The American School of Warsaw, or ASW, is a private, not-for-profit day school in Bielawa, within Konstancin-Jeziorna. It teaches in English from Pre-K3 through Grade 12.
The campus is south of central Warsaw, not in the city centre. Test the journey from the family’s intended home at school-run time. A short route on Sunday can be a very different weekday commitment.
ASW is strongest for a pupil who wants English-medium education and an IB continuum in one school. It is a weaker fit when boarding, guaranteed extensive specialist support, or a Polish school-leaving route is essential.
Programme and qualifications
ASW is authorised for three International Baccalaureate (IB) programmes. The IB directory records PYP, MYP and DP authorisation and identifies ASW as an English-medium, co-educational day school.
- Pre-K3–Grade 5: IB Primary Years Programme (PYP).
- Grades 6–10: IB Middle Years Programme (MYP).
- Grades 11–12: IB Diploma Programme (DP) courses and ASW diploma requirements.
PYP and MYP are curriculum frameworks, not school-leaving qualifications. At the end of Grade 12, the school distinguishes three outcomes.
The ASW High School Academic Diploma requires at least 23 credits and ASW’s creativity, activity and service requirement. ASW accepts no more than 18 transferred credits from accredited schools.
The full IB Diploma is an optional external qualification. A pupil completes six DP subjects alongside the ASW Academic Diploma requirements. The IB core adds Theory of Knowledge, a research essay and Creativity, Activity and Service.
The ASW High School General Diploma is for identified learning needs. It also requires at least 23 credits and service, but may include curriculum modifications, accommodations and an aide. A pupil may take individual DP courses.
These outcomes are not interchangeable. For Polish higher education, the IB Diploma is recognised, while each university sets its admission criteria. Ask the target institution how it treats an ASW diploma or individual DP course results.
High School pupils must complete their programme before turning 21. A late entrant should obtain a written credit audit and a realistic qualification plan before accepting a place.
Languages
English is the teaching language, except in language courses. The current High School page says English as an Additional Language (EAL) support continues through Grade 10.
The current support page says ASW welcomes beginning English learners only through Grade 9. Later entrants therefore need a stronger starting level, even though some Grade 10 pupils continue receiving EAL.
The support page also describes EAL assistance through graduation, which is broader than the High School page’s Grade 10 limit. An applicant for Grades 11–12 should obtain a written description of the help available.
The fee schedule makes EAL compulsory for every new Grade 1–12 pupil who qualifies under the school’s assessment and policy. The one-time charge is 19,500 PLN. A current ASW Kindergarten pupil continuing into Grade 1 does not pay it.
The live admissions pages do not agree on who takes the WIDA English-proficiency assessment in High School. The Join page says applicants entering Grade 9 in the second semester through Grade 12 may be assessed. The FAQ describes the test as compulsory for a broader group.
ASW’s dated language policy prints WIDA minimums of 3.5 for late Grade 9 or early Grade 10 and 4.8 for later Grade 10–12. Because that policy dates from May 2022, request the current threshold for the pupil’s exact entry point.
Elementary pupils can study Polish or French. Some home-language tutoring can take place in the timetable, but the family organises and pays the tutor. Subject availability and timetabling should be confirmed for the entry year.
Learning support and access
ASW reviews reports and available staffing before admission. Its current support page describes mild-to-moderate provision, while the fee schedule also prices intense and specialised support. A priced category is not a guarantee that the school can offer it in every grade.
The May 2022 support policy describes learning plans, accommodations, speech-language support and an educational psychologist. It also says ASW may decline admission when needs exceed its programme or available places.
The current support page limits its speech-language pathologist provision to Elementary. Older pupils needing this service should confirm whether an external provider is necessary and who pays.
That dated policy says specialised education was available in Elementary and Grades 6–8, but not High School. It also excluded occupational therapy, sensory integration, physical therapy and neuropsychological assessment. Confirm every required service against a proposed written plan.
The same policy describes ramps at entrances, one lift per division, some automatic doors, wheelchair-accessible toilets and a lift to the pool changing-room entrance. Treat this as a 2022 description, not an accessibility guarantee.
A family needing physical access should test the pupil’s full route. Include classrooms, toilets, changing areas, emergency evacuation, transport and any after-school activity.
Admissions for 2027
Applications open on 1 September, one year before entry. The school accepts applications throughout the year, but says most August places are allocated by April.
For an August 2027 start, the school’s recurring decision schedule maps as follows:
- complete by 15 January 2027 for a decision by 15 March;
- complete by 15 February for a decision by 15 April;
- complete by 15 April for a decision by 15 June;
- complete after 15 April for rolling review.
For a January 2027 start, the same schedule gives 30 October 2026 as the completion date for a decision by 15 November. Later files are reviewed on a rolling basis. Confirm all dates because the page presents them as a recurring calendar.
The application fee is 150 USD or 600 PLN. It is non-refundable, does not guarantee a place and must be paid before processing. An active waitlisted applicant with a previously paid application is not charged again.
Required school records depend on grade:
- Pre-K3–Grade 1: the most recent report or school letter;
- Grades 2–5: last year’s and current reports;
- Grades 6–12: reports from the previous two years and the current year;
- High School: an official transcript;
- a DP transfer into Grade 11 semester two or Grade 12: the IB DP transfer form.
Families also submit parent and child identity documents, a birth certificate and teacher questionnaires. Reports must include certified English translations alongside the originals and must be officially signed or stamped.
Pre-K–Grade 5 requires one questionnaire from a homeroom teacher. Grades 6–12 require three, from mathematics, English, and a counsellor or principal.
Disclose educational, psychological, medical and support reports at the start. Missing information can undermine both the admissions decision and the support plan.
The review is holistic and may include testing. Admission depends on class places, nationality balance, English provision and learning-support capacity. A waitlist remains active for the stated semester or school year.
The policy linked from the current application page aims to keep every nationality, except US passport holders, below 20% in each grade. It also gives priority to continuing pupils and named diplomatic, corporate, US-national, sibling, returning and alumni groups.
Within a priority group, completion and payment timing matter. A family outside the priority categories should not read an early application as a guaranteed early offer.
An offer arrives through OpenApply. The family must sign the enrolment agreement, pay the required registration fee or deposit, and return the physical-examination form by the stated deadline.
Grade placement
The school applies strict age placement from Pre-K3 through Grade 1. For 2027/28, the published starting bands are:
- Pre-K3: born 1 October 2023–30 September 2024;
- Pre-K4: born 1 October 2022–30 September 2023;
- Kindergarten: born 1 October 2021–30 September 2022;
- Grade 1: born 1 October 2020–30 September 2021.
For Grades 2–12, ASW considers age, development and previous schooling. The pupil normally must have completed the equivalent prior grade. Otherwise, ASW may require a repeat year.
Tuition and compulsory charges, 2026/27
Tuition is billed in both USD and PLN. Paying only the converted total in one currency does not satisfy the published terms.

