Choosing a school in Tampere: English, Swedish and upper-secondary routes

Tampere now has a clearer English pathway across age groups, but it is not automatic. FISTA provides tuition-free English-medium Finnish education through Grade 9. Pyynikin lukio offers an eligibility-limited English route to the Finnish matriculation examination, while Svenska samskolan provides Swedish-medium continuity.

Tampere’s school search changes sharply with age. Finnish International School of Tampere, or FISTA, offers English-medium municipal education from preschool through Grade 9. Svenska samskolan i Tammerfors teaches in Swedish from preschool through upper secondary.

A third route now matters after Grade 9. Pyynikin lukio launched a fully English English Study Programme in August 2026. It follows the Finnish upper-secondary curriculum and leads to Finland’s matriculation examination, but national eligibility rules limit who can apply.

FISTA: English-medium Finnish basic education

FISTA is a City of Tampere school on Satakunnankatu. It follows the Finnish national curriculum mainly in English and charges no tuition. Books, learning materials and the daily school lunch are free.

Finnish remains compulsory. To receive the full Finnish basic-education completion certificate after Grade 9, a pupil must pass Finnish as well as the other subjects. A family arriving in the later grades should ask whether the child can realistically meet that requirement before leaving.

Tampere residents receive priority, but regional applicants are not automatically excluded. New entrants normally start in preschool, Grade 1 or Grade 7. Other grades can consider children moving into the Tampere region who use English at home or have completed at least one year of English-medium education. Applicants must be living in Finland before admission.

Preschool has no language test and does not guarantee a later Grade 1 place. For Grade 1 in 2027–28, applications run from 4 to 20 January 2027. English assessment is scheduled for 3–4 February, with decisions by 18 February.

For Grade 7, applications run from 23 November to 7 December 2026. The English test is on 13 January 2027, with results on 10 February. FISTA Grade 6 pupils can continue without that test. External applicants need at least 60% overall and points in every section.

FISTA’s transition class is a narrow temporary-family route for pupils who cannot yet study in ordinary English or Finnish classes. It uses a modified curriculum and cannot issue the Finnish basic-education completion certificate. Do not choose it near Grade 9 without a clear next-school plan.

Pyynikin lukio: English upper secondary with strict eligibility

The English Study Programme at Pyynikin lukio is not an IB Diploma. It delivers the Finnish upper-secondary curriculum in English and the Finnish matriculation examination in English.

All pupils study Finnish or Swedish as a second language and sit that language examination as part of the matriculation examination. The first cohort of 27 students began in August 2026.

The programme is intended for pupils whose Finnish or Swedish is not sufficient for upper-secondary study. Eligibility normally means the applicant has completed no more than three years of basic education in Finland. A non-EU/EEA citizen must hold a residence permit granted for a reason other than study.

Applications go through the national joint-application system. Selection uses a national entrance examination in English, held in Finland in April; remote participation is not available. Previous grades are not used in the selection score. The examination covers academic readiness, upper-secondary competencies and mathematics.

Pyynikin also has a bilingual programme in which Finnish is the main teaching language and English provides support. That is the more relevant comparison for a pupil building toward Finnish-medium study. The school’s next information mornings for the bilingual and English programmes are listed for 9 December 2026 and 20 January 2027, with an open day on 23 January 2027.

Svenska samskolan: Swedish continuity

Svenska samskolan is a private Swedish-language day school on Koulukatu. It covers preschool, Grades 1–9 and gymnasium through the Finnish student examination.

This can be the best fit when Swedish is already a working family or school language and the pupil wants continuity in Finland’s Swedish-language system. Finnish is studied as the first additional language and English from the first school year.

The school’s live pages do not publish a current pupil fee or full 2027 admissions calendar. Its basic-school page distinguishes applications from pupils living outside Tampere, and neighbouring municipalities may have service agreements. Ask the school office which municipality, form and deadline apply to the child.
