International School Utrecht is an English IB school for internationally mobile pupils. Utrechts Stedelijk Gymnasium is a Dutch public vwo school with Latin and Greek.
These schools use different admissions systems and serve different pupils.
International School Utrecht, at Van Deventerlaan 1, is part of the Dutch International Schools system. It offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) continuum in English from kindergarten through the Diploma. Subsidised fees do not make it open to every resident: the eligibility page is aimed at internationally mobile pupils living in the Netherlands temporarily. Dutch nationals normally need at least two years of schooling abroad. Confirm eligibility before paying or planning a move.
Utrechts Stedelijk Gymnasium, at Ina Boudier Bakkerlaan 7, is a public Dutch categoraal gymnasium. That means it offers only the most academic vwo route, including Latin and Greek, and leads to the Dutch vwo diploma. It is not an IB school and the teaching week is Dutch. Entry from primary school requires the appropriate vwo recommendation and follows Utrecht’s regional application system.
ISU uses fixed start dates rather than allowing arrival on any school day. Ask which remaining date applies and whether the child can enter that grade with their present English. From Grade 9, the school expects enough English to access the curriculum.
The school’s current fees sit in its 2026–27 Standard Terms and Conditions. Open that official document and use the correct primary or secondary school charge.
USG’s page listed an 8–31 March 2027 application period. Its published voluntary parent contribution was not labelled with a school year. Ask whether that amount remains current and what trips or optional activities cost. A voluntary contribution is not private-school tuition.
Test both journeys from your proposed home. ISU has announced a future campus on Cambridgelaan before 2027–28; confirm the opening and which grades will move before relying on that address. Use Van Deventerlaan for the current placement.
Also compare the ordinary Dutch schools available through the municipality. For a family staying long term, Dutch vwo can make local integration and university access more direct. For a mobile family that meets the statutory test, IB continuity may be more useful.
