Schools in Bertrange: the western suburb, its rail link and nearby options

Bertrange is the commune on Luxembourg City's western edge, next to Strassen and Mamer, with its own station on the Arlon line. Families look at it mainly for European School Luxembourg II, but it also works as a base for schools in the city.

Bertrange (Bartringen in German, Bartreng in Luxembourgish) borders Luxembourg City to the west, between Strassen and Mamer. It is a suburban commune of houses and apartments. Its location suits families who want to be close to the capital without living in it.

The town is on CFL line 50, the railway from Luxembourg City to Kleinbettingen and Arlon in Belgium. Bertrange-Strassen is the first stop out of the city. Mamer-Lycée and Mamer follow. Public transport in Luxembourg has been free since March 2020, apart from first class. Plan the exact door-to-door trip on mobiliteit.lu at school times.

How schooling works locally

Bertrange’s own schools are part of the national public system. There, Luxembourgish is the everyday language in the early years and German is the language of literacy in primary. French is added during primary, as the Ministry of Education’s overview explains. For young children in families who will stay, the local primary is a serious option.

Two kinds of European school also matter here, and their rules differ:

The school here

European School Luxembourg II is on rue Gaston Thorn, on the Bertrange–Mamer side of the commune. Some official material gives its location as Mamer.

It suits families who qualify for a Type I place and whose child’s language section is taught there. Its profile covers the sections, the campus and who can apply. The school allocates new pupils between the two Luxembourg campuses under shared rules, so moving to Bertrange does not by itself secure a place there.

Where families live

Families with a place at Luxembourg II often settle in Bertrange, Mamer, Strassen or the western districts of the city. Because the campus is allocated, not chosen, it is worth asking the school how the allocation could affect your child before you fix a home on the strength of the address.

Alternatives to compare

Choose Bertrange if a parent works in the city or on Kirchberg and you want a quieter base with a train link. Live elsewhere if your child’s place turns out to be on Kirchberg and the daily journey across the city would cost more than the suburb saves. The Luxembourg country guide covers the wider system.

Friendly orientation, not formal admissions advice. Always confirm dates with the school.
