Cygnaeus skola is a municipal Swedish-language school for Grades 1–6 in Turku. Its address is Maariankatu 7, 20100 Turku, written Mariegatan 7, Åbo in Swedish. These are two language versions of the same address.
The school describes its pupils as Swedish-speaking and bilingual children from Turku and the surrounding area. For a newcomer, the important question is whether the child can participate in Swedish and what support the school can provide. A family connection to the language is not, by itself, an assessment of readiness.
Curriculum and school setting
Cygnaeus provides the primary years of Finland’s basic education in Swedish. It is not an English-medium international programme. Compare Turku International School if English is the teaching language your child needs; the schools have different application arrangements.
The school ends at Grade 6. If you expect to stay longer, ask about the transition to Swedish-language Grades 7–9, including S:t Olofsskolan. Confirm the placement arrangements rather than assuming that enrolment at Cygnaeus reserves a later place.
Enrolment
Turku’s Swedish-language schools share an admission area. Parents may apply to their preferred Swedish-language school, but a preference is not an unconditional guarantee of a place.
Basic education normally starts in the year a child turns seven. Earlier or later entry requires a separate decision. The city sends an education notification to guardians of children starting school.
Enrolment uses Wilma, the school’s online administration and home–school communication system. The city enrolment page says to select Swedish and still gives 17 December 2025 as its deadline. That is not a future deadline for 2027 entry. Ask the school office for the correct dates and the procedure if you have recently arrived or do not yet have access.
The published first-grade allocation criteria give priority in this order:
- Health-related reasons or support needs.
- Accessibility, assessed using the Föli journey planner, with a safe walking route considered before public transport.
- A sibling at the school.
- Drawing lots.
Check how those criteria apply to your address and circumstances, particularly if you live outside Turku. Do not treat the general first-grade procedure as a confirmed route for a mid-year transfer.
Fees and care outside lessons
The city states that its Swedish-language basic education is free. Before- and after-school care is a separate service, so free schooling should not be read as a free full-day childcare arrangement.
Folkhälsan runs afternoon care, known locally as eftis, in the building. Cygnaeus morgonklubb r.f. provides morning activities and afternoon care for Grades 3–4. The school also identifies parish afternoon care across the street.
Our view
Cygnaeus is worth considering if your family wants Swedish-language primary education and the central Turku journey is practical. Check language readiness and any required support before deciding that it is the right placement.
