Salem combines German-language Abitur and English-language IB routes with a boarding programme that requires service, sport and responsibility. The right academic language, the age-group campus and the full cost matter more than the school’s reputation.
Schule Schloss Salem is a coeducational, state-recognised Gymnasium with boarding on Lake Constance. Founded in 1920 in the educational tradition of Kurt Hahn, it reports about 280 staff, pupils from over 45 nations and around 95% boarding participation. Its published capacity is 600 boarding places, not a statement of current occupancy. Limited day and full-day places are available to pupils living with their parents in the surrounding region.
Salem offers the German-language Abitur and the English-language International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma. Its International Classes, starting in Grade 8, teach the Baden-Württemberg curriculum in English before the upper-school choice. These classes are preparation, not a separate leaving qualification.

The school reports boarding groups of 14–16 in Grades 5–7, 18–20 in Grades 8–10 and an average of 18 in the upper school. Teaching classes have 10–20 pupils. The published teacher–pupil ratio is 1:4; that overall figure should not be mistaken for class size or a guarantee of individual supervision.
German and English are the everyday languages. Grades 5–6 offer intensive German as a Foreign Language for non-native speakers. English begins in Grade 5, with provision for native speakers too. From Grade 6, pupils choose Latin or French as a second foreign language. From Grade 8, options include Spanish or French as a third language, or a science or music profile.
In Grades 8–10, the German-medium Gymnasium continues towards the Abitur, while the International Classes teach the state curriculum in English. Salem describes itself as the only school in Germany offering this particular international-class model from Grade 8. After Grade 10, the upper-school routes are Abitur or IB, subject to suitable placement and language skills.
10PLUS at Spetzgart is an Aufbaugymnasium, an entry route into upper-secondary Gymnasium education for pupils joining from other educational backgrounds. Its dedicated brochure gives the details. Grades 11–12 are based first at Spetzgart and then at Härlen. The published model is Abitur after eight Gymnasium years, or the two-year IB Diploma Programme.
Applicants to the Abitur route need secure spoken and written German. The International Classes and IB require spoken and written English fluency. Bilingualism alone does not settle which course is appropriate; discuss academic language and placement results. Ask separately about current provision for maintaining any other home language.
The Council of International Schools (CIS) re-accredited Salem in January 2025. Salem appears as school 000622 on the IB/KMK recognition list. The KMK is Germany’s conference of state education ministers; recognition of an IB Diploma for German university entrance depends on its conditions, including the pupil’s subject choices. The IB is not simply another name for the German Abitur. Ask the IB office to check the proposed subjects against the intended university route.
Salem’s admissions conditions require pupils to be ready for both academic and boarding expectations. Service activities, guilds and sport are compulsory, and pupils are expected to take on duties and positions of responsibility. “Guilds” is the school’s term for part of its practical extracurricular programme; ask what your child would join.
The school describes three years of compulsory social service, with options including the fire brigade, Red Cross, technical relief, the German lifesaving association DLRG and social services. Eight years of health education accompany this. Democratic participation includes a school constitution, a middle-school council, an upper-school parliament and a system of pupil offices.
Facilities and activities include an indoor pool at Schloss Salem, a lake harbour with sailing boats and sea kayaks, traditional hockey and 20 other sports. Music includes instrumental tuition, bands, orchestra and choir. Theatre runs throughout the year, with Theatre Arts available in the IB. Outdoor learning ranges from hut-based hikes to multi-week trips and the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award. Salem is a founding member of Round Square, an international school network, and reports exchanges with more than 50 partner schools.
These opportunities suit pupils willing to participate in a structured community. They do not establish what individual learning or pastoral support is available. Share current reports and ask whether classroom and boarding staff can meet your child’s needs within these group sizes. The published material does not present Salem as a specialist school for special educational needs.
The process involves a written application, a visit or digital interview and a placement test. Forms, the school-and-boarding contract and an interview guide are in the downloads. Specify the intended year and route: Abitur, International Classes or IB.
Normal entry is into Grades 5–11. Grade 12 entry is exceptional. Mid-year entry is generally discouraged but may be allowed in justified cases. Discuss either exception before paying an admission fee.
Salem reports merit scholarships for about 20% of pupils, with a long-term goal of 30%. These figures do not indicate an individual applicant’s chances. Basic awards are independent of family income and may, within available resources, be supplemented by income-dependent partial scholarships. Applications are accepted throughout the year for the following school year, using separate scholarship forms and conditions.
The figures below come from the 2026–27 admission and fee PDF, marked valid from 1 January 2026. On 31 August 2026, the live admissions table showed higher monthly rates of €4,680 / €5,280 / €4,780 / €5,700, alongside downloads for 2027–28. Those are not the figures used here. Choose the PDF matching the proposed school year; do not combine schedules.