| Pre-Kindergarten |
6,864 USD + 40,188 PLN |
| Kindergarten |
8,434 USD + 52,524 PLN |

| Grade 11 |
12,904 USD + 83,316 PLN |
| Grade 12 |
12,904 USD + 83,968 PLN |
Tuition includes textbooks, ordinary classroom supplies, field trips, most after-school activities, IB examination fees and mild learning support. Lunch and bus transport are excluded.
A newly admitted Pre-K pupil pays a non-refundable 12,000 PLN seat deposit, credited against tuition. A new Kindergarten–Grade 12 pupil pays a one-time, non-refundable 8,000 USD registration fee.
The registration fee also applies when a current Pre-K pupil continues into Kindergarten. The schedule says returning pupils who previously paid the Grades 1–12 registration fee do not pay it again.
Pupils entering during a semester are charged the full semester. The only published exception covers entry within the final 15 school days of semester one, when ASW applies a daily pro-rata charge.
Support and other costs
Annual learning-support charges are:
- mild: included in tuition;
- moderate: 13,000 PLN;
- intense: 45,000 PLN;
- specialised education: 125,000 PLN.
The school should identify the category, services and individual plan before the family signs. Ask whether the charge can change after review and whether any unused support fee is refundable.
Other published charges include 700 PLN per late invoice and 2,000 PLN for four instalments or a special payment plan. Families pay full replacement cost for lost or damaged property, refunded if a lost item returns in good condition.
Possible additional charges include SAT tests, independent study, laptop insurance, PE uniform and some activities. More than three exit-document packets and some sports or activity-trip travel can also be billed.
ASW publishes no current bus or meal tariff. The family contracts directly with the third-party bus operator, and meals are ordered separately from the food provider.
The Corporate Partnership Programme is an eight-year employer contract. The fee schedule mentions higher admissions priority and waived registration fees, but its full price and conditions are not public.
Payment, re-enrolment and withdrawal
A withdrawal is valid only after an email to Admissions and completion of the school’s withdrawal form. The published tuition refund table is:
| Notice received |

Refunds exclude every fee or deposit identified as non-refundable. If tuition was not fully paid by its due date, the entire invoiced amount remains payable despite withdrawal. This is the contract point to understand before accepting.
Campus, transport and residence
The 10-hectare campus includes a library, arts and design spaces, a theatre, gyms, fields, a 400-metre track and a 25-metre pool. Facilities do not remove the commute question from Warsaw or another municipality.
The third-party bus service offers door-to-door routes for Pre-K–Grade 12, subject to routing and contract. Ask for the proposed stop, journey time, supervision arrangement and current price before relying on it.
ASW is a day school and provides no boarding. An offer also does not give a pupil or parent permission to reside in Poland.
For a non-EU family, the correct residence route depends on the child’s and parents’ circumstances. Poland has a temporary-residence route for school education, but it requires evidence and does not replace a family-specific immigration assessment.
If a pupil will not live with a parent, ask ASW and the relevant authority for written confirmation of guardianship, address and safeguarding requirements. Do not infer that a day-school place includes a host arrangement.
