Institut Montana Zugerberg is a co-educational day and boarding school at Schönfels 5, above the city of Zug. Day pupils can enter from age six, while boarding begins at age ten. The school offers both Swiss and international programmes, so an offer of admission should always name the child’s route as well as the grade.
Which academic route does it offer?
The bilingual primary school covers Grades 1–6 and follows the cantonal Lehrplan 21. German and English are used for teaching, but children do not need to be fluent in both at entry. The bilingual secondary programme covers Grades 7–9 and leads to a Swiss secondary-school certificate. Its published language expectation is stronger: pupils should have German and English around B1 and be ready to begin French.
The Swiss Gymnasium runs through Grade 12 and leads to the Swiss Matura. Families can choose a German-medium route or a bilingual German–English route. Fluent German is required for the German programme. The Matura normally gives direct access to Swiss universities, subject to the rules of the chosen institution and course.
The international school begins in Grade 6. Cambridge Lower Secondary covers Grades 6–8, followed by IGCSE in Grades 9–10. In Grades 11–12, students work toward either the full IB Diploma or Montana’s High School Diploma.
Those final qualifications should not be treated as equivalent. The school says its High School Diploma is recognised by many institutions in the United States and Canada, and by some private institutions in Europe. Families considering public universities in Switzerland or another specific country should obtain written recognition guidance before choosing it instead of the IB or Matura.
How does admission work?
Montana operates rolling admissions and recommends starting at the beginning of a semester. The process begins with an enquiry and a campus visit, trial day or video meeting. The school reviews academic history and assesses academic and language placement before recommending a programme and any support.
The offer letter states class placement and support. It remains valid for two weeks, according to the current process page. Families then return the enrolment documents and payments. The school assists boarders with visa applications where needed, but it does not arrange Swiss residence permits for day pupils or their families.
Discuss learning needs before the assessment. The fee page says that individual language or learning support may be recommended and priced after evaluation. A general place offer is therefore not yet a complete support or cost plan.
What are the boarding choices?
Boarding is available from Grade 5 or age ten. The school describes full boarding, weekly boarding and flexible stays for day pupils who need a week or weekend on campus. Ask which model is available for the child’s age and whether the fee includes weekends, holiday periods and travel.
The published full-boarding fee includes a shared room, five meals a day, supervision, weekday study time, short-term on-campus illness care, activities and sports facilities. Day fees include teaching, study-hall supervision and three meal breaks.
Day pupils commonly reach the campus via the Zugerbergbahn from Schönegg. The school describes the funicular journey as eight minutes and says it runs every thirty minutes during the day. Road access changes in winter and on weekends, so check the current route before choosing housing.
What does it cost?
The live fee page publishes general annual ranges but does not identify them as 2026 or 2026–27:
- day school, Grades 1–12: CHF 32,900–36,800 a year;
- boarding school, Grades 5–12: CHF 70,400–72,800 a year;
- flexible boarding: price on request.
The one-time admission fee is CHF 5,500 and includes the capital fee. The deposit is CHF 3,000 for a day pupil and CHF 5,000 for a boarder. Tuition is billed in two instalments at the beginning of each semester.
The ranges are not a grade-by-grade table. Ask which figure applies to the exact programme and year, and request every recommended support charge in writing. The page says deposits are refunded “in most cases” except where there are untoward reasons for leaving; ask the school to explain that condition before signing.
