Schools in Mol: the Kempen, the commute and the European School

Mol is a Flemish town in the Kempen, well away from the school markets of Antwerp, Brussels and Eindhoven. Its best-known international employers are research institutions. Decide early whether your child will join the European School or a Dutch-language local school, because the alternatives are a long commute away.

Mol is a municipality in the Kempen (Campine) region, in the east of Antwerp province and not far from the Dutch border. It is not a suburb of Antwerp or Brussels. School choice here is narrower than in a city, so it pays to settle the school question before the house.

Why international families come to Mol

Two research institutions stand out. Belgium’s nuclear research centre, SCK CEN, carries out most of its work on its site in Mol. The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre in Geel, which describes itself as 55 km east of Antwerp and 20 km south of the Dutch border, hosts about 230 staff.

That employer mix shapes the school decision. An EU-institution post can open the European School route; a contract with another employer may not. Ask your employer which admissions category it can document before you sign a lease.

Getting around: rail, bus and road

Mol station is on the railway between Antwerp and Hasselt, with direct trains to Antwerp; check the current timetable on the NMBS/SNCB journey planner. The JRC notes a public bus from Mol station to its Geel site.

European School Mol is in the Europawijk district. The school’s accessibility notes list daily school buses from Antwerp and Eindhoven. By car, it gives the E313 from Antwerp, the A67 from Eindhoven and the E314 from Brussels. From Brussels by public transport, the school’s own route is an intercity train to Mol and then bus 2 from the station; check whether your connection needs a change.

Our judgment: living in or near Mol keeps the day simple. Commuting a young child daily from Antwerp or Eindhoven is possible on the school buses, but test the real morning and afternoon times first.

Flemish local schools

Mol is in Flanders, so local schools teach in Dutch and follow Flemish Community rules. Compulsory education starts on 1 September of the year a child turns 5. Some Flemish towns run a central application round for school places; ask the municipality or the local consultation platform (LOP) listed on the Flemish government’s contact page whether one applies in Mol for your year.

Secondary pupils who have recently arrived and do not speak Dutch may be eligible for a reception year called OKAN. Ask a school nearby whether it offers it. Choose a local school if you will stay long term and want your child fluent in Dutch; look elsewhere if you expect another international move within a few years.

Where European School Mol fits

European School Mol teaches in Dutch, French and English sections and leads to the European Baccalaureate. It suits children of eligible EU-institution staff first, and other families only when places remain. Unlike the Brussels schools, it is outside the central Brussels allocation system. Read the European School admissions guide for how categories work, and the school profile for sections, fees and boarding contacts.
