Gymnázium Říčany is a public, Czech-medium academic secondary school maintained by the Central Bohemian Region. It is at Komenského náměstí 1280/1, Říčany and prepares pupils for the Czech maturita, the secondary school-leaving examination.
This is a day-school option. The reviewed school pages do not offer boarding. It is a separate institution from Open Gate in Babice and Masarykovo klasické gymnázium Říčany.
Who it suits
Consider GyRi if your child wants an academic education in Czech and your family can manage the daily journey to Říčany. It is not presented as an English-medium or International Baccalaureate school.
The school offers two courses:
- Four-year gymnázium, programme code 79-41-K/41.
- Eight-year gymnázium, programme code 79-41-K/81.
The courses have separate admissions criteria and results. Ask which route matches the child’s completed schooling, particularly when transferring from another country.
For a pupil still learning Czech, establish language readiness and available support before planning an application. The reviewed admissions page does not promise a beginner-Czech route.
Admissions: distinguish the completed cycle from the next one
The admissions page publishes criteria and results for 2026–27. It refers applicants to the national common entrance examination administered by CERMAT, alongside the school’s own selection criteria.
For that cycle, the school announced two four-year classes and one eight-year class. Its February notice said previous school-report grades would not count, while competitions, academic olympiads and language certificates could earn points.
Those are historical arrangements, not confirmed rules for the next intake. The page’s remaining statement about publishing criteria by 31 January 2026 is also about that completed cycle.
The school year began on 1 September 2026. Published results do not establish whether a late place or transfer is possible. Ask the secretariat about the intended year group, any vacancy and the applicable assessment.
For the next normal intake, use the newly published criteria when available. Confirm deadlines, required documents and the treatment of previous overseas schooling rather than carrying the 2026 rules forward.
Costs and the voluntary parents’ association
The school is publicly maintained, rather than a private fee-paying gymnázium. The reviewed pages do not provide a complete annual family budget. Ask separately about meals, trips, materials and optional activities.
The parents’ association, SRPŠ, is voluntary. It lists a membership contribution of CZK 1,000 per pupil, with one payment permitted for siblings. This is an association contribution, not an admission fee.
Use the association’s own current payment instructions if joining. Its published example of a school-year payment reference should not be mistaken for the current academic year.
The canteen is operated by J+J školní jídelny. Meals are served from 11:30 to 15:00, and payment is by bank transfer. Orders, cancellations and changes for the following day must be submitted by 14:00.
The reviewed canteen page does not give a lunch price. Obtain the current tariff before calculating annual meal costs.
School life and practical arrangements
The school describes an ongoing relationship with Charles University’s Faculty of Science and says its partner-school designation runs through 2030. This is useful context for families interested in science, not a guarantee of university admission.
For 2026–27, the school directs pupils to the timetable in Bakaláři, its school information system. The 08:15 opening on the first day was a specific event, not evidence that every school day starts at that time.
Check the child’s actual start and finish times before testing the commute. Ask which clubs run this year and whether they carry additional charges.
The contact page lists a school psychologist and careers adviser. Their presence does not establish the support available for a particular learning need; discuss that need directly.
Published office hours are Monday and Wednesday, 08:30–11:00 and 13:30–15:00. Holiday arrangements are announced separately.
Our take
GyRi is worth considering for a Czech-medium academic education close to home. The important decisions are the appropriate course, readiness to study in Czech and the realistic admissions route.
If boarding is essential, compare Open Gate separately. Do not assume the schools share a curriculum, application process or fee structure simply because they are nearby.
