Hutchesons’ Grammar School, often called Hutchie, is a co-educational independent day school for ages 3–18. Secondary pupils attend 21 Beaton Road, Glasgow G41 4NW. Primary is at 44 Kingarth Street, Glasgow G42 7RN.

It is a separate institution from The Glasgow Academy and The High School of Glasgow. Compare the schools on curriculum, entry year, support and the journey from home rather than treating all Glasgow day schools as interchangeable.

The school traces its foundation to 1641 and has educated girls since 1876. It has Nursery and Preschool, Primary and Secondary stages, with no advertised boarding provision.

Who it is for

Hutchesons’ suits families seeking English-medium day education and Scottish qualifications through the final senior year. It offers some subject routes that begin Higher work without taking the corresponding National 5 examination.

It is less suitable if the child requires boarding or continuity in an A-level or International Baccalaureate programme. Families with children at both sites should check the separate start and collection times.

Bursaries are S1 only. The fees page is blunt: not later Senior years, not Primary.

Two campuses and pastoral care

Open Day covers both Primary and Secondary. Visit the relevant stage and test the journey to its actual entrance, rather than judging both campuses from one visit.

The school describes pastoral care organised through pupil houses and activities in sport, art, performance and charitable work. Here, houses are school groupings, not boarding accommodation. Ask who would oversee the child’s wellbeing and any individual support.

Stages and Scottish qualifications

P1–P7 are the primary years; S1–S6 are the secondary years. The Nursery page describes 1,140 hours of local-authority partnership funding. Confirm the child’s eligibility and how funded hours apply to the chosen attendance pattern.

Main entry points are P1, P4, P7 and S1. The school says over 90% of preschool pupils continue into P1, limiting external places. S1 combines its own P7 pupils with a similar number from other schools.

The curriculum is broad in S1–S2, narrowing to seven or eight subjects by S4. Most pupils take National 5 examinations at the end of S4. Some begin Higher work earlier without taking National 5 in that subject.

Most S5 pupils take five Highers, chosen from about 23 subjects. The timetable allows six Highers. The school also describes late-day courses towards Higher without National 5; ask about their workload and eligibility.

Highers are important for Scottish university entry. Advanced Highers provide further specialised study. Older applicants should confirm subject continuity and the requirements of their intended university courses.

The school’s 2025 results report over 66% of Higher grades at A and 85% at A or B. Pupils took an average of five Highers; 24 achieved six As and one achieved seven. At National 5, 73% of grades were A.

These are historical school-reported outcomes, not a prediction for an individual child.

Admissions for 2027/28

Applications use the school’s online portal. The published Open Day for Primary and Secondary is 7 November 2026. Spring Open Mornings are planned for April 2027, with exact dates still to be announced in the existing research.

The entrance assessment is planned for January 2027. The admissions overview checked on 3 September 2026 had not specified the date.

The cited July 2025 admissions policy describes assessments in December and January before August entry, including a January day for external candidates. Late applicants may still be assessed if places remain.

Assessment varies by stage:

  • Preschool: a visit before an offer, without an assessment.
  • P1–P2: a visit and age-appropriate activities.
  • Upper Primary: a discussion with the deputy head, followed by computer-based reasoning tasks covering language, patterns, space and numbers. Short reading and writing tasks are also used.
  • S1–S2: an informal discussion and the same computer-based reasoning assessment. Current Hutchesons’ P7 pupils complete it in class.
  • S3–S4: a discussion, English reading analysis and composition, and mathematics with a calculator.
  • S5–S6: a discussion and consideration of predicted National 5, Higher or equivalent results. The school may request a reference and recent reports.

Bursaries

Bursaries are offered for S1 entry only, not Primary or later Senior entry. Awards may cover 100% of tuition or provide partial assistance. The school reports supporting about one in ten Senior pupils in a typical year.

Assistance is described as unlikely where combined income exceeds £65,000 or the family has significant assets. Almost all supported families still contribute. Awards exclude uniform, trips, transport, lunches and sundries.

Applications for August 2026 assistance are closed. The published cycle opens in October; applicants indicate interest on the online application. Confirm the next deadline because late completed bursary applications are not considered.

Published 2026–27 fees

The 2026–27 schedule includes 20% VAT. The figures below are alternative payment presentations, not charges to add together.

Stage Annual Termly Monthly over ten months
Primary 1 £15,822 £5,274 £1,582
Primary 2 £16,849 £5,616 £1,685
Primary 3–4 £17,481 £5,827 £1,748
Primary 5–7 £18,844 £6,281 £1,884
Secondary 1–2 £20,318 £6,773 £2,032
Secondary 3–6 £20,395 £6,798 £2,040

Displayed instalments are rounded and do not always multiply exactly to the annual figure. Confirm how any final adjustment is handled.

P6–S6 tuition excludes a pupil-device levy. The schedule refers families to a separate fee letter for device payment options. Nursery and Preschool funding is addressed through council partnership arrangements rather than a fee figure in this table.

The listed payment arrangements are:

  • A 4% reduction for full annual payment before the end of term on 26 June 2026. That deadline has passed.
  • Termly Direct Debit on 1 September 2026, 4 January 2027 and 1 April 2027.
  • Ten monthly Direct Debits on the first banking day from September to June.

Non-annual payments must be by Direct Debit. Tuition includes Scottish examination-entry charges and personal accident insurance.

The sibling reduction is 25% for the eldest of three full-fee pupils, or 50% for the eldest of four. Nursery-funded places do not count towards the three-pupil threshold. Bursaries cannot be combined with sibling discounts.

The older 2025–26 schedule gave S3–S6 tuition as £19,995. Use the newer £20,395 figure for 2026–27, together with the device levy and other applicable extras.
