Schottengymnasium is a co-educational Catholic private secondary school at Freyung 6 in Vienna’s first district. The Benedictine Abbey of Our Lady of the Scots is its provider.

The school has Austrian public-law status, or Öffentlichkeitsrecht. This means its reports and qualifications have the same official validity as those from a state school. It remains a private school with tuition.

It is a German-medium day school. There is no boarding. Pupils follow the eight-year Austrian Gymnasium route and finish with the Austrian Matura, not the International Baccalaureate.

Curriculum and languages

The curriculum combines humanities, languages, sciences, mathematics, arts, technology, physical education and Catholic religious education.

German and English begin in Year 1. Latin begins in Year 3. From Year 5, pupils choose Ancient Greek, French or Russian. Italian and Spanish are available later as electives.

The school also lists compulsory Digital Basic Education, language visits, project weeks, science activities and pastoral provision. These are parts of the Austrian programme rather than separate international qualifications.

Teaching is in German. The public admissions pages do not describe a structured German-as-an-additional-language route for a new international pupil. A family considering later entry should confirm the required German level and recognition of previous studies before applying.

First-year admission

The school states that the maximum number of pre-registrations has already been reached for 2026–27 and 2027–28. It is accepting no more first-year applications for those cohorts and keeps no waiting lists.

The general process begins unusually early:

  1. A child can join the pre-registration process during Year 3 of primary school.
  2. The school usually holds an open day on a Friday in October or November.
  3. On the following Monday, parents request the form by email between 07:00 and 14:00.
  4. Emails sent before 07:00 are not considered. Later emails are accepted only until the list reaches its 180th entry.
  5. A meeting between the child, parents and school leadership follows in the next autumn.

The next open-day and email dates have not yet been published. Families seeking the next available cohort should monitor the admissions page rather than reuse an old Monday.

The school’s short information page asks for a very good primary report and willingness to support the educational aims of a Catholic school. It lists the child’s baptism certificate, birth certificate, citizenship evidence, registration certificate and latest primary report among the documents.

An application to a higher year is handled individually by the school. Availability, German, prior subjects and the sequence of languages can all affect whether a transfer is workable.

Fees for 2026–27

Tuition is €275 per month from September through June. Ten payments make €2,750 for the school year. The fee continues during a pupil’s period of study abroad.

The sibling scale is:

Child in the family Monthly tuition
First €275.
Second €265.
Third €206.
Fourth €137.50.

Parents must request the sibling scale in writing. For 2026–27, the published request deadline is 18 September 2026.

The fee page does not publish a general acceptance deposit, notice period or withdrawal formula. Ask which charges remain payable if a child declines, transfers or leaves during the school year.

After-school care and meals

The Schottenhort serves lower-school pupils from the end of lessons until 17:00, Monday to Friday. It includes lunch, supervised learning and activities.

For 2026–27, the published monthly charges are collected ten times:

  • Five days of care: €505, including lunch and afternoon snack.
  • Three days of care: the page states €350.

The listed components of the three-day price are €247, €53 and €46, which add to €346 rather than €350. Confirm which amount will appear on the invoice.

First registration for after-school care costs €150. The annual craft charge is €130, and the annual activity charge is €75.

A pupil who does not use the after-school programme can book lunch supervision for fixed weekdays. The monthly price is €78 for one day, €126 for two, €174 for three, €222 for four or €270 for five.

After-school and lunch bookings run for the full school year. The school does not refund these fixed charges for school-free days. Its fee page points families to possible municipal meal assistance.

Support and wellbeing

The school publishes pastoral, mental-health and counselling routes. One page describes free appointments for pupils and parents twice a month, with additional urgent conversations possible.

That page still shows appointment dates from 2024–25. Confirm who provides the service now and how quickly a pupil can be seen.

The public pages do not set out a complete learning-support or SEND offer. Families needing adjustments should disclose them early and obtain written confirmation of classroom support, assessment arrangements, capacity and cost.

Schottengymnasium is most relevant to a family seeking a German-medium Catholic Gymnasium and Austrian Matura in central Vienna. It is not an English-medium international school and cannot meet a boarding need. See the Vienna guide and Austria guide for the wider context.
