Junglinster (Jonglënster in Luxembourgish) is a commune north-east of Luxembourg City. Alongside the town itself it takes in villages such as Bourglinster, Gonderange and Godbrange. It appeals to families who want more space than the capital offers while staying within reach of Kirchberg, where many EU-institution and finance jobs are.
Junglinster is not on the railway. Regional RGTR buses link it with Kirchberg and the city centre, and the routes and stops were reorganised around the Kirchberg tram works in 2025. Public transport in Luxembourg is free, apart from first class on trains. Check the current route from a specific address on mobiliteit.lu at school and office times before you sign a lease.
How schooling works locally
Children who live in the commune normally start in the national public system. Luxembourgish is the everyday language of the early years and German is the language of literacy in primary. French is added in primary and grows in secondary; the Ministry of Education sets out the sequence.
That suits young children in families who are staying. It is much harder for an older child arriving with English only.
The alternative is one of Luxembourg’s free public European schools. They teach the European Schools curriculum in English, French or German sections up to the European Baccalaureate. Junglinster’s lycée is one of them.
The school here
Lënster Lycée International School (LLIS) is a public school in Junglinster. It runs both European classes and Luxembourg national classes on the same campus, and the two have different programmes and application routes.
It suits a family living in or near the commune whose child can learn mainly in English, French or German. The profile covers its sections, admissions timing and the school’s own catchment priority. Read it before you apply.
Where families live
Because the school gives priority to its local catchment, living in the commune matters more here than at a city school. Ask the school how it defines the catchment before you choose a village.
Families whose working life is in Kirchberg often weigh Junglinster against communes closer in. A shorter bus ride to work can matter more than a few extra square metres.
Alternatives to compare
Choose Junglinster if you want a suburban base east of the city and LLIS has a place in the right section. Look closer to Kirchberg if a long bus commute would fall on a parent every day. The Luxembourg country guide explains the wider system.
