Deutsche Schule Istanbul, also known as Alman Lisesi, is a co-educational day school at Şahkulu Bostanı Sokak 8 in Beyoğlu. German and Turkish are central to its education. It is not an English-medium international school.
The school has distinct admission procedures. A family continuing German schooling should use the German-entry information. A pupil applying through Turkey’s national secondary-school system should use the Özel Alman Lisesi admissions process. Eligibility and prices must not be transferred from one route to the other.
The German-entry process
The German admissions page gives priority to German nationals. It also prioritises children of Entsandte: specialists sent to Istanbul temporarily by an employer or institution.
The page does not publish a complete ranking between those groups. Neither citizenship nor a posting letter guarantees admission; the head decides. The current application PDF also asks for evidence of continuous schooling in the German system.
Prepare the documents in three groups:
- Identity and residence: citizenship evidence for the child and parents, valid residence permits, and relevant custody documents.
- Schooling: all previous half-year and end-year reports. Primary-school recommendations are required for the specified Grade 5 or 6 entries.
- Employment and posting: work-permit or employment-contract evidence and an employer’s letter giving the posting period.
The school requires a deposit for binding admission. Final registration takes place in person with the child after arrival in Istanbul, at the head’s secretariat. Ask for a written admission decision and any outstanding conditions before making an irreversible relocation commitment.
The Turkish Lise route
Turkish-track entry follows the rules set by the Ministry of National Education and the school’s LGS-based admissions campaign. LGS is Turkey’s national exam used for entry to selective secondary schools.
The school’s structure page describes one preparatory year followed by Grades 9–12. It aims for pupils to gain the Turkish high-school diploma and, by passing the relevant examinations, the Abitur.
It would therefore be wrong to describe this as a choice between a Turkish diploma and a German qualification. The Turkish-entry route can lead to both. What differs is how pupils enter, their programme sequence and the requirements they must satisfy.
Follow the current Lise admissions page for its score, ranking and registration stages. A notice about this route’s capacity does not establish whether a German-entry place exists.
German-entry fees for 2026/27
The official 2026/27 application PDF publishes annual fees for a single payment, including 10% VAT:
| German class |
Annual tuition |
| Classes 5–8 |
€18,800 |
| Classes 9–11 |
€19,500 |
The €3,000 deposit is credited against the current year’s tuition, according to the German admissions page. It is not an additional €3,000 tuition charge on top of the annual figure.
These are the German-entry schedule’s class bands. They are not the Turkish Lise price list and should not be extended to a class the PDF does not list. Ask the office for the correct contract, timing, extras and withdrawal rules.
The PDF allows limited fee reductions under the relevant private-school rules. Family finances, the pupil’s achievement and conduct are considered; it does not promise a general automatic discount.
The daily practicalities
School buses are arranged through the parents’ association. The school warns that not every district can necessarily be served. Confirm an actual route before selecting a home based on a map alone.
Canteen arrangements are separate. Ask about meals, transport and required materials when requesting the complete first-year budget. None should be assumed to be included simply because the fee table quotes one annual amount.
Our take
The first conversation should establish the correct route, not just the desired language. Send the nationality, posting and school history together. Then ask which qualifications the child will work towards and which fees apply. That prevents a Turkish-track admissions notice or a German-track price from being used for the wrong pupil.
