Ernst-Reuter-Schule Ankara (ERS) is the German Embassy school at Tunus Caddesi 56 in Kavaklıdere. It teaches from kindergarten through Grade 12 in a small, mainly German-language setting. Older pupils can progress to the bilingual International Baccalaureate known as the GIB.

The school’s nationality rule is decisive. Its current registration page says it cannot admit children who hold Turkish citizenship, including dual nationals. Check every citizenship the child holds before paying for translations or planning a move.

Education path

Kindergarten operates from 07:30 to 17:30 and includes meals. Primary covers Grades 1–4, normally with one class teacher across those years.

Lower secondary covers Grades 5–10 and has one class per year. Grades 5–6 form the orientation stage. From Grade 7, pupils follow Gymnasium, Realschule or Hauptschule expectations within the class. Gymnasium pupils begin French in Grade 7.

At the end of Grade 10, the possible German qualifications include the Hauptschulabschluss and the Mittlerer Schulabschluss (MSA). Only pupils with the required entitlement and academic preparation continue to the upper-secondary GIB.

The GIB covers Grades 11–12. German, history and biology are taught at Higher Level in German. English and mathematics are Standard Level subjects taught in English. The sixth subject is either beginner Spanish or physics in English. The programme also includes Theory of Knowledge, Creativity, Activity and Service, and an extended essay.

This is a bilingual German-led IB route, not a general English-medium Diploma. Ask where the child is likely to be placed in lower secondary and whether that route keeps the intended GIB subjects open.

Admission

The head decides admission, subject to space and the school’s legal eligibility rules. A September application joins the normal round only when the complete file reaches the school by 30 March of that year. Later or mid-year applications are considered only if places remain.

The file includes the application, the signed school agreement, the last two reports, birth certificate and passport copy. Families may also need custody documents, learning-support reports, a school-readiness certificate for Grade 1 and a school-type recommendation for Grades 7–10. The parents’ employment certificate is also requested.

A primary pupil without enough German may be admitted on probation. After six months, the head decides, following the class conference’s recommendation, whether the child is likely to reach the required level after a year. Parents may have to arrange extra private German tuition. This provision does not create an equivalent language-entry route for Grades 7–10.

When an offer is made, the admission fee is due within 14 days. The place is not secured until payment arrives, and the fee is not refunded if the family declines afterwards.

Fees for 2026–27

The official fee regulation labels all amounts as net euros. It says statutory VAT must be added and identifies the December 2025 rate as 10%.

Item Net fee Total if 10% VAT still applies
School admission €4,500 €4,950
Annual tuition, Grades 1–10 €10,500 €11,550
Annual tuition, Grades 11–12 €14,500 €15,950
Kindergarten/crèche admission €4,500 €4,950
Kindergarten/crèche, including meals €13,100 €14,410
Hort, excluding meals €2,900 €3,190
One after-school activity per half-year €200 €220
Annual family membership €185 €203.50

The VAT-inclusive figures are calculations using the rate printed in the regulation, not separate school quotations. Confirm the live rate and invoice before paying.

Tuition and kindergarten fees are billed twice, due 15 September 2026 and 15 January 2027. All payments are made in euros. The regulation offers a €50 reduction for paying the annual school or kindergarten fee in one instalment.

Self-paying families can apply for a 10% reduction for the second and each subsequent child. For the third and later children in Grades 1–10, the reduction is 25%. An additional 10% reduction requires five fully paid school years for that child; kindergarten does not count.

The school requires evidence of self-paying status, including an employer confirmation. If an employer meets only part of the cost, a reduction can be applied proportionately to the amount paid from the family’s own funds. Ask for the school’s written calculation.

On joining, a started month is charged in full. On withdrawal, fees remain due to the end of the relevant half-year and are not refunded. An interruption in attendance does not remove the payment obligation.

Late payment can trigger a €300 reminder fee after two weeks, followed by €500 after a further two weeks, both plus VAT. Continued non-payment can lead to exclusion.

Practical fit

The school’s own figures describe about 45 kindergarten children and 160 pupils in Grades 1–12. That small scale means a year group may have limited capacity and fewer parallel subject combinations than a large campus.

Compare BLIS if the child needs an English-medium route that admits Turkish citizens. Compare Lycée Français Charles de Gaulle for French national continuity. British Embassy School Ankara follows an English route but ends at age 16.

Before applying, confirm citizenship eligibility, available space, German readiness and the likely Grade 10 qualification. Then request a VAT-inclusive written fee total. Those questions determine fit more reliably than the school’s German-overseas label alone.
