The British School of Málaga (BSM) is a private day school for ages 3–18 in Cerrado de Calderón. It belongs to International Schools Partnership (ISP). The school is at Calle Centáurea 8, in eastern Málaga.
BSM is worth considering if you want an English-medium education leading to British qualifications while retaining Spanish study. Compare Lycée Français International de Málaga if continuity in the French system matters more. These are different curriculum choices, not interchangeable schools because they are nearby.
The school does not advertise boarding. Families need to plan daily transport and collection, including any paid after-school provision.
For an older applicant, start with the intended qualification and available subjects. The school’s Spanish department helps with Spanish qualification recognition and university applications, but families should confirm which requirements apply to their child’s previous schooling and intended degree.
Curriculum and qualifications
The school separates its provision into Early Years, primary, secondary and Sixth Form. Early Years covers Nursery and Reception; primary runs from Years 1–6. Secondary covers Years 7–11, followed by Sixth Form in Years 12–13.
Years 7–9 retain a broad curriculum, with English, mathematics and science alongside humanities, arts, computing, physical education and ethics. French or German begins in Year 7 and is taught from beginner level.
In Years 10–11, pupils prepare for International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) examinations. These are subject qualifications, not university-entry qualifications on their own. Alongside compulsory subjects, the school lists options across arts, business, computing, drama, humanities, communication, music and extended physical education. Ask which combinations can actually be timetabled for your child.
The secondary page describes Spanish language and literature, history and geography for Spanish pupils, supporting the Educación Secundaria Obligatoria (ESO) qualification at the end of compulsory secondary education. Non-Spanish-speaking international pupils can study Spanish as a foreign language. These provisions should not be assumed to produce the same qualification outcome for every entrant; confirm the requirements for your child’s record and language level.
Sixth Form pupils prepare three or four A levels, advanced subject qualifications normally taken before university. Options span sciences, mathematics, languages, humanities, business, arts and other subjects. The separately listed Cambridge Advanced English examination is a language qualification, not an additional A level.
Pupils seeking Spanish university entry can add preparatory Spanish subjects. The school says its Spanish department helps with Bachillerato recognition and university-access examinations. Ask for a written subject and recognition plan matched to the intended degree; admission is not guaranteed by attending BSM.
BSM advertises an A-level route, not the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma. The secondary page mentions IB as a possible next qualification after IGCSEs, not as a programme offered here. If remaining at one school for the IB Diploma is essential, choose a school that offers it.
Applying and planning the school day
Applications are accepted throughout the year, but this does not confirm a vacancy in every year group. The published process is:
- Contact admissions and arrange a visit or an online discussion.
- Discuss your child’s needs and provide a previous school report if requested.
- Attend a taster day or online interview if invited.
- If offered a place, accept the written offer within ten days and complete registration. The school says a registration fee is required to secure the place.
Before accepting, obtain the entry criteria for the intended year, any English assessment requirements, and confirmation of subject availability. The pages reviewed do not give a universal entrance-score threshold, waiting-list length or 2027–28 application calendar.
The usual school day is 09:00–16:00, with staggered arrival and departure times. Different stages have separate buildings and may use different entrances. Test the actual journey and collection arrangements for your child’s stage, especially if siblings finish at different times.
The school says a nurse is on duty throughout the day. Parents must complete the appropriate form for medication or treatment during school hours. Discuss support needs before accepting, rather than relying on a general statement that the school is inclusive.
English and additional learning support
Nursery teaching is in English. From Reception, British-curriculum teaching in English is complemented by Spanish language and cultural studies. This is not a promise of equal teaching time in both languages.
The language page says new pupils take an English assessment. The linked English as an Additional Language (EAL) policy describes support for reading, writing, listening and speaking, including withdrawal from some ordinary lessons. It was reviewed in December 2023 and due for review in December 2024; ask for its replacement.
That older policy identifies these secondary language levels for deciding support needs, not unconditional admission guarantees:
| Year |
Published English level |
| Year 7 |
A2 |
| Year 8 |
A2/B1 |
| Year 9 |
B1 |
| Year 10 |
B1/B2 |
| Year 11 |
B2 |
| Years 12–13 |
C1/C2 |
These are Common European Framework of Reference levels: A2 is elementary, B1 intermediate, B2 upper-intermediate, and C1/C2 advanced to highly proficient. The policy refers pupils below the relevant level in any of the four skills to additional support.
