Bilingual public school or German private school?
International School Innsbruck, or ISI, is a bilingual strand within the public Akademisches Gymnasium Innsbruck at Angerzellgasse 14. Its curriculum remains Austrian. The Matura is the national school-leaving qualification, while the IB Diploma is an additional option in the final two years.
The Gymnasium Ursulinen, at Fürstenweg 86, is a Catholic private school taught in German. Its Wirtschaftskundliches Realgymnasium, or WRG, is an academic secondary route with emphasis on economics and practical subjects. It leads to the Matura; it is not a vocational certificate and does not offer the IB.
ISI is the stronger comparison for a child who needs English support and may later benefit from the IB. Ursulinen is more appropriate when the child can study in German and the family prefers its curriculum and ethos. Ask both schools how prior reports map to the Austrian year group.
ISI is not a boarding route
ISI’s admissions policy requires the pupil to live with a parent or parents in Innsbruck or the nearby region. It does not admit an international pupil who will live with relatives, family friends or in a student residence. Establish the housing arrangement before pursuing the application.
The IB Diploma requires two years of study, not one. A pupil applying late in upper secondary should ask whether subject choices and prior preparation make entry possible. At earlier stages, ask how much teaching is in English and German in the proposed class, and what German support is available.
Use the correct application year
ISI’s published first-year registration for 2026–27 ran from 16 to 27 February 2026 and is closed. The general admissions page also provides forms for other years. An international application begins online, but a vacancy, records and placement still determine whether the child can enter.
Ursulinen has already published key dates for 2027–28. Its admissions page lists an open day on 28 November 2026. First-year registration runs from 15 to 19 February 2027, and the timing within that week is not a ranking criterion. Registration for the upper WRG begins on 15 February and lasts two weeks.
The Ursulinen page recommends naming second and third choices. Follow that advice for the wider Innsbruck search: an application is not a place until the school issues one.
Fees and other costs
ISI is a public school and does not have private-school tuition. Ask about devices, trips, care and IB examination costs for the relevant year.
Ursulinen’s current page gives annual tuition of €1,790 in ten instalments of €179, but labels that figure “as at September 2025.” It also makes clear that admission creates a private contract with the school operator. Request the contract and verify the rate that will apply in 2027–28 before budgeting.
Test Angerzellgasse and Fürstenweg from the actual home address, including the end of after-school activities. For a teenager, check subject continuity and the intended leaving qualification before judging the commute.
