Athénée de Luxembourg: public English-medium route to the IB Diploma

The Athénée is a state secondary school with a seven-year English-medium route towards the IB Diploma. It is attractive on cost, but admission is selective and French remains important. The published 2026 second round was only for Grades 10 and 11.

The Athénée de Luxembourg is a co-educational state secondary school at 24 boulevard Pierre Dupong. Its international route is taught mainly in English and runs from Grade 7 to Grade 13.

The school is also a regular Luxembourgish lycée. These are separate routes with different language patterns and qualifications, so ask specifically about the international classes.

The Athénée is a day school. It does not provide boarding, a host family or residential supervision.

Who it suits

This is a strong option for a pupil who wants an English-medium IB route without private-school tuition. The pupil must also be ready to study French and work within a selective state-school admissions process.

The school reports about 1,400 pupils, including almost 200 in its international classes. Those figures describe a substantial programme inside a much larger lycée, not a stand-alone international campus.

The fit is weaker when a child needs guaranteed mid-year entry, extensive beginner-language teaching or residential care. Support exists, but the school publishes no entitlement to a place or to a particular support package.

Seven years, but only two are the IB Diploma Programme

Grades 7–9 are preparatory years and Grades 10–11 are intermediate years designed by the Athénée. They are not the IB Middle Years Programme.

The school’s assessment policy says Grades 7–11 follow Luxembourg rules on marking and promotion. English and French are treated as key subjects in this route.

Grades 12–13 are the two-year International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme. The official IB directory records the Athénée as a state, co-educational day school authorised for the Diploma Programme since 2 March 2010.

The IB directory currently lists English A Literature, French B and German B. It also lists history, economics, visual arts, mathematics, biology, chemistry and physics. Confirm the actual combination available to the entering cohort.

English A Literature centres on studying literary works. French B and German B are language-learning courses for pupils with prior knowledge, not beginner courses. The letters identify course types, not CEFR proficiency levels.

The Luxembourg Ministry describes the IB as legally equivalent to the national secondary leaving diploma. The school’s 2021 policy says French B is required for that Luxembourg equivalence, so confirm this point before choosing subjects.

The same policy says progression from Diploma Year 1 to Year 2 is normally open. However, missed internal deadlines and weak performance can lead the school to withhold final-exam registration and return a pupil to Year 1.

Languages

English is the teaching language in the international route, but it is not an English-only education. French is assessed for later entry and remains part of the Diploma pathway.

The 2021 language policy says English A and French B are compulsory in the Diploma Programme. German B can meet part of the third-language requirement for some pupils. Grades 7–9 also include Luxembourgish.

Treat those policy details as a starting point because the document was created in 2021. Ask for the current timetable, subject-choice rules and any language exemption before accepting a place.

The current 2026 admissions position

The live admissions page was updated on 4 May 2026. It announced a second round for Grade 10 and Grade 11 only for 2026–27.

Other grades had no places in that specific round. This does not prove that those grades will remain closed in future years.

Pupils who took part in the first admissions round could not apply for or sit the second-round tests.

For Grade 10, applicants had to complete Grade 9 or S3 by July 2026. They had to be born before 31 August 2012.

Grade 10 tests cover English, mathematics and French. The live page sets the French minimum at A2 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), a scale of language proficiency.

For Grade 11, applicants had to complete Grade 10 or S4 by July 2026. They had to be born before 31 August 2011.

Grade 11 tests cover the same three subjects. The live page sets the French minimum at CEFR A2+.

Online registration ran from 5 May to 27 July 2026 at 18:00, labelled CET by the school. Registered applicants then received the test programme, portfolio requirements and practical instructions.

The portfolio deadline was 3 August at 18:00 CET. The on-site written tests and oral interview are on 7 September, with results on 9 September 2026.

As of 4 September, the September test is only for candidates already registered in this round. It is not a fresh application opportunity.

The school says these dates cannot be changed for personal convenience. It does not publish the teaching start arrangements for successful second-round candidates, so ask admissions before planning the move.

Ignore the old admissions details in the FAQ

The school-hosted FAQ still gives a 1 March 2025 deadline. It also states older French thresholds of A2+ for Grade 10 and B1 for Grade 11.

Those details conflict with the live May 2026 admissions page. For the published second round, use A2 for Grade 10 and A2+ for Grade 11.

No 2027 dates were published when this guide was checked. Do not roll the 2026 dates forward by one year.

Learning support and accessibility

The live support page lists regular English, French and mathematics support for the first three international years. Pupils in all international classes can request appointment-based support at least three days ahead.

The 2021 inclusion policy describes a school inclusion commission, individual planning and reasonable adjustments. Examples include extra time, breaks, adapted papers, assistive technology and human assistance.

That policy also says the building has lifts and accessible toilets. It mentions support for mobility, vision, hearing and learning needs, but it does not promise that every need can be met.

Share reports and required adjustments before assessment. Ask who will approve them, whether IB accommodations can be secured, and whether staff capacity is available in the proposed year.

The school’s psycho-social service offers confidential individual support, mediation and prevention work, including on violence. It also helps with family difficulties and educational guidance.

What families pay

The school-hosted FAQ says the Athénée is public and that all classes are free. The Ministry also identifies the Athénée’s English IB route as part of Luxembourg’s public international offer.

There is no published tuition deposit, capital levy or private-school withdrawal liability. We found no current fee contract for this state-school route.

Compulsory textbooks are free in Luxembourg’s public international classes. The school FAQ says compulsory literature for language classes may be an exception.

Lunch is paid for using a prepaid pupil card in the canteen. The school did not publish a current 2026–27 meal tariff on the pages reviewed.

The same FAQ lists €50 to replace a lost locker key, but it also contains stale admissions information. Confirm that charge and ask about trips or other extras before enrolment.

Domestic public transport in second class is free in Luxembourg. Cross-border travel and first-class rail remain chargeable, which matters for families living outside the country.

Residence and daily care

An admission offer is not an immigration permission. EU citizens staying longer than three months must meet the residence conditions and register with their commune.

Third-country families usually need the appropriate authorisation before entering Luxembourg. Family-reunification rules depend on the parent’s status, custody and supporting documents.

Do not treat school admission as a route for a child to live alone in Luxembourg. The Athénée publishes no boarding or guardianship service.