For new primary pupils below the year group’s English objectives, the policy makes the paid programme compulsory. It outlines 3–10 months for Years 1–2 and 12–18 months for Years 3–6, with one or two hours of daily withdrawal during parts of the programme. Later in-class support depends partly on capacity.
For secondary pupils, it describes a minimum academic year of paid support, usually two specialist hours weekly plus at least one hour of classroom support. French, German, history or geography may be displaced in Years 7–9. In Years 10–11, a language or, as a last resort, an option subject may be replaced. Confirm the actual timetable and exit criteria before accepting an examination-year place.
The Additional Learning Needs policy was reviewed in November 2023 and due for review in November 2024. It describes classroom adjustments, small-group interventions and more individual support, but makes provision dependent on needs and department capacity. It also allows non-admission or withdrawal where the school cannot meet a child’s needs.
Contract clauses 63–65 distinguish school screening from specialist diagnosis. Formal assessments may be at parents’ expense, and additional teaching can be charged separately. If the school concludes after consultation that it cannot provide adequately, clause 65 allows withdrawal without fees in lieu of notice. Disclose existing reports and obtain a written provision, cost and accessibility plan.
Fees and additional costs for 2026–27
The fee schedule lists two charges in addition to tuition: €1,100 registration for each new pupil and €1,100 annual enrolment for each pupil. Both are described as non-refundable. The contract uses different labels for enrolment and re-enrolment. Ask admissions to match each contractual charge to the fee schedule; do not assume that the different labels mean a third charge.
Tuition includes compulsory school lunch. The default arrangement is ten monthly direct debits from September to June. Contract clause 101 requires payment within the first five days of each month through a SEPA account, the European bank-payment system.
Annual tuition, 2026/27:
| Year |
Annual tuition |
| Nursery / Reception (3–4) |
€8,780 |
| Years 1–2 |
€9,530 |
| Years 3–4 |
€9,780 |
| Years 5–6 |
€9,980 |
| Years 7–8 |
€10,680 |
| Year 9 |
€10,850 |
| Years 10–11 |
€11,650 |
| Years 12–13 |
€12,050 |
A new Year 7 pupil would therefore have a calculated core first-year cost of €12,880: €10,680 tuition, €1,100 registration and €1,100 annual enrolment. This assumes a full year without discounts and excludes the additional costs below.
The schedule includes loan textbooks, curricular materials, digital licences and the school nurse. Accident insurance covers the school premises during the school day. It also includes the Additional Learning Needs department, but this is not a promise that every specialist assessment or individual support service is free.
Uniform is compulsory from Nursery to Year 11, and a purchased Chromebook is compulsory from Year 3 to Year 11. Neither purchase is included. External examinations and qualification recognition are also extra; the schedule does not give their prices.
English as an Additional Language (EAL) means support for pupils learning through English. The intensive programme for new pupils costs €1,150 annually in Years 1–2, or €2,200 in Years 3–9, payable monthly. Ask whether it is required for your child and when the charge ends.
The older EAL policy still quotes €2,000 for secondary support. Use the dated 2026–27 fee schedule for the published Year 7–9 price and obtain a separate current quote for Years 10–13, which that schedule does not price.
Some school-run clubs and ISP group programmes are included, while paid after-school activities are listed separately. The schedule also places some representative field trips in the included column but excludes school trips generally. Obtain a cost list for the activities and trips your child would actually join.
Transport and extended-day services
The bus prices are per term, not per year:
| Route |
Return |
One way |
| Within Málaga city |
€555 |
€345 |
| Outside Málaga city |
€600 |
€390 |
Separate September-only prices cover a full teaching month: €185 return or €115 one way within the city, and €200 or €130 outside it. Ask how September relates to the termly billing periods before calculating an annual total.
