Schools in Leuven: English primary or Dutch local education?

International School of Leuven and De Klare Bron both serve primary-age children in Heverlee. The important differences are teaching language, educational approach and funding—not simply the word international.

International School of Leuven (ISL) is a private English-medium school at Tervuursesteenweg 282. GO! leefschool De Klare Bron is a Dutch-medium public school at Jules Vandenbemptlaan 14. Both stop at the end of primary education, so an older child’s search must include the next secondary school.

Which language and approach fit?

ISL starts from age two and a half. Its primary programme combines UK English and mathematics with the International Primary Curriculum (IPC). IPC is not the IB Primary Years Programme. Dutch is taught too, but that does not make the school a Dutch-medium primary.

De Klare Bron belongs to GO!, the Flemish Community’s public education network. Its leefschool approach uses projects and pupil participation alongside the Flemish curriculum. Teaching is in Dutch. Ask how a new learner of Dutch is supported and how parents participate in the school’s projects.

English continuity may make ISL relevant to a family moving between English-medium systems. De Klare Bron is relevant to a family seeking Dutch-medium Flemish education. In either case, examine actual language support and the plan after Grade 6 or the sixth primary year.

Two different admissions processes

ISL handles applications directly; ask about the child’s year and intended start date. For De Klare Bron, use the Leuven primary admissions information. The main 2026–27 application and registration periods have ended. The city now directs families to schools with remaining places.

At De Klare Bron, confirm the Heverlee site. Its regulations are shared with De Grasmus at Grasmushof, but they are different locations. For 2027–28, wait for the new local calendar rather than reusing the March 2026 deadline.

What the fees mean

ISL’s published fee page lists €15,200 annually for a full day, plus a non-refundable €800 admission fee. Lunch, swimming and after-school care are among the extras. The current withdrawal rule refunds 25% of the school-year tuition for departure by 31 December 2026 and none after that date. This matters for a short or uncertain posting.

De Klare Bron’s 2026–27 regulations set no enrolment fee. They cap specified one-day activities at €55 per nursery year or €110 per primary year. The €560 limit for residential school trips covers the whole primary-school period, not every year. These caps are not an all-inclusive price for meals and childcare.

Plan beyond the first year

Check the journey to each Heverlee address, Wednesday afternoon arrangements and the latest collection time. Then ask where departing pupils continue secondary education and how the receiving school assesses their language and records. Neither primary school promises an automatic secondary place.

Use the Leuven overview and Belgium guide to widen the search. Compare a complete primary-to-secondary plan, rather than only the first available classroom.

Friendly orientation, not formal admissions advice. Always confirm dates with the school.
