Lycée Français de Prague is a co-educational day school in Smíchov. It is directly managed by AEFE, the French public agency responsible for the overseas French-school network. All stages share the Drtinova campus.
The school teaches the French national curriculum from maternelle, starting at age three, to Terminale, the final secondary year. French year names count down through collège: 6ème, 5ème, 4ème and 3ème. Lycée then comprises Seconde, Première and Terminale.
Pupils can take the Diplôme national du brevet (DNB) at the end of 3ème. Upper-secondary pupils work towards the French general baccalauréat. British International Section pupils may instead complete its international form, the BFI. None of these routes is the International Baccalaureate Diploma.
The single site has two libraries, a gym, an outdoor sports area and climbing walls. It has no boarding or published guardianship service.
Three language routes need separating
The ordinary primary route is French-dominant, with Czech and English also taught. A separate French-English bilingual route offers equal time in both languages from CP, the first primary year, while retaining Czech. The school assigns a route after considering the child’s abilities and family language profile.
The British International Section (SIB) begins at CM1, broadly Czech Grade 4. It adds English language and literature, plus history and geography taught through English. At collège, the school describes six extra weekly hours: four for language and literature, and two for history-geography.
The SIB page lists possible entry at CM1, CM2, 6ème, 5ème, Seconde and Première. Existing SIB pupils still need approval from the teachers’ council. Other applicants also take an English assessment.
The same page says pupils cannot transfer into 4ème or 3ème from a non-international section. Terminale BFI is unavailable without Première BFI. However, the page retains dated rollout information from 2022–25, so obtain the current rule and timetable in writing.
The Czech integration route
The two-year Czech bilingual programme is different from the primary French-English route. It is designed for children from Czech-speaking homes with no prior French. The aim is full entry into mainstream French classes in the third year.
- CI bilingue, corresponding to Czech Grade 5: ten hours of French each week in small groups. Czech language, literature and Czech social-subject teaching remain in Czech. A three-day integration stay is part of the year.
- 6ème bilingue, corresponding to Czech Grade 6: eight hours of French each week. Other subjects use adapted French, apart from Czech language and Czech history.
- 5ème, corresponding to Czech Grade 7: successful pupils join mainstream French classes. Teaching is then in French, with continued French-language support and a one-week integration stay.
The school describes approximately 15 admissions each year. Its selection consists of a 90-minute Czech test and a 30-minute mathematics test. These are school assessments, not Czech Cermat examinations.
The programme page invites children currently in Czech Grade 4, preferably, and Grade 5. The binding financial rules use narrower wording: entry is only at CI/fifth level, through written Czech tests, and only for pupils never previously enrolled at LFP.
Those two statements do not explain whether a current fifth-grader must repeat the equivalent grade or can enter 6ème. Ask for the proposed French and Czech year placement before paying the registration fee.
During Czech compulsory education, these pupils remain registered at a Czech local school. That school issues Czech reports using LFP results through Grade 9. The arrangement avoids an additional Czech comparative examination, but families should confirm the required paperwork with both schools.
Applying in September 2026
LFP published its 2026/27 registration notice on 2 February 2026. The public application page is a contact form, not a complete application timetable or document list.
The 2026/27 school year began on 2 September 2026. The registration notice therefore does not prove that a place remains in a requested grade. State whether you need an immediate transfer and ask the admissions office to confirm capacity before incurring costs.
No 2027/28 application calendar was published by 4 September 2026. Families planning ahead should register interest through the same form, without treating the 2026 dates as next year’s schedule.
General-route applicants should ask how prior reports, French level and year placement will be assessed. Czech bilingual and SIB applicants have the additional tests and approval rules described above.
Tuition and initial registration
The school’s 2026/27 financial regulations form part of the enrolment or re-enrolment agreement. They publish these annual fees:
| Programme or stage |
Annual tuition |
| Maternelle |
CZK 185,400 |
| Ordinary elementary |
CZK 200,200 |
| Collège, including CI and 6ème Czech bilingual |
CZK 258,500 |
| Ordinary lycée |
CZK 282,500 |
| International Section, CM1–CM2 |
CZK 211,600 |
| International Section, collège |
CZK 273,300 |
| International Section, lycée |
CZK 298,600 |
The lower bilingual rates are protected legacy prices, not a current applicant offer. They apply only to former Czech bilingual pupils enrolled at LFP before 2025/26. Those rates are CZK 160,400 for Czech Grades 7–9 and CZK 179,700 for Grades 10–12.
New pupils also pay CZK 30,100 when registration is requested. This fee is non-refundable unless LFP refuses registration because it has no capacity. It is charged again after an absence exceeding three consecutive school terms. The rules publish no separate security deposit.
A 5% sibling discount applies to the second and subsequent younger children while at least two siblings from the same household attend. It does not reduce the eldest child’s tuition.
The 2026/27 bursary notice concerns French-national pupils from lower-income families. Awards may cover some or all tuition, subject to income, assets and the programme budget. No 2027/28 application round was published by the research date.
Extras, payment and leaving
Meals, sports and cultural clubs, trips and some out-of-hours projects cost extra. Families also pay for CNED distance courses when a requested subject is not taught at LFP.
Any month begun is charged in full. A departure during the year requires written notice to both the secretariat and billing office at least one week before attendance ends. Without that notice, tuition continues to accrue.
Support and safeguarding questions
LFP includes ordinary pedagogical support in tuition, but it does not publish specialist staffing, therapy provision or admissions limits for additional needs. A July 2026 notice shows how one individual-assistant arrangement worked: the family recruited and paid the assistant directly, and LFP signed a convention.
That example is not a general entitlement. Before applying, share professional reports and ask for a written plan covering classroom adjustments, French-language support, assistant recruitment, costs and review points. Also request an accessibility visit if mobility or sensory access matters.
Residence and daily care
LFP does not advertise boarding, local guardianship or an immigration service. A place at the school is not, by itself, permission to reside in Czechia.
The Czech Ministry of the Interior explains that third-country nationals need an appropriate residence basis. The correct route depends on the child’s nationality, family status and purpose of stay. Confirm the family’s route with the official immigration authority, not from a school-place assumption.
If a child will live without a parent, ask LFP whether it will accept that care arrangement before applying. Families must arrange local supervision, emergency authority, housing and transport themselves.
Our take
LFP is a strong option for a family deliberately choosing the French system through the baccalauréat. Its Czech integration programme is unusually substantial, but the placement ambiguity for current fifth-graders must be resolved before payment.
It is a weaker match for a family wanting an IB Diploma, an English-only education or residential care. Families needing extensive support should proceed only after LFP confirms a workable, costed plan in writing.
See the Prague guide and Czech Republic guide for other local options and the national rules.
