Schools in Karlsruhe: European Baccalaureate or Abibac?

European School Karlsruhe and Fichte-Gymnasium offer different multilingual routes. The choice depends on the child’s teaching language and intended qualification, not simply an interest in French.

European School Karlsruhe and Fichte-Gymnasium are both day schools, but they serve different educational needs. ESK starts with nursery and follows the European Schools curriculum. Fichte begins with Klasse 5 and follows Baden-Württemberg’s Gymnasium curriculum.

Two different uses of language

ESK has German, English and French sections leading to the European Baccalaureate. The section is principally determined by the child’s dominant language. Other languages form part of the curriculum; this is not an English-only school or an International Baccalaureate (IB) programme.

Fichte is a public German Gymnasium with a French bilingual pathway. Pupils who choose French as their first foreign language receive additional French teaching, then study selected subjects in French. Continuing the pathway into the upper school can lead to Abibac, the German Abitur together with the French Baccalauréat. The school describes a choice after Klasse 7 about continuing bilingually. See its French-stream explanation.

For a child already educated in English or French, ask ESK about language-section placement. For a child entering German secondary education who wants to develop strong French, discuss Fichte’s pathway and German-language readiness. These are starting points for enquiries, not guarantees of admission.

Check eligibility before comparing costs

ESK’s admissions rules distinguish three categories. Category I mainly covers eligible European-institution staff families. Category II depends on a financing agreement. Other families apply under Category III, after the first two categories and subject to capacity.

Category I is tuition-exempt. For paying categories, consult the 2026–27 European Schools fee table and request ESK’s written calculation. Its linked school information sheet still carries a 2025–26 label. An older invoice schedule should not be mistaken for this year’s confirmed amount.

Fichte is a public school, so the comparison is not between two international-school tuition bills. Ask separately about meals, afternoon supervision and trips.

Admissions and journeys

Fichte’s Klasse 5 notice for 2026–27 required the signed application by noon on 12 March 2026. That deadline has passed. Families moving now should enquire about transfers; families planning 2027 entry need the next notice.

ESK is at Albert-Schweitzer-Strasse 1, north of the centre. Fichte is at Sophienstrasse 12–16 in the centre. Check each journey from the proposed home, including the afternoon return. A suitable programme is of limited practical use if a young child cannot manage the daily route.

The Karlsruhe overview and Germany guide provide the wider context. Take the child’s recent reports, teaching-language history and intended start date into the first admissions discussion.

Friendly orientation, not formal admissions advice. Always confirm dates with the school.
