Aarhus International School (AIS) is an English-medium IB day school for children from age 3 to about 16. It is authorised for the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and Middle Years Programme (MYP). It does not offer the two-year IB Diploma Programme, so an MYP5 pupil must apply to another upper-secondary school.
All sections now operate at Dalgas Avenue 12. The school moved Early Years from Bushøjvænget as part of its One Campus project, completed in 2024. Some older admissions and policy pages still show the previous site; the current address and annual report confirm the single-campus arrangement.
Who should shortlist it
AIS suits families in and around Aarhus who want a continuous English-medium IB education through age 16. Kindergarten covers PYP1–3, followed by PYP4–8 and MYP1–5. Danish is taught at different levels. The Danish A language-and-literature route leads to the Danish Grade 9 examination; Danish B and C are acquisition routes.
The school is not a boarding school and does not provide the IB Diploma. Before accepting an MYP place, ask which Aarhus or regional upper-secondary routes fit the pupil’s language profile and intended qualification. Entry to a later IB Diploma is a separate application, not an automatic progression from AIS.
How admission works
Families are encouraged to visit before applying through OpenApply. The file normally includes recent school reports, a photograph, passport or identity documents and the Danish health card if available. The school may interview parents and seek a recommendation from the child’s current teacher. A place is not confirmed until that recommendation has been received and the school has made a formal offer.
The confirmation fee is payable after an offer. It is not an application fee and should not be paid simply to join a waiting list. Ask the admissions team to confirm the class, start date, support arrangements and all first invoices before accepting.
2026–27 fees
The 2026–27 Fees and Terms use different billing patterns for kindergarten and school. Kindergarten is charged for all 12 months; PYP4–MYP5 tuition is charged for 11 months, with no July invoice.
| Charge |
Published amount |
| Confirmation fee after a place is offered |
DKK 4,680 per child |
| Capital fee on the first invoice after starting |
DKK 4,680 per child |
| Kindergarten PYP1–3, 08:00–14:00 |
DKK 4,080 a month × 12 |
| Kindergarten PYP1–3, 07:00–17:00 |
DKK 4,800 a month × 12 |
| PYP4–8 tuition |
DKK 3,540 a month × 11 |
| MYP1–5 tuition |
DKK 4,380 a month × 11 |
| Full after-school programme, PYP4–8 |
DKK 900 a month × 11 |
| Morning and afternoon-to-15:00 care, PYP4–8 |
DKK 360 a month × 11 |
The confirmation fee becomes non-refundable if the family decides not to take the accepted place. The capital fee is charged once per child for materials, software and administration; it is waived for a pupil entering MYP5. Neither fee has a sibling discount.
Kindergarten entry on the first day or during the first half of a month attracts a full month’s fee. A start on the 16th attracts half a month. PYP and MYP pupils are charged the full month whenever they start. The school does not fully fund trips or summer camp. MYP clubs and summer camp are separately priced.
The highest tuition charge in a family is paid in full. The tuition of each additional sibling sharing the same custody holder is reduced to 70%. A short-term pupil staying for less than six months may receive a 50% reduction in the capital fee, provided the stay lasts at least eight weeks and the status is agreed in writing before classes begin.
CPR, municipal support and friplads
The standard fee assumes that the child has a CPR number, a Danish registered address and is physically present in Denmark by 5 September 2026. If those conditions are not met, the terms allow a surcharge of up to DKK 4,500 a month. Families facing exceptional timing should write to the school before 5 September so it can determine the applicable fee. A CPR number alone is not enough if the address and physical-presence conditions are missing.
For kindergarten, any municipal childcare subsidy is handled through Aarhus Kommune’s Pladsanvisningen and deducted from the invoice once approved.
AIS also has a school fee-relief scheme for PYP4–MYP5. For 2026–27, the published household-income ceiling is DKK 403,585. The school must receive the application by 12 September 2026, and the child must be actively enrolled with a CPR number on 5 September. Decisions are expected in December, with approved reductions applied to invoices from January to June 2027.
Care, holidays and the trial period
Kindergarten holiday care is included, but families must register in advance. PYP4–8 holiday care is included only for pupils already enrolled in the after-school programme, and it does not include summer camp. Other PYP4–8 pupils may join for a fixed fee. The school asks for holiday-care registration one month ahead.
Every new and returning pupil from PYP1 to MYP5 has a two-calendar-month trial period. During that period, the family or school can end the place without an additional notice penalty, although the current month remains payable. The capital fee is then refunded. A pupil who returns in good standing within 24 months does not pay the capital fee again if it was paid previously.
Kindergarten requires two full months’ notice to leave. PYP and MYP also require two full months’ notice before the end of a month, including at the end of the school year. After-school care requires one full month’s notice. Check the relevant deadline before signing a new-school contract.
