Schools in Differdange: a south-western town, its rail line and nearby options

Differdange is a former mining and steel town in Luxembourg's far south-west, on the railway through Belval and Esch to the capital. The free public European school EIDE has its main sites here.

Differdange (Déifferdeng in Luxembourgish) is one of the larger towns of the Minett, the former iron-ore and steel region along Luxembourg’s southern border with France. It lies at the south-western end of the country, close to Pétange and the Belgian and French borders. Families usually look here because a parent works in the south or because they want more space than the capital offers.

The town is on CFL line 60, which runs from Pétange and Rodange through Differdange, Belval and Esch-sur-Alzette to Luxembourg City. Public transport in Luxembourg is free, apart from first class. Check the full trip, including any change, on mobiliteit.lu. The train is a real option for a parent working in the city, but the journey is longer than from the suburbs.

How schooling works locally

Differdange’s communal schools follow the national system. Luxembourgish is the everyday language of the early years and German is the language of literacy in primary. French is added during primary, as the Ministry of Education sets out. An older child arriving with English only will find the national route steep.

Luxembourg’s free public European schools are the alternative. They are open to all, with no employer categories, and teach in English, French or German sections up to the European Baccalaureate.

The school here

École Internationale Differdange et Esch-sur-Alzette (EIDE) is the public European school for the south. Its nursery, primary and secondary sites are in Differdange, it has a further site in Esch-sur-Alzette, and it runs integration classes in Schifflange.

Year groups and sections are split between these sites, so a child’s campus can change between stages. EIDE suits a family settled in the south that wants a European curriculum without fees. The profile covers sections, sites and admissions.

Where families live

A family choosing Differdange for EIDE can live in the town or in neighbouring Niederkorn, Oberkorn or Pétange. If both parents work in the south, the commute is short.

If one parent works on Kirchberg, add the train time to a station near the office. Then compare that with living nearer Belval and using the Esch-sur-Alzette site.

Alternatives to compare

Choose Differdange if the family’s life is in the south and the child’s section is taught on a Differdange site. Look nearer the city if a daily commute to Kirchberg would dominate the week. The Luxembourg country guide explains the wider system.
