Svenska samskolan i Tammerfors (SST) is a private Swedish-language day school at Koulukatu 14, 33200 Tampere, in Kaakinmaa. It offers preschool, basic education in years 1–9, and gymnasium, the Swedish name for general upper secondary education. Its upper secondary years are labelled IG–IIIG, meaning years 1–3, and lead to the Finnish matriculation examination, studentexamen.
Swedish is the principal teaching language. Finnish and English are language subjects; their presence does not make SST an English-medium school. The reviewed pages do not advertise boarding.
For admissions and visits, use the school office contacts. The contact page names Ronny Holmqvist as rector and Rikard Bjurström as chair of the maintaining association.
Language, continuity and fit
SST is a strong option for a family wanting Swedish-medium education in Tampere through upper secondary. Ask what Swedish proficiency the child needs at the proposed entry point and what support is available. The decision should follow the child’s ability to learn in Swedish, not assumptions about a family’s language background.
The local curriculum updated on 18 June 2025 lists Finnish as A1 and English as A2 for every pupil from year 1, with that English arrangement dated from 1 January 2020. A1 and A2 are Finnish curriculum categories for long language syllabuses, not proficiency levels. In years 8–9, optional B2, a shorter additional-language syllabus, may be French, German or Spanish.
Compare FISTA, the Finnish International School of Tampere, if the priority is English-medium basic education. It is run by the City of Tampere at Satakunnankatu 60. Teaching language and the available school stages are the useful distinctions; check the admissions conditions separately at each school.
School community and care
SST was founded in 1895. Its homepage and curriculum use different population figures:
| Source |
Pupils included |
Staff |
| Homepage |
Just over 300, years 1–9 and upper secondary |
28 teachers, 14 other staff |
| Curriculum, updates approved 18 June 2025 |
Just over 370, including preschool, years 1–9 and upper secondary |
Over 30 teachers, 14 other staff |
The sources cover partly different groups, so neither should be treated as a verified current total for the whole school.
Svenska barndaghemmet i Tammerfors, the Swedish daycare centre, is in the same block. The contact page lists eftis, or afternoon care, for preschool children and pupils in years 1–2. Confirm the care hours, places and fees for the child’s age. Test the daily journey to Koulukatu at the times the family would actually travel.
Admissions and home municipality
The basic-school page provides a form for pupils who do not live in Tampere. Families should identify their home municipality when contacting the school, since the applicable arrangements may differ. The reviewed pages did not establish a current deadline or waiting-list position.
A Lempäälä education-board decision dated 13 January 2026 renewed its agreement with the maintaining association for Swedish-language preschool and years 1–9, covering 1 January 2026–31 December 2028. This is evidence of an arrangement for Lempäälä; it does not establish automatic admission or the rules for every neighbouring municipality.
For upper secondary, ask the study counsellor which joint-application round and entry requirements apply. The existing research did not establish a usable 2026 application timetable from the gymnasium page.
Costs and what remains to confirm
The reviewed homepage, contact page and 2025 curriculum did not publish a 2026/27 schedule of school or care charges. Private governance alone does not establish what a family pays. Ask the office for written details of any applicable school, association and afternoon-care charges.
A welcome brochure dated 15 April 2019 described free lunch at 11.00am and free transport above stated distance thresholds. Those are historical arrangements, not confirmation of current lunch times or transport eligibility. Ask for the rules that apply to the child’s home address and year group.
Our view
Choose SST if Swedish-medium schooling and continuity through the Finnish matriculation examination fit the child’s plans. Compare FISTA if English-medium basic education would serve the child better.
