Bonn International School: IB education from age 3 to Grade 12

Bonn International School offers the full IB continuum in English, with German taught in every grade. It is a day school in southern Bonn, not a Düsseldorf campus. Its current online fee table is undated, so families planning for 2026–27 should confirm the figures in writing.

Bonn International School (BIS) is a co-educational day school at Martin-Luther-King-Straße 14, 53175 Bonn. It accepts pupils from age three through Grade 12 and offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) continuum. English is the main language of instruction; German is taught at different proficiency levels in every grade, including to native speakers.

This is a practical option for families seeking English-medium education in Bonn. It is not the International School of Düsseldorf, which is in another city, and it is not the smaller Independent Bonn International School. It also does not use the admissions categories or European Baccalaureate curriculum of a Type I European School.

BIS has no boarding provision. A family considering Cologne or another town outside Bonn should test the commute at school-run times before choosing where to live.

Programme and school day

BIS describes itself as open to children aged 3–18, whether locally based or from an international background. The school’s About page reports more than 800 pupils from 80 countries and 110 teachers from 25 countries. These are the school’s own published figures.

The school day starts at 08:20 and ends between 15:15 and 15:30, depending on the year group. After-school care is available until 18:00, and some activities run until 19:30. The school describes the day as phone-free.

Pupils work primarily in English. English as an Additional Language (EAL) support is available for children who are still developing proficiency. German is compulsory in every grade and is organised by level.

The final qualification is the IB Diploma, not the German Abitur. The school’s pages showed different IB-result summaries when reviewed: the About page reported a 2026 average of 34 points and 20% of the cohort above 40, while the homepage displayed an average of 35. Treat both as school-reported snapshots, not a forecast for an individual pupil.

Admissions

Applications are made through OpenApply and can be submitted throughout the year. There is no published application deadline, but admission depends on a place being available. The school warns that some grades are full.

A complete file includes:

  • the child’s passport;
  • proof of measles immunisation;
  • two years of school reports;
  • a confidential current-school recommendation for applicants to Grades 1–12.

The admissions team reviews the application only after the required documents have been submitted. An application does not create a contract; the contract begins after the school offers a place and the family accepts it.

The admissions page still referred to 18 August 2025 as the start date for new pupils when reviewed on 4 September 2026. The open-house page also lacked a current 2026–27 event. Ask admissions for the correct entry date, available visit options and space in the intended grade.

Fees: confirm the school year

BIS’s fee page publishes the figures below but does not label the table with an academic year. The German-language page shows the same amounts. Do not assume these are the 2026–27 charges without written confirmation from the school.

One-time admission fee

  • Early Learning 3–5: €2,250. No further admission fee is charged when the child moves to Grade 1.
  • Grade 1 and above: €4,500.
  • An additional child from the same family: €2,250.

Annual tuition as shown on the undated page

Grade Published age Published annual tuition
Early Learning 3 3 €12,967
Early Learning 4 4 €12,967
Early Learning 5 5 €17,503
Grades 1–5 6–11 €19,938
Grades 6–10 12–16 €22,525
Grades 11–12 16–18 €23,457

The school says these fees include school day trips, iPads through Grade 7, university and careers guidance, counselling, English-language development, access to laboratories, books, instruments and learning materials, and its co-curricular programme. Ask whether any activities, transport, meals, devices or examinations generate additional charges for your year group.

BIS is a non-profit association funded by fees and reports that it receives no public subsidy for daily operations or personnel.

Additional charges apply to pupils enrolled in the Learning Support Programme after a diagnosed learning difference and internal or external evaluation. They do not apply to EAL support.

Support tier Additional annual fee shown
Tier 0 No additional fee
Tier 1 €4,000
Tier 2 €8,000
Tier 3 €12,000

A means-tested financial-assistance programme is available. Eligibility and award amounts must be confirmed with admissions.

Our take

Choose BIS if you want a full IB pathway in English, German teaching in every grade and a campus in Bonn. It is particularly relevant to internationally mobile families who need a familiar qualification but expect to live locally.