The deposit is a one-time security payment, refunded at the end of the contract. With annual payment it is the amount shown above, not a year’s fees. The administration surcharge covers additional work integrating pupils from other school systems. Ask whether it applies to your child. Scholarship arrangements may differ.
For example, the annual-payment IB deposit is €4,950 alongside the €59,400 annual fee, admission charge, any applicable administration surcharge and extras. A Grade 7 boarder paying monthly has a €13,350 deposit alongside the €4,450 monthly fee. These deposits are upfront cash requirements even though refundable.
Salem is a non-profit gGmbH, a German limited-liability company with charitable status. Baden-Württemberg subsidises part of tuition; parental fees cover the remaining costs. The combined school-and-boarding fee, called SIG in German and SBF in English, is set annually. Payment obligations continue through 31 August regardless of holidays or Abitur/IB examination dates. Direct debit is mandatory for payments from Germany.
The 2026–27 PDF gives a 10% reduction in the combined fee for each sibling when siblings attend simultaneously, and 1.5% for children of Salem alumni. The latter is an alumni condition, not an annual-payment discount. Confirm eligibility and whether reductions may be combined.
The admissions page estimates incidental costs at about €200 per month, billed separately under the general contract terms. Examples include individual music tuition, exchanges, uniform and excursions. This is an estimate, not a fixed annual allowance. Request the additional-costs example for the relevant year group.
Day and full-day fees have separate 2026–27 and 2027–28 PDFs in the downloads. Local day families should obtain those figures; the boarding table is not their quotation.
The school can certify the eligible schooling share of the combined fee and care costs for children up to age 14. Under section 10 of Germany’s Income Tax Act, qualifying school fees may receive a 30% special-expense deduction, capped at €5,000 per child annually, subject to eligibility. Boarding, care and meals are excluded from that school-fee deduction. It is not a 30% refund of the total invoice. Ask a German tax adviser about your circumstances and any separate childcare treatment.
Salem is worth considering when either Abitur or IB fits the pupil’s academic language and future plans, and the pupil wants a boarding community with compulsory participation and responsibility. Budget for the 2026–27 monthly school-and-boarding charge of €4,450–€4,950, the applicable initial charges and deposits, and variable extras.

BIS is an English-medium day school with primary provision on both campuses and secondary provision in Haimhausen. It offers all four IB programmes, but its Grade 11–12 routes do not carry the same recognition. Admissions are rolling and capacity-led.
KleinmachnowBBIS offers English-language education from age three through Grade 12, with boarding from Grade 9. Its Kleinmachnow location and the separate tuition, registration and boarding charges are central to the decision.
BonnBonn International School offers the full IB continuum in English, with German taught in every grade. It is a day school in southern Bonn, not a Düsseldorf campus. Its current online fee table is undated, so families planning for 2026–27 should confirm the figures in writing.
BerlinCanisius-Kolleg offers two German-medium routes in one Jesuit day school. Grade 5 Gymnasium entry and a new Grade 7 Pedro Arrupe ISS cohort are open for 2027–28, while fees depend on family income.
