ISSR is a City of Stockholm day school offering English-medium International Baccalaureate (IB) programmes. It is a strong option to investigate for a temporarily relocated family seeking municipal IB education. Access is more restricted in the younger years than in upper secondary, so start with your child’s grade and the family’s work contract.
The school has temporarily moved to Kärrtorp gymnasium, Karlsövägen 9, Johanneshov, for renovations from August 2026 through June 2028. Plan visits and the commute around this address, not the former Södermalm site. There is no boarding. School information.
Eligibility changes at Grade 10
The admissions page, updated 25 March 2026, distinguishes two groups:
- Grades 0–9, within the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and Middle Years Programme (MYP), are only for families with a temporary work contract.
- M10–DP2, the school’s Grades 10–12, are open to local and international applicants. Priority still goes to temporary work contracts.
PYP runs from PK/Grade 0 at age five to P5/Grade 5 at roughly 10–11. The school describes it as serving families staying in and around Stockholm for a short period. Ask admissions whether your particular contract meets the requirement.
Stockholm International School is a separate fee-paying IB option with its own international-connection criteria. Compare it if ISSR’s younger-year eligibility does not fit. For an older pupil wanting Sweden’s national programmes taught in English, consider Kungsholmens gymnasium; that is a different curriculum and admissions route.
Applications and timing
Apply through OpenApply. ISSR does not accept application documents by email and does not operate a waiting list.
PYP and MYP have ongoing intake through Grade 10. Diploma Programme (DP) intake closes in September, and pupils cannot start after September. This makes an October arrival particularly difficult for a family seeking DP1.
For the IB Career-related Programme (CP), applications run from October to January, with audition decisions from mid-February. Late applications are considered only for EU, EEA or Swiss citizens, and only when places remain.
For pupils entering Grade 10 from Swedish year 9, the school reports an admission-point range of 290–340 over the preceding three years. It is historical context, not a current cut-off or an offer guarantee.
There is also an English and mathematics test. Exemption requires A in both subjects in the Swedish year-9 autumn term, or, for IB MYP pupils, 7 in mathematics and 6 in English Language and Literature. Information for year-9 applicants.
Daily provision and costs
The year-9 information gives around 28 pupils in Grade 10 classes and 15–25 in DP subject classes. It describes free lunch with vegetarian and non-vegetarian options, a Chromebook, and an SL public-transport card for pupils living more than six kilometres from school.
The school reports around 640 pupils, 80 languages and 30 DP clubs connected with CAS: creativity, activity and service, an element of the Diploma Programme. Its statement that DP results are above the world average is a school claim, not a ranking of local alternatives.
ISSR says there are no school fees, with one explicit exception: members of diplomatic missions who are not EU, EEA or Swiss citizens must pay tuition for Grades 10–DP2. The amount is not published in the cited admissions information. If this applies, obtain a written quotation from admissions before accepting. Parent-teacher association membership also has no dues.
Programmes are not interchangeable qualifications
PYP and MYP describe earlier stages of IB education; they are not university-entry diplomas. DP and CP are distinct upper-secondary programmes. For a university-bound pupil, check the chosen programme, subjects and intended university’s requirements rather than assuming any IB programme gives the same access.
Our view
ISSR is especially worth considering when a temporary posting makes its younger-year eligibility appropriate and the family wants IB continuity. Older local applicants can also consider it, but must meet the relevant admissions requirements and plan around the September DP deadline.
