International School Innsbruck (ISI) is a bilingual stream within Akademisches Gymnasium Innsbruck, a public Austrian day school. It is based at Angerzellgasse 14, 6020 Innsbruck.
ISI begins in the fifth year of schooling, usually at about age ten. It follows the Austrian Gymnasium curriculum through the Matura, Austria’s academic school-leaving qualification.
In the final two school years, pupils follow the Austrian programme and may also pursue the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma, an international school-leaving qualification. The Matura remains compulsory; the IB Diploma is an additional option rather than a replacement.
The official website is agibk.at. The central office is available on +43 50902 801 0 or at agi@tsn.at.
Language and curriculum
German and English are both used for teaching. The school identifies mathematics, geography and economics, biology, and environmental science among the subjects taught bilingually.
The international class is intended for primary-school graduates with strong language aptitude. The school also says it can support pupils who have not studied English before.
Compare ISI with WRG Ursulinen Innsbruck if you are also considering a private German-medium school leading to the Matura. The useful distinctions are the teaching languages, the optional IB Diploma at ISI and the costs of each school.
Residence and day-school limits
ISI is a day school and does not provide boarding. Its admissions policy requires international pupils to live with their parent or parents in the area around Innsbruck.
The school does not admit international pupils who live with relatives, family friends or in student residences. Families planning a relocation should resolve housing and parental residence before treating an application as workable.
Admissions
For first-year entry in 2026/27, families had to register in person between 16 and 27 February 2026. That application window is closed.
The published document list included:
- the report from the third year of primary school
- the semester report from the fourth year of primary school
- proof of residence from the Austrian registration system (ZMR)
- the completed application form
The school gives preference to returning pupils and siblings of current pupils. Later year groups use separate forms available from the downloads page.
Registration for first-language lessons other than German was open until 10 July 2026, with late registration possible at the start of school. Those dates relate to 2026/27 and do not establish a future admissions timetable.
Contact the office directly about a later-year or mid-year place. The reviewed pages did not publish another first-year window.
Fees and additional costs
ISI is part of a public state school. The admissions and school pages reviewed for this guide do not publish a pupil tuition fee.
That absence is not a promise that every activity is free. Ask for current written details of any association contribution, trips, language visits and IB examination costs.
The downloads page said registration for afternoon care in 2025/26 was closed. It did not establish availability or charges for 2026/27, so request current arrangements from the school.
Our view
ISI is a strong fit for a family living in Innsbruck that wants bilingual German-English teaching within the Austrian state system. It offers a clear Matura route with an optional IB Diploma in the final years.
It will not work for a child who needs boarding or cannot live with a parent near Innsbruck. Families needing a private German-medium route should compare WRG Ursulinen Innsbruck.
