The two profiled schools solve different problems. Næstved Gymnasium og HF, at Nygårdsvej 43, offers the Danish three-year STX and two-year HF upper-secondary qualifications. Herlufsholm, at Herlufsholm Allé 170, is a private day-and-boarding school with Danish lower-secondary years, STX, Pre-IB and the IB Diploma.
Neither is a general international school for young children. Herlufsholm starts in Year 6. Næstved Gymnasium starts after compulsory schooling.
Match the qualification first
Choose Næstved Gymnasium for a day pupil who wants Danish STX or HF. Its ASF class is an adapted three-year STX route for pupils with autism-spectrum support needs. It requires a specific application and suitability conversation; it should not be treated as a general small-class option.
Choose Herlufsholm if the child needs boarding or an English-taught senior international route. Pre-IB is one preparatory year followed by the two-year IB Diploma. Herlufsholm also offers STX, so confirm whether Danish or English will be the principal academic language.
For a day place, test Nygårdsvej and Herlufsholm Allé from your actual home. The school recommends that Herlufsholm day pupils do not live farther away than Køge, Slagelse or Vordingborg, but that is not a travel-time guarantee.
Use the correct application
Public STX and HF applications use optagelse.dk. Næstved Gymnasium’s published page still describes the 2026 cycle; ask for the 2027 date and late-transfer process.
Herlufsholm requires its own application even when a senior-school application also goes through optagelse.dk. Pre-IB and IB are rolling, with an official recommendation to apply before 1 June. The school expects about grade 7 in Danish, English and mathematics for STX, and reviews records plus readiness.
Boarding admission is not simply the addition of a bed to a day offer. Ask which pupil residence, weekend arrangements and holidays apply before accepting.
Obtain a complete cost quotation
Herlufsholm says fees are paid quarterly in advance. Day fees include lunch; boarding fees include accommodation, meals, laundry and healthcare. Its public “main expenses” pages currently do not display the promised kroner amounts. Ask for the current day or boarding schedule, plus excursions, events and uniform costs. Need-based reductions and sibling discounts may be available, but must be applied for.
Næstved Gymnasium is publicly funded and does not charge boarding tuition. Pupils still need a computer and contribute to materials and study trips. Two school documents show conflicting total ceilings of DKK 1,500 and DKK 2,500 for teaching materials; ask which current rule applies.
Choose the education and living arrangement first, then compare the full first-year cost. The Næstved overview and Denmark guide provide the broader context.
