Turku school search: English and Swedish municipal routes

Turku's main language-route choices are municipal rather than fee-charging international schools. TIS provides English-medium Finnish basic education through Grade 9 in Kupittaa. Cygnaeus provides Swedish-language Years 1–6, followed by S:t Olofsskolan for Years 7–9.

Families seeking education in English or Swedish in Turku are usually entering the Finnish municipal system, not buying a separate international curriculum. That means there is no international-school tuition bill, but language suitability, application route and the next transition still need careful checking.

English basic education at TIS

Turku International School provides the Finnish national curriculum in English for Grades 1–9. It is intended for children who can study in English, including international arrivals and Finnish families returning from abroad. The city uses a separate application process rather than the ordinary neighbourhood-school allocation.

The school moved into renovated premises in Kupittaa in 2026. Turku took over delivery of the basic-education programme from the University of Turku in August 2025. Families holding older documents should therefore confirm the current entrance, contact details and administrative process rather than relying on a former university page.

Ask how the school evaluates a child’s English and recent learning. An English-speaking child may still need help with Finnish or another subject; conversely, conversational English alone may not be enough for older-grade academic work. Availability must be checked for the exact year group.

Swedish basic education from Cygnaeus

Cygnaeus skola is a municipal Swedish-language school on Maariankatu, or Mariegatan in Swedish. It covers Years 1–6. Turku treats Swedish-language basic education as one shared admission area, so this is not simply a nearest-address entitlement. Families apply through the city’s stated process, normally using Wilma.

The route continues for Years 7–9 at S:t Olofsskolan on Sirkkalankatu. Ask the city how the transition works for your address and whether any language assessment or separate decision is required. Cygnaeus is most relevant where Swedish will be a genuine language of learning, not merely an enrichment subject.

Plan the upper-secondary transition early

TIS ends with Grade 9. English-medium upper-secondary education is a separate decision. Turku currently points families to the University of Turku’s upper-secondary provision at Turku International School and to the IB at Turku Normal School. The city is also preparing its first municipal English-language general upper-secondary programme for 2027.

Those routes have their own admissions requirements and may change before a younger child reaches them. Ask what qualification each route awards, which operator runs it and whether a preparatory year is involved. Do not assume that a TIS basic-school place guarantees a place in any upper-secondary programme.

The Swedish route likewise continues beyond compulsory school through separate upper-secondary applications. If the family may later move elsewhere in Finland, ask how course choices and language records transfer.

The city pages still display some dates from the 2026 first-grade process. They should not be reused as 2027 deadlines. The Finland country guide explains municipal placement and upper-secondary choices; the language guide offers questions about learning in a new language.

Friendly orientation, not formal admissions advice. Always confirm dates with the school.
