGR calls preschool class through grade 6 LgrP, and grades 7–9 LgrM. The school describes this section as an option for long-term residents seeking both local and international perspectives. That makes it worth considering, but it is not a wholly English-medium alternative. Compare the sections.

Two campuses, with placement to confirm

ISGR is a co-educational day school. Guldheden is at Guldhedsgatan 6, near Wavrinskys Plats; Götaberg is at Molinsgatan 6, near Kapellplatsen. Both are accessible by tram.

Guldheden serves younger pupils, with age-appropriate outdoor areas, a football pitch, library and specialist teaching rooms. PAL, the school’s before- and after-school learning provision, also has rooms there. The campus page announced a 4,000 m² expansion for August 2025: 15 classrooms, a dining hall, music rooms and a sports hall. Since that is a dated announcement, confirm which facilities are now in use.

Götaberg is a listed building serving Middle Years pupils in both sections, with science laboratories, design workshops, a library and language and arts rooms. The descriptions also place some Middle Years teaching at Guldheden. Confirm your child’s actual campus and childcare arrangements before judging the commute. Campus information.

International admissions: eligibility comes first

Applications are accepted throughout the year. The school says it reviews complete applications within 2–3 weeks, but an offer depends on a vacancy. It gives priority to relocating families, particularly pupils with previous international-school experience.

Its international admissions page sets out four eligibility categories under chapter 24, section 4 of Sweden’s Education Act. A pupil must meet at least one:

  1. Residence in the Gothenburg Region for a confirmed limited period.
  2. A significant part of their education completed abroad.
  3. Current residence in Gothenburg, with a move abroad planned within 12–18 months.
  4. English spoken daily at home and sufficient English to follow instruction.

The school lists priority in that order. Ask admissions which category applies to your child rather than assuming that a preference for English teaching is enough.

The application requires a completed form, previous school reports, passport or identification, relevant evidence of relocation or employment in Gothenburg, and a Swedish personal number or tax-registration confirmation. International enquiries and visits go through admissions@staff.isgr.se.

National admissions: a fixed annual window

The Swedish National Section accepts applications through its online form while the application window is open. Telephone calls and emails do not count as applications.

The annual window is 1 October–7 December for the following academic year. Applications for 2027/28 therefore open on 1 October 2026. The 2026/27 window ran from 1 October to 7 December 2025 and has closed. Late applications are only occasionally accepted; enquire at antagning@staff.isgr.se. The office is closed in July and on public holidays.

Priority goes first to siblings already in the National Section: children with the same legal guardians, or half-siblings sharing residence and the same guardian. Next come residents of Centrum, Majorna/Linné and Örgryte/Härlanda, followed by other applicants. Published information does not establish current vacancies or waiting-list length. National admissions.

International fees: read the dated policy

The 2026/27 fee policy specifies SEK 49,900 for PYP0–MYP4, not every international grade. It says coverage extends through MYP5 in 2027/28. Confirm the applicable year and grade; nationality itself provides no exemption.

The SEK 12,475 enrolment payment counts toward tuition when the child attends. It is not an extra charge on top of SEK 49,900. It is non-refundable after acceptance and cannot transfer to another term. The policy sets late withdrawal at SEK 12,475, resolving the website FAQ’s conflicting SEK 11,880 figure.

Private payers are billed by term and companies annually; email invoices and instalments are available. Full-term fees remain due for partial-term attendance. Withdrawal must be submitted through OpenApply: normally 30 days before leaving, but by 31 October 2026 for December departures, or 30 April 2027 for June departures. Late notice incurs the withdrawal charge. Annual prepayment permits a spring-fee refund only with withdrawal by 31 October. The third fee-paying child receives a 50% discount.

The fee information page says ISGR offers no general financial aid. Some employers cover fees. Non-payment or repeated late payment may put the place at risk.

The same page warns that if a child is not registered in Gothenburg with a Swedish personal number, public funding may be unavailable and the family or employer may face the full educational cost. That amount is not published. Obtain an individual quotation from financeoffice@staff.isgr.se before accepting.

The SEK 49,900 table concerns the International Section, not the National Section. For either section, ask separately about applicable childcare and other additional costs; do not treat the international tuition figure as a complete family budget.

Our view

Choose the International Section if your child meets its eligibility rules and an English-medium IB education through MYP supports your plans. Choose the National Section if Swedish-curriculum continuity is the priority and its teaching-language balance suits your child.
