Malmö International School (MIS) is a co-educational municipal day school at Lingatan 2. The City of Malmö runs the school, and English is the language of instruction.
MIS is authorised for the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) and Middle Years Programme (MYP). Its published age range is 3–16. It does not offer boarding or an upper-secondary programme.
Programme and age placement
Early Years serves children aged 3–5 within the PYP. The school day is four hours, and children must be toilet trained. The same admissions priorities apply to Early Years, PYP and MYP applicants.
The school places children by age:
| MIS level |
Published age |
| Early Years |
3–5 |
| PYP 1–6 |
6–12 |
| MYP 1–4 |
12–16 |
Age placement does not by itself secure admission. A place also depends on the admissions category, available capacity and any required municipal funding agreement.
MIS ends after MYP 4. Pupils must apply separately to an upper-secondary school. The City warns that fluent Swedish is required for Swedish-medium upper-secondary routes and advises long-term families to consider the child’s Swedish development.
Admissions priorities
The school publishes three applicant groups in priority order:
- Children of parents working or studying in higher education in the region, and international families moving to the region for a limited employment or study period.
- Children moving to the region who have spent a major part of their education at an international school abroad and need to continue in that setting.
- Children living permanently in Sweden, if places remain. Applicants in this group need English at the level required for their age and curriculum.
The school recommends living in Malmö municipality. A child living in another municipality cannot secure a place until that municipality agrees to pay Malmö’s school charge.
The public page does not state a single annual application deadline or publish current waiting-list lengths. Contact the school for the relevant year group instead of using Malmö’s ordinary neighbourhood-school timetable.
Fees and after-school care
Compulsory education from PYP 1 through MYP 4 is publicly funded and tuition-free. Early Years is preschool provision and carries an income-related municipal maximum charge.
After-school care is available through PYP 6. For an Early Years child, guardians must work or study full time and provide evidence and a schedule. Other eligibility and fee rules depend on the child’s age and household circumstances.
The school’s pages do not provide one amount that applies to every family. Ask Malmö for the household-specific Early Years or after-school-care calculation. Do not treat a municipal funding amount as a fee charged to parents.
Student support
The student welfare team includes a school nurse, PYP and MYP counsellors, a psychologist, a learning-support coordinator and learning-support staff. The school also has an anti-bullying team and a study and careers counsellor.
This list does not confirm the support available for one child. Share reports during the application and ask how language, learning, medical or emotional needs would be supported in the proposed class.
Moving to upper secondary
There is no automatic progression from MIS to an IB upper-secondary programme. Malmö Borgarskola is a separate municipal school offering both the IB Diploma Programme and Career-related Programme.
For Borgarskola’s current annual cycle, applications to Pre-DP and Pre-CP run from 15 January to 15 February. Applicants then take English and Mathematics tests in March. Pre-CP also includes an interview.
DP1 and DP2 do not have open admission. The Career-related Programme accepts new pupils only into Pre-CP, not CP1 or CP2. These conditions matter if a family hopes to continue in English after MIS.
How to compare it
MIS is a public English-medium option with specific admissions priorities. Bladins International School of Malmö is a separate independent international school with its own eligibility rules and fees.
Compare the legal admissions category, language development, final year offered, support plan and daily journey. A family staying in Sweden should plan the upper-secondary transition well before MYP 4.
