Tyska Skolan, or Deutsche Schule Stockholm, is a German-curriculum day school on Östermalm. It is a useful choice for families seeking continuity with German education while living in Sweden, rather than an English-medium international programme. The main questions are the child’s readiness for German teaching, the intended qualification and whether municipal funding or guest-pupil fees apply.

The non-profit Deutscher Schulverein, also called Tyska skolföreningen, runs the school. It is recognised in Sweden as an international school under chapter 24 of the Education Act and ordinance 2015:801. Germany recognises it as an Exzellente Deutsche Auslandsschule, a quality designation for a German school abroad. Legal status.

German education with Swedish requirements

The school offers education from kindergarten and Swedish preschool class through the Abitur. Its G8 structure means an eight-year German secondary course following primary school. The Abitur is a German university-entry qualification, not an IB Diploma.

The school says successful leavers gain recognised German qualifications and Swedish university-entry eligibility. Discuss the subjects and results required for the child’s intended university studies; eligibility is not an admission guarantee.

German and Swedish specialist teachers deliver the curriculum. English begins in Klasse 4 as a subject, not as the school’s general teaching language. The school reports around 30 annual arrivals from schools in Germany or other German schools abroad. A newcomer should nevertheless confirm the German level expected in the relevant class and the Swedish support available.

Which site will your child use?

The main contact address is Karlavägen 25, 114 31 Stockholm. The primary-school page places preschool class and Klassen 1–3, together with after-school care, at Bragevägen 2. The two Klasse 4 classes are at Karlavägen. Kindergarten groups are also on Karlavägen.

The primary section has two classes per year in Klassen 1–4 and two Swedish-law preschool classes. Confirm the child’s teaching and care location before planning the commute. There is no boarding. Contact the school.

Application periods

The published windows use numbered calendar weeks:

  • Preschool class: week 40 of the preceding year through week 5 of the entry year.
  • Klasse 1: weeks 3–11 of the entry year.
  • Klassen 2–11: from Monday of week 11 through week 15. Applications before week 11 are not considered.

For Klassen 2–11, submit all three parts: personal details, the school agreement and a personbevis marked “studier,” a Swedish population-register extract for studies, no more than three months old. A family living abroad when applying may instead provide a birth-certificate copy. Email confirmation comes only after all three parts arrive. Application instructions.

The FAQ mentions a waiting list for preschool siblings but gives no length. Do not treat an application date as a place guarantee.

Guest pupils: a conditional temporary stay

There is no regular exchange programme. Guest admission depends on unused capacity, normally assessed around late April or early May for the following year.

For 2026/27, the minimum stay is one school half-year. The pupil’s German school must grant official leave. A parent must accompany the pupil, or an adult in Stockholm must be authorised to make decisions. Apply in weeks 11–15 through the same lateral-entry form.

Upper-secondary guests can enter only year 10 under the G8 structure. The school recommends August–December because central examinations fall in the second half of the year. Swedish and subjects taught in Swedish are compulsory but are not graded in the first year. Beginner Swedish may be available. These are conditions to arrange before travel, not an exchange package supplied by the school. Guest-pupil information.

Funding and the guest fee

The legal-status page says the home municipality pays skolpeng, municipal per-pupil funding, for a child with a Swedish personal number. Germany also supports the school under its legislation for German schools abroad. Confirm the child’s funding position with the school, together with any applicable care, meal, association or trip costs.

The published 2026/27 guest fee is SEK 55,000 per started school half-year. It is not an annual rate and should not be applied automatically to municipally funded pupils. Ask the school which category applies before budgeting; this profile does not establish a later-year guest rate or current after-school-care tariff.

Our view

Choose Tyska Skolan when a German qualification and continuity with German schooling serve the child’s plans. It is less suitable if the main objective is English-medium IB education or an organised exchange year.
