King’s College Soto de Viñuelas is worth considering for families who want British schooling north of Madrid with both day attendance and boarding, and an A-level or IB Diploma choice in Sixth Form. Day provision starts in the Baby Unit at 16 weeks; Tenbury House boarding is for ages 11–18.

The co-educational school is at Paseo de los Andes 35, Soto de Viñuelas, Tres Cantos. It reports capacity for more than 1,600 pupils, not a current enrolment total. Founded by Sir Roger Fry in 1969, it first operated in Chamartín, where numbers approached 500, before moving to Soto in 1978. It joined Inspired in 2019.

This is the Soto campus, not the separate King’s schools in Chamartín or La Moraleja. Test the journey from home rather than relying on a general Madrid location. The boarding page estimates about 20 minutes by car to Barajas Airport, but actual travel depends on conditions.

Education and languages

The school describes an English-medium curriculum based on England and Wales, followed by IGCSE examinations in Years 10–11 and two-year A-level or International Baccalaureate Diploma programmes in Years 12–13. It states that it is authorised in the Comunidad de Madrid and reports British Schools Overseas (BSO) and Penta accreditation.

For the youngest children, provision includes Baby Unit, Pre-Pre-Nursery, Pre-Nursery, Nursery and Reception. A Pre-Nursery entrant should turn two before 31 December of the entry year. Primary covers Years 1–6. Secondary includes languages, physical education, drama, public speaking and art alongside the academic curriculum.

Students transferring into Year 10 or 11 from another system may be offered a reduced one-year IGCSE programme. The admissions information also expects Year 11 applicants to have completed Year 10 of the British curriculum. Ask how these conditions apply to the individual transfer; the shortened programme is not an automatic alternative.

Sixth Form accepts new students. Careers staff offer individual guidance on the A-level or IB choice. Confirm the subjects, entry requirements and university recognition appropriate to the intended country, particularly for Spanish public universities.

The school reports 2026 IB results of a highest score of 44, an average of 36.5 and 34% scoring 38 or more. Its 2025 A-level results are 20% A and 45% A–A**; 2026 IGCSE results are 51% A, 66% A–A and 82% A*–B**. These are school-reported cohort results, not a forecast for a new pupil.

Spanish and English support

New students need no prior Spanish. From Key Stage 1, the early primary stage, pupils with limited Spanish receive Spanish as a Second Language support. Pupils with limited English from that stage onward enter English as an Additional Language (EAL) support. Parents pay for EAL, and the school decides its duration.

Spanish nationals must take Validation Studies, including Spanish Language and Humanities, to meet the requirement described by the school. This is not an optional extracurricular activity. Ask how it fits the timetable and what documentation it provides for recognition in Spain.

Campus and boarding

The school lists an artificial-turf field, heated indoor swimming pool, sports centre and gym, horse-riding facilities, auditorium and outdoor sports areas. Its history records a 15-laboratory science block and sports-centre development in 2017, and Tenbury House opening in September 2011.

Some published campus details conflict: one page says 12 hectares, another 12 acres. The fee PDFs use postcode 28760, while the Spanish boarding page also uses 28761. These do not need to determine the school choice, but confirm the usable address and inspect the facilities relevant to the child.

Tenbury House’s historical timeline gives capacity as 70, while the boarding page gives 60. Ask for the current capacity and occupancy. Rooms have en-suite bathrooms, heating, air conditioning and Wi-Fi. Most pupils share with others of similar age; boys and girls occupy separate floors, with staff families living on each floor.

The residence has a dining room, common room, cinema room, kitchen and laundry. The school describes at least two boarding staff on duty and another on call, supervised homework and weekend visits to Tres Cantos or Madrid. Independent weekend travel requires an advance parent email to the Head of Boarding.

Parents arrange the necessary visas, including Type D/student documentation where applicable, and travel at the beginning and end of term. Senior residential staff meet pupils at Madrid Airport and arrange their return to the airport or station at term end. Discuss permissions, holiday arrangements and weekend attendance before choosing boarding for an eleven-year-old.

