American School of Valencia, usually called ASV, is a private, not-for-profit day school in the Los Monasterios development in Puçol. Nursery accepts children from 20 months, and the school continues through Grade 12.

This is not a Valencia city-centre campus. The journey from the family’s intended home deserves a weekday test before accepting a place. The school day is 09:30–16:30, and the school offers an optional bus service.

ASV suits a pupil who can learn mainly in English and wants an American school route. It also offers the IB Diploma in the final two years. It is less suitable when extensive learning support or boarding is essential.

Programme and qualifications

ASV combines an American curriculum with the subjects required by Spanish education authorities. Its website refers to Common Core standards in English and mathematics and to American science standards. These are curriculum frameworks, not leaving qualifications.

High School covers Grades 9–12. The school’s High School page describes these senior routes:

  • High School pupils work towards the American High School Diploma.
  • Grade 11 pupils may choose the two-year IB Diploma Programme (DP) alongside the school diploma requirements.
  • Pupils can obtain Spanish Bachillerato certification through the homologation process when they complete the specified Spanish language, literature, history and geography requirements.

The IB directory confirms that ASV is a private, co-educational day school authorised for the Diploma Programme. Its authorisation dates from April 2004. ASV is not listed there as a PYP or MYP school.

Spanish certification is therefore conditional, not automatic. A late secondary entrant should obtain a written credit and subject review. The review should name every qualification the pupil can realistically complete before leaving.

ASV is registered in Spain as a centro extranjero, or foreign-system school. Middle States granted seven-year accreditation in 2020. The school says that cycle lasts until May 2027 and that its next review was being prepared.

Language and learning support

English is the main teaching language. Spanish, Spanish social studies and world-language lessons are exceptions. Spanish starts in Prekinder 1, Valencian in Grade 1, and pupils choose French or German in Grade 6.

Previous Spanish is not an admissions requirement. Grades 1–12 have daily Spanish at native-speaker or additional-language level. Newcomers without Valencian study an introductory course, but that adjustment may affect Spanish qualification planning.

The English threshold becomes much stricter with age:

  • Some English is preferable for Preschool entry.
  • A beginner or intermediate Elementary applicant may receive conditional admission with additional paid academic support.
  • Middle and High School applicants must demonstrate strong English in reading, writing and speaking.

ASV says that special-needs support is very limited. Its public sources do not define the conditions it can support or publish a support tariff. Submit reports early and require a written provision plan, cost and review point before paying admission charges.

The High School counselling service covers personal, social and emotional guidance. That service should not be treated as evidence that the school can provide specialist learning or therapeutic support.

Admissions for 2027 entry

ASV accepts applications throughout the year. It has no fixed application deadline, but entry depends on space, academic suitability and the school’s ability to meet the pupil’s needs.

The school warns that most grades are often full. It usually learns more about the next year’s vacancies after re-enrolment in March. A place may still become available as late as September.

The process is:

  1. Submit OpenApply and pay the non-refundable €150 application fee.
  2. Provide up to three years of signed or stamped reports, where appropriate, plus available standardised-test results.
  3. Arrange official English or Spanish translations for documents written in other languages.
  4. Complete any interview and assessment requested by ASV. Testing can cover English, mathematics, Spanish where relevant, and MAP reading and mathematics.
  5. If the child is abroad, an approved staff member at the current school may supervise the assessment.
  6. Accept an offer and submit the required documents and payments within ten days. Otherwise, ASV may move the application to the waiting list.

Testing in Valencia normally takes three to four hours. A decision usually takes two to four weeks after review begins, but peak periods and follow-up checks can extend that time.

Placement follows the pupil’s previous completed grade, not birth year alone. Mid-year entry is possible when space exists. An IB candidate receives individual review because changing programme after Grade 11 starts can be difficult.

ASV considers assessment results, school records, conduct, grade and subject space, English and family alignment with its mission. It also gives consideration to siblings, alumni connections and international or native-English-speaking families.

Published 2026/27 cost

The current detailed schedule applies to new pupils enrolling in 2026/27. No 2027/28 prices were public at review, so a 2027 applicant should not budget from these figures without an updated offer.

