Utrechts Stedelijk Gymnasium (USG) is a public Dutch-language gymnasium at Ina Boudier Bakkerlaan 7, 3582 VA Utrecht. A categoraal gymnasium offers only the gymnasium route: Dutch pre-university education, or vwo, with classical languages alongside the usual subjects.
Choose it for that academic and linguistic combination after groep 8, the final Dutch primary-school year. It is not an English-medium IB school. Although USG and International School Utrecht secondary share the NUOVO governing organisation, their curricula and admissions routes differ. USG is a day school, with no boarding advertised.
Educational character
The school’s account of its education emphasises classical, intellectual, personal and civic development. Latin and Greek sit alongside the standard vwo subjects. Around 25 pupil associations and the Homerus enrichment programme broaden the offer beyond examinations.
Homerus includes Global Studies, U-Talent and language certificates such as DELF for French, Goethe for German, Spanish certification and Cambridge English. These are supplementary opportunities, not an IB Diploma.
Admissions and the published dates
A vwo recommendation from primary school is required to apply. According to the admissions page, the groep-8 teacher registers the pupil digitally; there is no separate USG form.
The page gives 8–31 March 2027 as the application window and 19 April as the placement date in that sequence. This follows the Utrecht POVO procedure, the transition from primary to secondary education, explained at Samen naar het VO.
The same researched page still labels a maximum of 196 places as applying to 2026/27. That does not establish the capacity for the March 2027 intake. Ask the school to confirm the year and capacity relevant to the application.
There is no distinction between city and regional applicants, and NUOVO no longer operates a sibling-priority rule. Families needing additional support should contact the school before 1 March 2027, using the support contact on the admissions page. Ask what provision can be agreed for the child before applying.
The Junioracademie is a separate programme for groep-8 pupils. Taking part is not the same as applying for a secondary-school place and does not replace the admissions procedure.
Published voluntary contributions
The government pays most school costs, including staff, upkeep, energy and textbooks. The school-costs page publishes the following parent contributions, without identifying them as 2026/27 rates. Confirm the applicable year.

| General voluntary contribution: excursions, museums, theatre, mentor days and Homerus |

| Gregoriusfonds |

The school says the trips form part of the required programme and a pupil still participates if the family cannot pay the contribution. Invoices use WIS Collect. Families can discuss help with the school administration or rector; the page also identifies Stichting Leergeld and the Willebrordusfonds as sources of assistance.
These contributions are not comparable to a private international school’s tuition fee. Nor should the separate items be added into one uniform annual charge: several apply only in particular years.
Our view
Choose USG when the child has a vwo recommendation, can study in Dutch and wants classical languages as part of a pre-university education. Compare ISUtrecht when English-medium IB continuity is the priority and the child meets that school’s eligibility requirements.
The Utrecht guide and Netherlands guide provide further context.
