European School Luxembourg I is a Type 1 European School, part of the intergovernmental European Schools system. Its campus is at 23, Boulevard Konrad Adenauer, L-1115 Luxembourg, on Kirchberg. It is a day school without boarding, teaching from nursery through the European Baccalaureate.
It is a strong option for an eligible family seeking a multilingual education, provided the child’s language and residence rules allow placement here. Luxembourg I and Luxembourg II share admissions rules: a preference for Kirchberg does not guarantee a place there.
Can your child get a place?
Category I families, where a parent has worked for a European institution or related body for at least a year, have priority and pay no tuition. Category III families are admitted only if places remain after Categories I and II, and never into a class that already has 27 or more pupils. The reviewed sources do not establish a current Category III waiting list.
Language and address then decide between the two schools. Luxembourg I alone hosts the Bulgarian, Spanish, Estonian, Finnish, Lithuanian, Latvian, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese and Swedish sections or mother-tongue provision. For German, English and French, new residents normally go to Luxembourg II; families already living in the north-east zone of the map in the joint 2026–27 rules are assigned to Luxembourg I. Our guide to European School admissions explains the categories, the full language table, SWALS and other-national-language rules, and the application timetable.
Applying and starting school
The standard 2026–27 application period ran from 2 to 27 March 2026, with replies by 12 June 2026. These dates have passed, and the reviewed material does not publish a 2027 window. Contact admissions about a late application or the next cycle.
Pupils moving from nursery in 2025–26 to Primary Year 1 did not need to re-enrol. Forms for Language 2, the second language studied, and religion or ethics were distributed in class.
The general school-year start was 2 September 2026. The memorandum distinguishes nursery pupils returning at 8:30 that day from new nursery pupils, whose staggered starts begin 3 September. Families should use their individual joining instructions.
Arrange a visit to the relevant section and test the Kirchberg journey at the expected arrival time. The parents’ association provides a further contact for practical arrangements.
Fees and payments
Category I pupils pay no tuition. For Category III, the Board’s 2026/27 table and the school’s 2026/27 enrolment form give different amounts, for example €8,358.46 against €8,063.46 for secondary. Ask which tariff will appear on your invoice. The admissions guide compares both tables and explains the NATO/NSPA rate, sibling reductions and the non-refundable 25% deposit.
The 2027 European Baccalaureate registration fee is €108.10 for pupils in Secondary Year 7 in all categories. It appears on the October invoice and is due 31 March 2027. The memorandum also explicitly applies additional school costs to all categories: Category I’s tuition exemption is not an exemption from every charge.
Our judgment
For an English-medium IB route, compare the International School of Luxembourg. For a British curriculum, compare St George’s. For the French national baccalauréat, compare Vauban: a French-language section at Luxembourg I leads to a different qualification. The Athénée and Lycée Michel Lucius are also worth examining if you want a state-school English-language route.
