Lycée français Chateaubriand is a French day school in Rome, directly managed by AEFE, the agency for French education abroad. Founded in 1903 by Monseigneur Charles Dumaz, it reports about 1,500 pupils across three Roman sites. It follows the French curriculum from preschool to the Baccalauréat, with an EsaBac French–Italian dual-diploma option.
There is no boarding. The admissions page requires parents to reside in Italy during the school period. The financial rules also cover École française Alexandre Dumas in Naples, Via Francesco Crispi 86; that is a separate school, not a fourth Roman campus.

Malpighi is about 50 metres from Patrizi. Patrizi has belonged to the school since 1921; Malpighi was acquired in the late 1980s. Together they cover over 2,500 m² and are described as serving about 500 pupils. Patrizi also houses management, administration, secondary pupil services, the library and science facilities. Lodge hours for the two sites are 07:30–19:30.

Curriculum and Italian requirements
Italian is taught from maternelle through lycée. Until Troisième, pupils with at least one Italian-citizen parent must follow Lingua e Cultura Nazionale (LCN), Italian national language and culture, under the cited 1949 Franco-Italian cultural agreements. From Seconde, those pupils choose LCN or EsaBac, which combines the French Baccalauréat and Italian Esame di Stato.
Subject specialisms and optional groups in collège and lycée open only with a minimum enrolment. Confirm the actual offerings for the intended cohort, including EsaBac.
Petite section requires children to turn three by 31 December of the entry year; CP, the first primary year, requires six by 31 December. Children transferring from a French public, private or recognised AEFE school retain the sending school’s promotion decision. Those from schools not recognised as French by the ministry take a placement test; the cited pages do not establish its pass mark.
School lunch is compulsory from maternelle through Troisième. Tuition and meal charges are invoiced each quarter, and the school may propose timetable changes.
Admissions
Pre-enrolment for 2026–27 is online only, using the French version of the platform. A complete file is an application, not a guaranteed place. Incomplete files are not considered, and acceptance of one child does not admit siblings. From primary through Terminale, confirmation depends on the final report showing promotion.
After acceptance, the family pays the droits de première inscription (DPI), the first-registration fee. Enrolment takes effect on receipt. It is charged once for the child’s stay and is non-refundable.
The published document list requires the child’s birth extract, identity document and Italian tax code; both responsible adults’ identity documents; custody documents if separated; a current attendance certificate except for petite section; previous-year and available current-year reports; and IBANs for both responsible adults. Ask admissions about current availability and deadlines; no general closing date or waiting-list length is established here.
Fees for 2026–27
The official tariff decision, displayed 12 March 2026, harmonises Rome and Naples tariffs. It states a 17% tuition increase in Rome, compared with 8–10% by level in Naples. The rules say schooling is fee-paying for every nationality.

The decision also lists examination charges. For an already-enrolled pupil, the brevet fee is €140; obtain the applicable early-French-examination or Bac charge directly.
Sibling reductions apply to tuition and DPI when one legal guardian enrols at least three children: 10% for three, 20% for four and 30% for five or more, applied to all those children.
Local-contract staff working at least 50%, with no other employer covering the cost, receive an 80% exemption on the same charges. AEFE resident or seconded staff whose tuition is already covered cannot add a further reduction.
St George’s, St. Stephen’s and AOSR offer different curricula and accommodation arrangements. Compare qualifications and family needs rather than treating Rome’s international schools as interchangeable.
