European School Karlsruhe, or ESK, is a co-educational Type 1 European School at Albert Schweitzer Strasse 1 in Karlsruhe. It is a day school and does not provide boarding.

The school follows the European Schools curriculum from Nursery to Secondary Year 7. Pupils work towards the European Baccalaureate, which is different from both the International Baccalaureate Diploma and the German Abitur.

As a Type 1 school, ESK belongs to the intergovernmental European Schools system and primarily serves children of European institution staff. Other families may apply when their admission category and available capacity allow it. It is worth considering if your family wants a multilingual education leading to the European Baccalaureate; establish eligibility and language placement before treating it as an available option.

Admission categories

Category I covers eligible children of staff who have served a European Community institution for at least one year. These pupils are exempt from the annual tuition set by the Board of Governors. Families should confirm their status with employer evidence.

Category II applies when a company or institution has an agreement with ESK. The school also says a family can conclude an agreement to seek admission through this category. Obtain the exact contractual terms before relying on that route.

Category III covers other families after Categories I and II. Admission depends on remaining places. The Director must preserve capacity for later Category I and II arrivals when another admission would require an additional class.

The school’s 2025/26 information sheet refers to a Category III waiting list. The reviewed 2026 material does not establish whether the same process continues. Ask about the proposed year group and section rather than assuming a queue exists.

Stages and languages

Nursery normally begins in September of the calendar year when the child turns four. Primary Year 1 begins in the calendar year when the child turns six.

Secondary education lasts seven years and ends with the European Baccalaureate. The structure page gives a usual secondary day of 8:05 to 15:40.

German, English and French sections run from Nursery through the Baccalaureate. Language 1, or L1, is normally the child’s section language.

A pupil whose dominant language is another official EU language may enter one of those sections as a SWALS pupil. SWALS means Students Without a Language Section. Mother-tongue L1 teaching is subject to the European Schools conditions.

Language 2, or L2, begins in Primary Year 1 and is German, English or French. A third language, L3, begins in Secondary Year 1. A fourth may begin in Secondary Year 4 (S4), and a fifth in Secondary Year 6 (S6).

The Nursery page says parents of a bilingual child choose a section, which continues into Primary. One weekly afternoon of European Hours brings the three section languages together through shared activities.

Families should base the application on the child’s actual language history. They should also ask how the Director will determine L1, section placement and any language support.

Application process

Applications are made online, with forms available in English, French and German. The school has not published a current universal deadline in the reviewed sources.

An applicant arriving from another system normally enters the year corresponding to the previous school level. The school usually places the child in the dominant-language section and may require a placement assessment.

The 2026 English form requires a €200 registration fee before the file is processed. The fee does not apply when the family’s employer already has an agreement with ESK. An incomplete file is not processed.

The form does not say whether the fee is refundable after an unsuccessful application. Admission is final only after written confirmation from the Director and completion of all required documents.

Families in the French section may be eligible for a school bursary from AEFE, the Agency for French Education Abroad, through the French Embassy in Germany. This is separate from the Category I tuition exemption.

Tuition for 2026/27

The Board of Governors publishes the following Category III fees for pupils newly enrolled from 2013/14 onwards. These are the figures relevant to a new applicant.

Cycle Annual tuition
Nursery €4,457.80
Primary €6,129.55
Secondary €8,358.46

Category III pupils whose enrolment predates 2013/14 use a lower Board table. The school should identify the correct line for any returning pupil whose status is unclear.

The 2026/27 Board table gives €16,746.59 for a new Category II agreement in Karlsruhe. The figure for an existing agreement remains tba, meaning it has yet to be announced. Category I pupils pay no Board tuition.

The Board describes its published figures as guidance and tells families to confirm them with the school.

Local payment and withdrawal terms

Karlsruhe’s local fee information is still labelled 2025/26. Its tuition amounts and €15,443.17 new-agreement figure are therefore not current 2026/27 prices.

The 2026 enrolment form does state that the first partial invoice is not refunded. It also says there is no reduction in the first admission year. Administration and swimming-pool charges remain due for the whole year.