Applying

Start with an enquiry, followed by a visit or online interview if abroad, then the application. The admissions page requests:

  • A birth certificate, family record (Libro de Familia), identity card or passport for the child, and parents’ identity documents.
  • A passport-size photograph and, where applicable, two academic years of reports.
  • Custody or divorce agreements and academic or psychological assessments, where applicable.
  • A current-school teacher’s reference contact from Year 6 onward.

Assessment differs by year:

Applicant Assessment
Years 1–3 Literacy and numeracy meeting with the Head of Primary
Year 4 onward Online Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT4) and written English; €30 non-refundable assessment fee
Year 11 onward and all boarders Interview with a senior secondary academic, online or on campus

Overseas applicants may take tests at their current school. Offers arrive by letter or email. Acceptance requires a non-refundable enrolment fee, and boarders also pay a returnable security deposit, before admissions formally confirms the place.

Applications are accepted throughout the year, including for Baby Unit, but Year 11 and Sixth Form have additional academic requirements. Ask about the feasibility of a mid-course move before leaving the current school.

Fees: historical 2024/25 figures, not a current quote

The existing research obtained complete 2024/25 day and boarding tables. The Spanish fees page also links a 2026/27 residence document, but its amounts were not established in that research. Obtain current fees from the school before budgeting. Prices are normally reviewed in February.

The following historical figures provide structure, not confirmed prices for a new application.

Fee 2024–25
Enrolment / matriculation (non-refundable, on acceptance) €1,700
Assessment from Year 4 (CAT4 + written English) €30

The boarding document describes an annual re-enrolment payment credited against the following year’s first term, not an extra charge to add again. It also lists €610 annually for immigration-document support for non-EU boarders and non-Spanish EU boarders without a current NIE, TIE or residence permit. Confirm the category and current charge.

Day tuition, 2024/25

These are per-term amounts, with books and materials included; there are three terms.

Year group Per term
Nursery €2,600

At those historical rates, Year 7 tuition totals €13,440 annually. Lunch is additional and compulsory on the Spanish table, at €628 per term. Baby Unit and Pre-Nursery are listed at €605 monthly for 09:00–17:00, with €95 for Pre-Nursery meals.

Historical EAL charges per term are €1,395 for Infants, €1,575 for Juniors and €2,115 for Seniors, in addition to tuition. Transport, extra supervision, optional classes and visits are separately charged. The bus table includes Alcobendas, Madrid, Colmenar, San Sebastián de los Reyes, Pozuelo, Las Rozas, Tres Cantos and Soto, but warns that route prices may be from the previous year.

Boarding, 2024/25

These annual totals combine education and residence and are the sums of the three published terms. Do not add day tuition again.

Year group Year total
Year 7 €32,940
Year 8 €33,255
Year 9 €33,315
Year 10 €34,200
Year 11 €35,025

Historical day fees are collected by direct debit in the first ten days of September, January and April. Boarding payments fall before 10 August, 10 December and 10 March. The documents warn that term fees are not returned for absence, illness or cancellation. Request the current withdrawal and payment conditions, especially if a posting may end mid-year.

Aid and support

The school advertises a Sir Roger Fry Scholarship, but the research baseline does not establish its eligibility rules. Ask admissions for the current criteria.

After confirming a Baby Education through Pre-Nursery place, parents may apply for the Comunidad de Madrid’s means-tested Beca Guardería. This is a regional nursery grant, not a discount for older pupils.

The school describes personalised learning support and requests relevant academic or psychological evaluations during admission. Share those reports and ask what the school can provide, including any additional charge; a general support statement does not establish an individual plan.

Our view

Choose Soto when you want a British day-and-boarding school with a choice of A-levels or IB and can manage the northern Madrid location. Compare Runnymede for a day-only A-level route, or American School of Madrid for a different educational model.