  • Nursery–Kinder: €7,427 for tuition and lunch, plus €366 for materials and textbooks.
  • Grades 1–5: €7,878 for tuition and lunch, plus €384 for materials and textbooks.
  • Grades 6–8: €9,291 for tuition and lunch, plus €552 for materials and textbooks.
  • Grades 9–10: €9,516 for tuition and lunch, plus €552 for materials and textbooks.
  • Grades 11–12: €9,862 for tuition and lunch, plus €552 for materials and textbooks.

The combined tuition-and-lunch charge is compulsory. It is billed in ten equal instalments from September to June. Grade 12 pays nine instalments from September to May.

The school does not reduce the charge for short teaching months or for choosing not to use lunch. A medically prescribed special menu is included. The current policy also provides no lunch refund during an authority-ordered confinement.

Materials are invoiced in July. A later entrant pays the full annual materials charge on registration. Some personal stationery remains the family’s responsibility.

Admission, capital and shareholder charges

Every newly admitted pupil pays the €1,500 capital fee. The school’s headline table calls it non-refundable, but the detailed schedule provides a limited pre-start refund scale after the statutory cancellation period:

  • Before February preceding the school year: 100%.
  • February through May: 50%.
  • June through August: 0%.
  • After the school year starts: 0%.

Every pupil also pays an annual enrolment charge. Returning families are invoiced once in March; a later entrant pays when registration is formalised.

The fee route depends on the intended length of enrolment:

  • More than four school years: buy one €2,500 share and pay €289 annual enrolment. The intended shareholder must hold a valid Spanish DNI or NIE.
  • Four school years or fewer: pay €1,250 annual non-shareholder enrolment.

Earlier non-shareholder enrolment fees are not credited if the family later buys a share. Buying a share provides no right to earnings and creates no general repayment obligation for the school.

The schedule says the company law, school statutes and a repurchase policy govern the share. That repurchase annex is missing from the published PDF. Obtain the statutes and signed repurchase terms before treating €2,500 as recoverable.

Discounts and additional charges

ASV publishes sibling reductions, not a general means-tested financial-aid scheme. For billing, its definition applies only where both parents jointly hold all parental authority for the family unit.

  • The third enrolled sibling pays no annual enrolment fee and receives 10% off the tuition component.
  • The fourth and each later sibling pays no annual enrolment fee and receives 50% off the tuition component.

The reductions do not cover compulsory lunch, capital, materials, books or bus service. Ask ASV to calculate the reduction because the public annual table combines tuition and lunch.

The optional annual bus charge is €1,881. It is non-refundable. Exceptional single journeys depend on space and cost extra.

Less than half a month’s bus use is charged at 50% of the monthly rate; more than half is charged at 100%. Rejoining or reserving after term starts can trigger up to two half-month charges for unused months.

An authority-ordered confinement brings no bus refund for the first affected month. The second month follows the partial-month rules unless ASV cancels the route.

Grade 12 can add:

  • €57 ASV UNED charge, excluding each pupil’s own UNED accreditation, administration and PCE charges.
  • Official IB examination fees plus up to 15% school administration, payable before exams and non-refundable.
  • €195 graduation pack, invoiced in May.
  • Requested ASV-format documents at €18, or €40 for a special format.

Authorised activities, trips and the yearbook may be added to monthly invoices. The family should receive the amount, billing date and refund status before authorising each item.

Cancellation, withdrawal and payment risk

After school begins, a permanent withdrawal has substantial consequences. ASV keeps enrolment and materials charges, collects every monthly invoice already incurred, and raises a further €1,600 withdrawal charge per pupil.

Residence, care and daily life

ASV has no boarding and does not arrange host families. Every applicant must live with a parent or legal guardian. Admission therefore does not solve accommodation, guardianship or Spanish residence permission.

Spanish immigration rules distinguish family residence, post-compulsory study and organised school-mobility routes. The requirements are not interchangeable. A non-EU family should confirm its own route with the relevant Spanish consulate before relying on a school offer.

Our take

ASV is most convincing for a pupil who wants an English-medium American pathway and can keep the IB option open until Grade 11. Its Spanish route is valuable, but only when the child can complete the required subjects.

The main cautions are practical and contractual. Support is limited, many grades can be full, and leaving after term begins costs €1,600 per child beyond charges already due.
