Choosing an independent school in Glasgow

Glasgow’s three profiled schools are co-educational day schools following Scottish qualifications, but their campuses and entry arrangements differ.

The three Glasgow profiles are The High School of Glasgow, The Glasgow Academy and Hutchesons’ Grammar School. All are co-educational day schools that lead through Scottish National Qualifications to Highers and Advanced Highers.

This is not an IB-versus-A-Level search. The useful comparison is each child’s age, campus, entry assessment, support and total cost.

Campuses are not interchangeable

The High School has its Senior School on Crow Road in Anniesland and its Junior School in Bearsden. Its Transitus year is Primary 7 within the senior campus, so confirm which site an applicant would actually attend.

The Glasgow Academy’s senior campus is at Kelvinbridge. Its preparatory provision also uses Milngavie and Newlands sites. Hutchesons’ Primary is on Kingarth Street and its Secondary School is on Beaton Road, both on Glasgow’s south side.

A family with siblings can therefore face two school runs even within one school. Check the exact campus before making a housing decision; a city-wide average journey time would not answer this question.

Applying and budgeting

The pages currently advertise autumn 2026 open events for 2027 entry. The High School lists 3 October, Glasgow Academy lists 10 November at Kelvinbridge and 12 November at Newlands, and Hutchesons lists 7 November 2026. Recheck before travelling because event availability can change.

Hutchesons publishes £20,395 a year including VAT for S3–S6 in 2026–27, with a device charge still to add. The other schools’ current fee documents should be opened for the applicant’s stage rather than inferred from an older amount.

Bursaries do not operate identically. Hutchesons, for example, limits its means-tested bursary entry to S1. Ask each school when the financial assessment must be filed and whether it applies to the requested entry point.

A practical shortlist

Choose by campus and entry stage first. Then compare subject choices in the intended senior years, the way Scottish qualifications are scheduled, and what support is available. Ask for a written first-year cost that separates tuition from meals, transport, devices, trips and deposits.