General after-school activities cost €145, €175 or €205 per term for one, two or three weekly sessions respectively. The corresponding prices for other activities, including judo, volleyball and basketball, are €170, €200 and €220. September-only provision with two weekly sessions costs €60 for general activities or €65 for the other category. Availability and the selected activity still need confirmation.
Breakfast or snack club has a separate termly scale. The lower combined rate applies when used with the bus or an after-school activity:
| Days per week |
Stand-alone |
Combined rate |
| 1 |
€65 |
€45 |
| 2 |
€110 |
€70 |
| 3 |
€155 |
€100 |
| 4 |
€185 |
€120 |
| 5 |
€200 |
€160 |
A single ticket costs €6, without a combined rate. Breakfast provision starts at 08:00; snack provision starts at 16:00. After-school activities normally run from 16:00 to 17:00. Confirm the exact collection time and whether you need one or both care services.
Discounts, late payment and withdrawal
The 5% annual-payment discount required payment before 31 July 2026; that deadline had passed by our 4 September review. The English schedule offers 50% off annual enrolment and tuition from the third child onward, but not registration. Confirm sibling eligibility and whether discounts can be combined.
A returned direct debit costs €20. The fee schedule says unpaid amounts become debt after ten days and attract 3% interest, without stating the interest period. Contract clause 105 specifies up to 3% per month, accruing daily, and collection costs. Ask which terms will apply to your agreement. An employer’s agreement to pay does not release parents from liability unless the school expressly agrees in writing.
The parent contract needs particular attention if a move is possible:
- Clause 88 requires 60 calendar days’ notice to cancel an accepted place, withdraw a pupil, leave after Year 11 or Year 12, or discontinue extra tuition.
- Clause 87 instead refers to notice before the first day of the pupil’s final term. Clause 101 also refers to a term’s notice when discussing annual-payment refunds. Ask the school to resolve these different deadlines in writing.
- Clause 89 defines fees in lieu of notice as the full current and following month’s fees, not a discounted parental contribution. Ask for a worked calculation for your proposed leaving date.
- Clause 90 limits cancellation before the agreed entry date to the lost registration and enrolment fees. If a new pupil does not start after that date, clause 91 adds a monthly tuition charge. Confirm how these provisions interact with the 60-day rule.
- For existing pupils leaving during the summer, clause 94 requires the withdrawal form by 31 July. Otherwise, it specifies a penalty equal to September’s monthly fee.
- Withdrawal requires the school’s form; simply stopping attendance or payment does not stop charges. Additional services generally require one month’s written notice under clause 98, whereas extra tuition appears under the 60-day rule.
For annual tuition paid upfront, clause 101 describes a refund of unused months after deducting the annual-payment discount and any fees in lieu of notice. Ordinary sickness or absence does not generally create a refund entitlement under the contract. Obtain a written cancellation and refund calculation before relying on a short placement.
Renewing the place
Contract clause 16 describes a February renewal letter. Parents must report non-renewal or difficulty paying within 15 calendar days of receiving it; otherwise the re-enrolment charge is applied. A place may be offered to someone else if payment is not made by 30 April.
The clause treats return of the first renewal payment within ten calendar days of receipt as termination without penalty. Later return or non-payment attracts compensation equal to the renewal fee. Ask the school to explain the relevant receipt date and process, and how this rule relates to the summer withdrawal deadline.
Residence and local care
The contract makes parents responsible for the child’s permission to live and study in Spain. Clause 28 refers conditionally to school visa sponsorship; it does not promise that BSM sponsors every applicant. It also claims fees in lieu of notice if visa refusal or revocation forces an early departure.
The contract says pupils must live with a parent or legal guardian during term, weekends and half-term holidays. The school must be told immediately if another adult provides term-time care. For a non-EEA pupil whose parents live abroad, it specifically requires an authorised local guardian and their details before the school year starts. EEA means European Economic Area. Parents remain responsible for holiday care and travel; confirm these arrangements before accepting.
Our take
Compare Lycée Français International de Málaga if maintaining French-system continuity is the priority. We would not choose between these curricula on an undated pass-rate headline: ask for the relevant cohort, subjects and year, and consider your child’s existing course.
The Málaga guide compares local options. The Spain guide explains the wider education choices.
