Schools in Esch-sur-Alzette: Luxembourg's second city, Belval and nearby options

Esch-sur-Alzette is Luxembourg's second city, with the Belval district and the University of Luxembourg's main campus on its edge. It has two stations on the line to the capital and a site of the free public European school EIDE in the town centre.

Esch-sur-Alzette (Esch-Uelzecht in Luxembourgish) is the country’s second city and the centre of the industrial south, on the border with France. Belval, on the former steelworks site at its western edge, is home to the University of Luxembourg’s Belval campus along with research institutes and new housing. Many families arrive in Esch because a parent works or studies there.

Esch-sur-Alzette and Belval-Université are both stations on CFL line 60, between Luxembourg City and Differdange. Public transport is free, apart from first class. Before you choose between the town centre and Belval, test both the school run and the work commute on mobiliteit.lu.

How schooling works locally

Esch’s communal schools follow the national system. Luxembourgish is the everyday language in the early years and German is the language of literacy in primary. French is added during primary and grows in secondary, as the Ministry of Education explains. For a young child in a family planning to stay, that is a realistic route. For an older child with only English, it is not.

Luxembourg’s free public European schools offer the alternative. They are open to all, with no employer categories, and teach in English, French or German sections up to the European Baccalaureate.

The school here

The public European school for the south is École Internationale Differdange et Esch-sur-Alzette (EIDE). Its Esch site is on rue Victor Hugo in the town centre. The main sites are in Differdange, further west on the same railway.

Which years and sections are taught in Esch changes from year to year. A child may start here and move to Differdange later. Use the profile for sections, sites and admissions, and the Differdange guide for life at the other end of the line.

Where families live

Families choose between three bases:

  • The town centre, which is walkable to the rue Victor Hugo site and Esch station.
  • Belval, newer and close to the university and its station.
  • Neighbouring communes such as Schifflange or Sanem.

If your child is likely to move to Differdange for later years, a home near line 60 keeps both sites reachable.

Alternatives to compare

Choose Esch if a parent’s work or study is in the south, especially at Belval, and you can accept that the child’s site may change. Look nearer the capital if both parents commute to Kirchberg. The Luxembourg country guide explains the wider system.
