Næstved Gymnasium og HF — Danish STX, HF and supported routes

NGH is a public Danish upper-secondary day school, not an international or boarding school. Its useful distinction is choice: ordinary STX and HF sit alongside a three-year supported HF and a small autism-focused STX class.

Næstved Gymnasium og HF (NGH) is a public, Danish-medium upper-secondary school at Nygårdsvej 43. It charges no tuition and has no boarding. Do not confuse it with Herlufsholm, the fee-paying day and boarding school elsewhere in Næstved that also offers Pre-IB and IB.

Our view: a useful choice of Danish routes

NGH is a strong local option for a student who can study in Danish and wants a national qualification. It is particularly worth considering when ordinary STX or HF is not quite the right learning structure, because the school also publishes two supported routes with clear eligibility rules.

  • STX is the broad three-year Danish upper-secondary qualification. Students choose a subject combination, called a studieretning, after an initial foundation period.
  • HF is a two-year general upper-secondary examination with a more applied orientation and subject packages. Depending on the later degree, a graduate may need supplementary subjects for university entry.
  • HF3 spreads an HF programme across three years for students who are formally assessed as needing more time and support.
  • ASF is a three-year STX class designed for students with an autism-spectrum diagnosis. It leads to the same general STX qualification rather than a separate special-school certificate.

None is an English-medium programme. NGH offers languages as subjects, but the school’s English information page is not evidence of an English STX.

Applying for 2027 entry

NGH’s own general admissions page still shows 1 March 2026, so its dates have not yet been updated for the next cohort. The Ministry of Children and Education gives the continuing national rule: applicants for STX and HF apply through Optagelse.dk by 1 March at 12:00 noon in the year they wish to start. For an August 2027 start, that means 1 March 2027 at noon.

Applying by the deadline places the student in the central allocation process. A reserved place is not final admission; the applicant must still meet the national entry requirements. A student without a Danish CPR number can use the platform’s SMS route rather than MitID.

For a transfer during the school year, NGH asks for the Optagelse.dk application and the requested subjects. The family must also provide a reason for moving, Grade 9 or 10 certificates, current grades and attendance. Contact a guidance counsellor first: curriculum mismatches can prevent a transfer even where a seat appears available.

The ASF autism-focused STX class

The ASF route uses a class of at most 12 students in a dedicated room. The school says the teachers receive relevant training, a specialist takes part in admissions, and each class has two class teachers, a guidance counsellor and an additional adult for regular conversations. Some electives in 3.g are shared with other students. The aim remains participation in ordinary STX requirements, including physical education, common events and the 2.g study trip where possible.

The published eligibility conditions are consequential. An applicant must:

  1. have completed the Danish Grade 9 examinations, and Grade 10 examinations if applicable;
  2. meet the ordinary STX entry requirements and have studied German in lower school;
  3. have an autism-spectrum diagnosis and a doctor’s recommendation for a specialised course; and
  4. provide the signed special-education recommendation from the municipal youth guidance counsellor when applying from Grade 9 or 10.

On Optagelse.dk, NGH must be the highest priority. The student applies to ordinary STX, chooses continuing German and visual art, selects the ASF priority category and answers yes to the support question. The medical and municipal documents must be attached, and the school asks the family to notify its ASF coordinator after submission. Every applicant attends a suitability interview.

The ASF page still lists March and April 2026 interview and test dates. Those dates have passed and must not be reused for 2027. Ask NGH when the new interview, national admissions test and decision schedule will be published.

HF3: supported HF over three years

HF3 is designed for students with needs such as dyslexia, anxiety or ADHD who require a calmer, more structured course. Admission is by individual assessment. The school asks for school records and relevant diagnostic or dyslexia documentation, followed by an interview.

The programme has a fixed classroom, a shorter day, regular mentor meetings, two support teachers attached to the class and a three-day study trip normally in the second year. The published subject package is People and Society, with social science and psychology, alongside the core HF subjects. It is still an HF qualification; the extra year changes the pace and support, not the award.

Apply through Optagelse.dk by the same 1 March deadline and select the priority category for an extended class for students with special needs. The school says exceptional late applications may be considered, but that is discretionary and should be agreed directly.

Costs beyond tuition

There is no school tuition, but the student needs a laptop and pays for some materials and trips. Two current official pages contradict each other on the maximum contribution to teaching materials:

  • the parent expenses page says DKK 1,500 across the full two- or three-year programme;
  • the study and conduct rules say DKK 2,500 across the student’s time at NGH.

Budget to the higher figure until the school resolves the conflict in writing. The expenses page also estimates mathematics software at about DKK 175 a year and provides DKK 120 of printing credit each year.

The same page publishes maximum trip prices, although it does not label them by academic year:

Trip Published maximum
Second-foreign-language trip in 2.g DKK 5,000
Subject-combination trip in 2.g DKK 5,000
Global Studies trip in 3.g DKK 8,500
Taiwan trip, offered every other year DKK 9,500
2.HF trip DKK 5,000

Food and personal spending are additional. Students who do not travel complete an assignment and attend school. Ask whether the limits have been approved for the student’s cohort and which trips apply to HF3 or ASF.

General support and examination adjustments

Beyond HF3 and ASF, NGH offers study guidance, maths screening for first-year students, targeted maths courses, reading and dyslexia assessment, homework help and student coaches. First-year classes are screened for reading and mathematics needs.

Students with dyslexia or a documented physical or psychological disability may apply for special examination conditions. Dyslexic students must have been awarded SPS, Denmark’s special educational support, while other conditions require medical documentation. Documentation does not guarantee a particular adjustment. The page sets annual internal deadlines of 1 November for HF and 1 December for STX, with limited exceptions for a later diagnosis.
