Kungsholmens gymnasium is a City of Stockholm upper-secondary day school for pupils who want Sweden’s national curriculum, including programmes taught in English. It is not an IB option for new applicants. The central question is whether the pupil wants a Swedish university-preparatory diploma and meets the Swedish-language and regional-registration requirements.

English teaching, Swedish programmes

The English programme list names three options:

  • Social Science Programme.
  • Natural Science Programme.
  • International Business Programme.

All follow the Swedish syllabus. The word “International” in International Business does not mean International Baccalaureate. Teaching language and qualification are separate choices.

The Swedish programme information also lists the Humanities Programme, focused on languages, and Stockholms musikgymnasium. The music provision combines choir and music with specially designed natural-science or social-science studies.

Swedish remains an admission requirement

The applying page requires registration in the Stockholm region and a passing Swedish grade from year 9. English-medium teaching does not remove that requirement.

For applicants from an IB school, the page identifies Swedish Language & Literature or Language Acquisition as possible evidence and refers to a minimum phase 4. Ask admissions to confirm how the requirement applies to the particular course and report you hold.

Pupils needing language introduction are directed to Start Stockholm. That is a separate route, not automatic entry to one of the English-medium programmes.

First-year applications and later transfers

First-year applications go through Gymnasieantagningen, the regional upper-secondary admissions service. Pupils outside the Swedish school system also apply there, using the information for applicants from other countries.

Until 31 August, Kungsholmen follows that service’s reserve list and contacts pupils by text message. After that date, it uses its own online form. As of September 2026, applicants seeking a late place should check the school’s form rather than rely on the earlier reserve procedure.

Transfers into year 2 or 3 also use a digital form. When a vacancy arises, the school considers grades and the study plan. It does not answer enquiries about an applicant’s position in the queue. A transfer therefore depends on both space and compatibility with the programme already studied.

There is no verified current admission-score threshold in this profile. Use Gymnasieantagningen’s figures for the specific programme and year; satisfying the basic requirements is not a place guarantee.

Qualification and practical budget

The programmes lead toward a Swedish university-preparatory gymnasieexamen, not an IB Diploma. Subject choices still matter for university eligibility. For study abroad, ask how the intended university assesses this diploma and the applicant’s individual subjects.

This is a municipal school, not a fee-paying international-school programme. The cited pages do not establish every ancillary cost or entitlement. Check any applicable trip costs and travel-card rules with the school instead of assuming that all daily expenses are covered.

Our view

For an IB qualification, compare ISSR, the municipal IB school, or fee-paying Stockholm International School. Those schools have different eligibility and cost conditions; they are not interchangeable admissions alternatives.
