Choosing an international or foreign-language school in Istanbul

Start with the child’s eligibility and the qualification you want to preserve. Then check the campus for the actual year group. Istanbul’s English-medium international schools, French lycée, German school and Italian liceo have different admissions rules; they are not interchangeable options for every passport.

Start with the curriculum

Istanbul International Community School, or IICS, offers an English-medium International Baccalaureate continuum, from the Primary Years Programme through the Middle Years Programme to the Diploma. It is the clearest comparison for a family wishing to remain in IB throughout a move.

IICS has two campuses. Hisar serves younger pupils in Hisarüstü, while Marmara in Hadımköy runs through Grade 12. Its campus description puts Hisar through Grade 3, although fee documents also mention higher primary grades. Get the assigned campus confirmed for the child’s year rather than resolving that discrepancy yourself.

MEF International School Istanbul is at Ulus, on Leylak Sokak. It offers the IB Primary Years Programme, then Cambridge lower-secondary and IGCSE study, followed by the IB Diploma. Compare it with IICS if English is essential but a Cambridge stage before the diploma would suit the child.

The British International STEAM School is the Etiler preschool and primary campus of The British School Istanbul. Its British-style primary curriculum has a science, technology and arts emphasis. International secondary education is at Zekeriyaköy, leading through IGCSE to the IB Diploma. A primary place in Etiler does not mean that the same daily journey will continue through secondary.

For all three, ask whether the desired IB subjects and levels are available. A school may offer the full diploma and individual IB courses, which do not produce the same qualification. Late entry into an examination course needs an individual curriculum assessment.

French, German and Italian continuity

Lycée Français Pierre Loti follows the French national curriculum within the AEFE network of French schools abroad. It is the relevant comparison for a child continuing French schooling towards the French baccalauréat.

Pierre Loti is not entirely in Tarabya. Its two-campus page places maternelle and CP–CM1 in Beyoğlu. CM2, the final primary year, and all secondary classes are in Tarabya. Check both journeys if children are in different stages.

Deutsche Schule Istanbul, also called Alman Lisesi, is a German secondary school in Beyoğlu. Its German-system admissions route and the Turkish lycée intake have different requirements. It offers a route to the German Abitur; ask which programme and certificates apply to the child’s background.

Liceo Italiano IMI, also in Beyoğlu, provides an Italian scientific-lyceum education. Its four-year secondary programme may be preceded by a preparatory year. Turkish pupils have a Turkish school-leaving route and can pursue the Italian state examination under the school’s conditions. An Italian-language school is not automatically an English-language IB alternative.

Italian-system families should read the liceo’s dedicated Italian admissions route. Turkish applicants ordinarily use its LGS process, based on Turkey’s secondary-entry examination, with a separate published route for eligible Italian speakers. These are distinct processes, not a general international application.

Check nationality rules school by school

IICS’s admissions page requires a non-Turkish passport. Its rolling process includes recent school records and an English writing assessment from Grade 6. Ask explicitly how it treats dual nationality rather than interpreting “non-Turkish passport” as permission in every case.

MEF’s 2026–27 application form requests valid foreign passports for the child and both parents. Confirm the eligibility of the whole family before paying the non-refundable application fee. An academic assessment and a complete support-needs review still follow.

The British school’s policy says Turkish pupils are not admitted. Its FAQ says dual citizens may be eligible, so written confirmation matters. It does not accept newcomers into Year 11 or Year 13, regardless of their previous curriculum.

Deutsche Schule’s German admissions page gives priority to German citizens and children of experts posted to Istanbul for a limited period. It asks for nationality evidence, school records and posting documentation. Its Turkish lycée route follows separate national admissions rules.

Pierre Loti’s published 2026–27 pre-enrolment campaign ran from 20 February to 1 May 2026 and is closed. A late-arriving family should contact the appropriate primary or secondary admissions office. Online pre-enrolment was not itself acceptance.

Read the full first-year cost

IICS publishes separate 2026–27 fee schedules by campus and by individual or corporate payer. Ask which applies when an employer contributes. New-pupil capital and registration charges, transport and devices must be considered alongside tuition.

MEF Istanbul’s 2026–27 table gives annual tuition and food totals including 10% VAT. They range from US$23,610 in preschool/pre-kindergarten to US$46,265 in the second IB year. Its annual placement payment is already included in that total; do not add it again. The US$1,250 application fee and US$4,250 new-pupil registration charge are separate. Registration is due from Grade 1; early-childhood entrants defer it until then.

The British school’s 2026–27 instalment totals include US$47,550 for primary and US$49,050 for Years 7–10. Application is US$1,250 and registration is US$5,500 from Year 1, with early-years pupils paying registration when they reach that year. The displayed early-payment deadlines have passed. Ask about transport, trips and withdrawal terms before comparing the total with another school.

Deutsche Schule now publishes a 2026–27 German-track fee document. Single-payment tuition including VAT is €18,800 for Classes 5–8 and €19,500 for Classes 9–11. Its €3,000 deposit is credited against the year’s fees, not an additional tuition charge.

Pierre Loti’s fee page still links a 2025–26 schedule as of 4 September 2026. Request the current amount rather than using that older year as a quote. Liceo Italiano has its own 2026–27 tariffs and nationality-based fee arrangements, detailed in its profile. A German, French or Italian school cannot be budgeted from a neighbouring school’s tariff.

Choose the address after the school route

The campuses discussed here are on Istanbul’s European side, but they are not neighbouring destinations. Hadımköy, Hisarüstü, Ulus, Etiler, Beyoğlu, Tarabya and Zekeriyaköy require separate journey checks. Use the actual school bus route and the child’s collection time, not a generic city-centre driving estimate.

For siblings, ask when each would change campuses. For a teenager, confirm subjects and graduation requirements before choosing housing. If a future transfer into Turkish education matters, ask the Ministry of National Education about equivalence, known as denklik, for the proposed programme.

A Turkish-curriculum private school, often called a kolej, may also be appropriate. Its entry process must be checked individually; these schools do not all use one examination rule. The Turkey guide explains the broader distinctions.

Use the school-choice guide and language guide to prepare the first enquiry. If the relocation location is still undecided, compare the separate Ankara and Izmir guides.

Friendly orientation, not formal admissions advice. Always confirm dates with the school.
