The Glasgow Academy is a co-educational independent day school for ages 3–18. Its Senior School is at Colebrooke Street, Kelvinbridge, Glasgow G12 8HE. Younger pupils are served by three sites.

It follows the Scottish curriculum through National 5, Highers and Advanced Highers, rather than an A-level or International Baccalaureate route. It does not advertise boarding.

Who it suits

Consider the Academy if you want English-medium day education in Glasgow and the Scottish examination route fits the child’s plans. For a younger child, the choice of site may make the daily journey easier.

Senior pupils attend Kelvinbridge, so a convenient nearby prep site does not settle the longer-term commute. Check when the child would move and how progression is assessed.

The Academy is a separate school from The High School of Glasgow and Hutchesons’ Grammar School. Compare those options on the child’s entry year, curriculum, journey and support needs—not simply their Glasgow location.

Families requiring boarding should look elsewhere. Financial assistance also has a stage restriction: the Academy publishes bursaries for Prep 7 and Senior School, not younger years.

Three campuses

Newlands: prep provision 54 Newlands Road, Glasgow G43 2JG

The admissions information recorded on 3 September 2026 listed a Kelvinbridge Open Evening on 10 November 2026 and a Newlands Open Morning on 12 November 2026. Check the booking details and intended campus.

Stages and qualifications

The school covers Nursery and Kindergarten, Prep School and S1–S6, the six senior years. Prep 7 is the final preparatory year before S1.

National 5 qualifications are normally taken during the middle senior years. Highers are important for Scottish university entry, and Advanced Highers provide further specialised study. The required subjects and grades depend on the intended university course.

The Computing Science page describes lessons for all pupils in S1 and S2, followed by National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher options across S3–S6. Ask which combinations are available for the intended year.

Physical education is core from Nursery through S4 and is also offered as an examined subject at National 5 and Higher. Some academic guides in the existing research were still labelled 2025/26, so confirm the current course list for an older transfer.

Admissions and assessment

The published Senior and Prep entrance assessments for August 2026 entry took place on 23 January 2026, with outcome letters scheduled for 5 February. These are completed-cycle dates, not the next admissions timetable.

The entrance-exams page also describes occasional vacancies during the year. Ask Admissions about the proposed year group, assessment and any current place rather than assuming the closed main round excludes every transfer.

Nursery and Kindergarten readiness assessments run during the year across the three sites. The published birthday groupings are:

  • Birthdays from 1 March to 31 August: assessment in the autumn term.
  • Birthdays from 1 September to the end of February: assessment in the spring term.

The existing research did not establish the January 2027 assessment date. Obtain the next timetable before booking travel or preparation.

Bursaries

The bursary scheme offers 10–100% means-tested assistance for entry to Prep 7 and Senior School. Awards consider financial need and entrance-assessment results.

New applicants are asked to apply before the January entrance assessment. Applications for August 2026 entry were already closed when researched; the next cycle’s precise dates need confirmation.

Existing Prep 7 and Senior pupils whose financial need arises later can apply by mid-May each year. Awards are reviewed annually and are not announced publicly.

For 2024/25, the school reported £1,145,861 in means-tested bursaries, equal to 5.1% of income. It supported 111 pupils, or 11% of the eligible P7–S6 roll. These historical figures illustrate the scheme’s scale, not available awards for a new applicant.

Fees, inclusions and payment

The fees page identifies a tuition document for 2026/27. The existing research did not capture its amounts reliably, so this guide does not quote annual tuition.

The page says fees are set annually by the Governors of The Glasgow Academicals’ War Memorial Trust and include 20% VAT. Request the current schedule for the child’s stage rather than using the separate comparison table dated 2025/26.

Our take

The Academy is worth considering for a child seeking Scottish qualifications in a co-educational day school. Its three younger-year sites offer geographic choice, but families should plan for the eventual Kelvinbridge senior-school journey.
