Liceo Italiano di Istanbul is an Italian state school in Turkey’s foreign-school system. Its scientific lycée is at Tomtom Kaptan Sokak No: 3, 34433 Beyoğlu, Istanbul. The programme brings together Italian and Turkish requirements and teaches primarily in Italian, apart from subjects required by the Turkish curriculum.
The main reason to choose it is curricular, not cosmetic. Pupils follow the Liceo Scientifico, Italy’s academically broad scientific secondary programme. They prepare for the Italian Esame di Stato, often called the Maturità. The school also operates within Turkey’s Ministry of National Education (MEB) system. Its official diploma explanation says Turkish pupils can also obtain the Italian qualification. That requires following the appropriate curriculum and completing the examination; two diplomas are not automatic merely because a child attends the school. Confirm the chosen route and the entry requirements of any intended universities.
This is a co-educational day school. The official pages do not publish an upper-school boarding offer.
Who should consider it
Liceo Italiano suits a pupil who wants substantial study in Italian and is comfortable with a scientific secondary curriculum. For most applicants, the preparatory year, Hazırlık, develops the language before the four-year liceo. It should be treated as an academic year, not an optional orientation course.
Families choosing between European schools in Istanbul should start with teaching language and qualification. Compare Deutsche Schule Istanbul if German is the family’s academic language. Compare Pierre Loti for a French lycée route, or IICS for English-medium international education. These schools do not offer interchangeable programmes.
The separate Italian state middle school has its own eligibility rules. The school’s February 2026 registration notice says pupils who hold only Italian nationality receive priority for entry. Other applicants are subject to available capacity and class-composition limits. Entry to the second and third middle-school years is also subject to space. Families with Turkish, dual or other nationality should ask the middle school for a written eligibility decision rather than assuming either automatic access or a blanket exclusion.
Entry to the preparatory class
The 2026–27 registration cycle is complete. The school’s current registration page says its quota has been filled. The dates below describe that completed cycle and may not be reused for 2027.
The principal route used the LGS, Turkey’s central examination for pupils completing Grade 8. The school then used the MSP, the central-exam score calculated by MEB, alongside its published minimum admission score (taban puan).
The 2026 timetable was:
- LGS: 13 June 2026;
- minimum score published: 10 July;
- online pre-registration: 11–12 July;
- main registration: 13 July;
- further registration rounds: 14–17 July.
The school could admit 64 pupils through the principal LGS route. Applicants needed a valid LGS result and a score at or above the school’s published threshold.
A second route allowed the school, at its discretion, to offer up to 16 additional places. It was not limited to pupils from fully Italian-medium schools. The published requirements were:
- the pupil came from a middle school where Italian was taught as the foreign-language subject;
- the pupil held a valid Italian-language certificate at B1 or above;
- the pupil’s MSP was no more than 5% below the minimum score for the first registration round;
- the family completed registration in that first round.
Unfilled places in this smaller allocation could be transferred to candidates applying through the standard LGS route. The school was not required to fill either allocation and could stop registration without lowering its minimum score.
For future entry, wait for the next Kayıt Takvimi ve Kılavuzu (registration calendar and guide). Use its dates, score and quotas rather than assuming the 2026 process will repeat unchanged.
Applicants using the Italian-school route
The school also publishes a separate Italian registration notice. For the upper school’s non-Turkish nationality quota, it gives priority to pupils who hold only Italian nationality. Capacity and class-composition rules still apply. Families in this category should ask which procedure applies; the LGS guide is not the only document on the school’s site.
The February notice required signed application forms, parent and pupil identity documents, tax codes, Turkish residence permission and vaccination records. Transfers from other schools require the appropriate clearance, and some applicants must pass an eligibility or supplementary examination. Because this is a four-year liceo, a pupil transferring from a five-year Italian liceo may be placed one class below the level for which they previously qualified.
That notice’s deadline was 27 February 2026, so it is also a completed cycle. Request the current notice before making plans.
Documents for final registration
The 2026 guide required the family to provide identification and official records at final registration. These included:
- Turkish identity documents and a detailed civil-registration record;
- six photographs;
- proof of residence from e-Devlet;
- a payment receipt;
- a custody decision, where applicable;
- for a family claiming the Italian-citizen fee exemption, an Italian passport or consular certificate of citizenship.
Use this as a preparation list, then follow the next guide exactly. Document requirements can change.
Fees and reductions for 2026–27
The official service and fee document lists the following totals, including 10% KDV (Turkish value-added tax):
| Year |
Published 2026–27 tuition |
| Hazırlık |
650,000 TL |
| Grade 9 |
550,000 TL |
| Grade 10 |
451,000 TL |
| Grades 11–12 |
250,000 TL |
The same document lists three payment methods for the preparatory year: a single payment, up to five credit-card instalments, or a credit-account arrangement with the named bank. Families should obtain the current plan from the school before paying. Upper-school fees were due by 30 June 2026 for that cycle.
The school published several reductions. A pupil can receive only one reduction; when more than one applies, the highest is used.
- Italian citizens: 100% tuition exemption, with a €300 contribution.
- One sibling in a family with more than one pupil at the school: 5% reduction.
- Children of eligible service personnel: 50% reduction.
- Some language-certificate and Italian-curriculum performance refunds were also published, with level, year and deadline conditions.
The document also describes exemptions and scholarships governed by MEB rules, including a published allocation for registered pupils and an additional allocation connected to new pupils from earthquake-affected areas. Sponsors may support other awards. These are not automatic: use the current scholarship page and application form to confirm eligibility and timing.
What tuition does and does not cover
The school lists after-school activities, native Italian-speaking teachers for the non-Turkish-curriculum subjects, some sports, counselling, university guidance, insurance, laboratories and facilities among its provision.
Some costs remain separate. Families pay for canteen use and textbooks. School transport is managed through the parent association. Trips and cultural exchanges may also create additional costs. Ask for the current price of each before making a full-year budget.
The 2025–26 Maturità page also listed a separate Italian state examination tax. Confirm the amount and deadline for the year in which your child will sit the examination.
Our take
Choose Liceo Italiano if your child is ready to study seriously in Italian and the Liceo Scientifico is the educational route you want. The preparatory year and LGS-based admission are substantial commitments. The school is much less suitable if your priority is English-medium continuity or a rolling international-school admission process.
Italian citizenship changes the tuition calculation significantly, but families should not base the decision on that benefit alone. Confirm the pupil’s academic route, final qualifications, Italian-language support and university recognition first.
