Fichte-Gymnasium Karlsruhe, French bilingual study towards Abibac

Fichte is a public German Gymnasium with a French bilingual route from Grade 5. Pupils who continue the route can work towards Abibac, combining the German Abitur with the French Baccalauréat. This is distinct from the European School's programme.

Fichte-Gymnasium is a co-educational public secondary school in central Karlsruhe. It follows Baden-Württemberg’s Gymnasium route, leading to the German Abitur. There is no boarding and no international-school tuition.

Its distinctive option is a French bilingual route that can lead to Abibac. This gives successful pupils both the Abitur and French Baccalauréat.

That is different from the multilingual European curriculum at European School Karlsruhe. Compare the two when both programmes and admission routes are realistic for the child.

Two routes for French

Pupils choosing French as their first foreign language join the bilingual route automatically. They receive more French teaching from Grade 5 and later study selected subjects through French.

Grade Published bilingual provision
5–6 Intensive French, generally one additional weekly lesson
7 French plus geography mainly through French
8 French plus history mainly through French
9 French plus social studies mainly through French
10 French plus geography, history and social studies through French
Upper stage Continued French and the three bilingual subjects, with the option to take Abibac

After Grade 7, pupils decide whether to continue the bilingual profile. Continuing to that point does not compel a pupil to take Abibac.

The school’s two French pages are not perfectly aligned. A page dated February 2024 says the ordinary route begins French as a second foreign language in Grade 6. The current subject-comparison page says it starts in the second half of Grade 5.

Ask which timetable applies to the intended entry year. This discrepancy is especially important for a child transferring into Grade 5 or 6.

Is it a realistic fit?

Fichte suits a pupil who can study the German Gymnasium curriculum and wants substantial French. The bilingual route adds content teaching in French, so it requires more than interest in a weekly language lesson.

Ask how the school assesses German and French for a pupil arriving from another system. The Grade 5 notice does not explain later-year transfer placement or language support.

French exchanges and projects are offered, but places are not automatic. The school says pupils register individually, with bilingual-route pupils receiving priority if demand exceeds available exchange places.

The 2026 school profile also describes science and technology provision, social projects, lower-school afternoon supervision until 16:00 and a canteen. Request the current timetable and charges for supervision and meals.

Location and school day

The address is Sophienstrasse 12–16, 76133 Karlsruhe. The school identifies Karlstor as the nearest tram stop, served by lines 2, 4 and 6. Its canteen is in a separate building at Sophienstrasse 2.

Test the route from home and ask which buildings the pupil uses. If comparing the European School, include both journeys rather than assuming that two Karlsruhe schools have similar commutes.

Grade 5 registration

The latest detailed notice available for this review covers 2026/27. Its dates have passed:

  • open day: 28 February 2026;
  • online registration: 7–12 March 2026;
  • personal registration: 9–12 March 2026;
  • signed documents due by 12:00 on 12 March.

The order in which applications arrived did not matter, and a child could be registered at only one secondary school. The child did not have to attend registration.

Do not reuse those dates for 2027/28. Ask the school for the next notice or for guidance about a transfer during 2026/27.

Costs and support

As a public Gymnasium, Fichte does not publish private-school tuition. That does not mean every service is free. Ask about meals, afternoon supervision, materials, trips and exchange costs.

If a pupil needs language or learning support, discuss provision before registration. A general school-profile description does not confirm available specialist support for an individual child.

Our take

Choose Fichte when the pupil can follow a German Gymnasium programme and wants serious French study with a possible Abibac outcome. The decision after Grade 7 provides a point to reconsider the full bilingual route.

Choose the European School Karlsruhe when its language sections, European Baccalaureate and eligibility rules better fit the family.
