Deutsche Schule Izmir, or DSI, is a co-educational day school at Kuşcular Cd. No: 82, 35430 Urla, Izmir. It offers German education from kindergarten through Grade 10, followed by the two-year GIB Diploma in Grades 11 and 12.
The school describes itself as the İzmir branch of the Privatschule der Deutschen Botschaft Ankara. It is supported by Germany’s Central Agency for Schools Abroad and is not under Türkiye’s Ministry of National Education.
DSI does not offer boarding. Families need to resolve citizenship eligibility, German readiness, a place in the requested class and the full cost before treating it as a realistic option.
Citizenship eligibility needs written confirmation
The live admissions page says the school currently cannot admit Turkish citizens, including dual nationals who hold Turkish citizenship. A family cannot avoid that rule by applying with a different passport.
A separate official document creates a broader uncertainty. The school’s December 2025 language policy says that all DSI pupils must be German citizens. The live admissions page does not repeat that requirement.
These two statements are not equivalent. A non-Turkish child without German citizenship should obtain written confirmation of eligibility before preparing an application or making relocation commitments.
Kindergarten
The kindergarten accepts children from age two until school entry. Its page describes three groups with total capacity for up to 45 children. It follows the ZfA quality framework for German kindergartens and preschools abroad.
Primary school
Grades 1–4 follow German educational standards. German is the teaching language, while Turkish and English are taught from Grade 1.
Primary is a compulsory full-day programme. The published hours are 09:00–16:15 from Monday to Thursday and 09:00–14:30 on Friday.
The primary page says classes have at most 16 pupils, with an exception allowing 20. The admissions page instead describes one class per year group, with no more than 15 pupils in each class. Ask which limit applies to the requested year.
Secondary school
Grades 5–10 lead towards German lower-secondary qualifications and preparation for the GIB. The school says its KMK recognition covers the German Hauptschulabschluss, Realschulabschluss and transition to the gymnasiale Oberstufe.
An orientation stage for Grades 5 and 6 began in 2024/25. The secondary page lists English from Grade 5, French from Grade 7 and Turkish as an additional option.
The primary page already lists English from Grade 1. Ask whether “English from Grade 5” describes a new course level rather than a child’s first English lessons.
Grades 11 and 12: the GIB
DSI is an authorised IB World School for the Diploma Programme. Its upper-school route is the Gemischtsprachiges International Baccalaureate, or mixed-language IB Diploma. It is not a German Abitur.
The school’s current subject page gives this structure:
| Published subject |
Level and teaching language stated by DSI |
| German language and literature |
Higher Level |
| English |
Higher Level |
| Biology |
Higher or Standard Level, taught in German |
| Mathematics |
Standard Level, taught in German |
| History |
Standard Level, taught in German |
| Sixth subject |
Options listed include French, Business Management, Psychology, Global Politics, Theatre, and Sports, Exercise and Health Science |
The same page identifies Global Politics as Standard Level in English. It does not clearly state the teaching language for every other sixth-subject option.
The IB’s live record currently shows registered students in mathematics, business management, biology, German A, English B, sports science, theatre, history and Theory of Knowledge. It does not list every elective named by the school.
Ask which sixth subjects are actually running for the entrant’s cohort. Recognition of an IB Diploma for German university entry also depends on the chosen subject combination and applicable KMK rules.
How to apply
The admissions page asks for a complete file before it adds a child to the applicant pool and arranges an interview and school visit. The required documents are:
- A completed admission application.
- A copy of the child’s passport.
- The child’s Mavi Kart number or Yabancı Kimlik number.
- The child’s vaccination record and birth certificate.
- Copies of both parents’ passports.
The page does not publish an application deadline or promise a place in every class. Contact the school before submitting and ask whether the requested year is open.
Because teaching through Grade 10 is German-medium, discuss the child’s German and prior curriculum in detail. The public pages do not state a minimum German level, an entrance test or a grade-by-grade readiness standard.
Language and learning support
The school’s Deutschsprachiger Fachunterricht, or DFU, combines subject teaching with explicit support for academic German. It is aimed at pupils whose first language is not German and includes work with subject vocabulary, texts, discussion and presentation.
That approach is useful, but it is not evidence of a beginner-German admission route. The school’s language policy describes varied levels of German and classroom differentiation, while publishing no entry threshold.
School social work offers confidential guidance for pupils, parents and teachers. Its page also describes mediation, crisis support, prevention work and social-skills groups.
The site does not define specialist provision, accommodations or capacity for additional learning needs. Share reports before applying and ask what the school can provide in the relevant class.
Meals, transport and the school day
The cafeteria page describes daily meals, including at least one vegetarian option and a salad bar. It does not publish a current meal price or state whether meals are included in tuition.
The bus page describes transport offered by an independent operator. The school says it does not commission the driver and accepts no responsibility or liability for the transfer.
The operator sets routes, pickup points and times. The page currently lists services involving Kuşçular, Narlıdere/Balçova, Güzelbahçe and Urla/Zeytinalanı. It requires registration for a full school year.
Prices and final times are provided shortly before each school year. Obtain the current route, annual price, payment terms, supervision and liability position directly from the operator.
Fees and contract terms
The reviewed live pages do not publish a 2026–27 tuition schedule, deposit or other compulsory charge. Do not reuse a fee from a previous school year as if it were current.
Our take
DSI is a strong fit for an eligible family seeking a continuous German curriculum in İzmir and a mixed German-English IB Diploma. The small-class model and full primary day may also appeal, subject to an actual place.
It is a poor fit for a child with Turkish citizenship under the current published rule. It is also risky for non-German applicants until the citizenship conflict is resolved in writing.
Families needing beginner-German entry, boarding, specialist support or a published all-in price should not assume those needs are covered. Confirm them before choosing housing around an Urla commute.
Use the İzmir school guide for local planning and the Türkiye guide for the wider admissions context.
