American School of Milan, a day campus in Noverasco that will not board your child

The American School of Milan is a co-educational day school on Via Karl Marx 14, 20073 Noverasco di Opera, south of the city. Founded in 1962 in Sesto San Giovanni with 17 students, it now describes itself as the most diverse international school in Milan: about 880 students, more than 70 countries, more than 100 full-time faculty, on 9 acres. A 2023–24 prospectus still in circulation said about 915. Treat 880 as the current about-page snapshot.

The 2025–26 Parent-Student Handbook is the document that matters more than the lawn. ASM is a day school without boarding facilities. Students must live with a parent or a designated adult guardian at all times, in a location within commuting distance. Legal-guardianship papers are required if the child is not with a parent. If both parents are living and only one signs, the school may ask for custody documents.

If the Milan posting has not yet found a flat, this is not the campus that absorbs that problem.

It is a non-profit association under Italian law, governed by an elected Board of Trustees drawn from the Association. Tuition payment makes each parent a member, with a vote at general assemblies held twice a year. The school’s mission line is “curious learners, critical thinkers and global citizens.” The values printed on the about page and in the handbook are Respect, Curiosity, Courage, Integrity and Kindness.

Who it is for

Families who want an English-speaking American-style day school south of Milan, with an MSA high-school diploma and the IB Diploma in Grades 11–12, and who will actually live in commuting distance.

Admissions says it seeks internationally minded, well-rounded students who can navigate an English academic environment, and families who choose a non-profit “for their ethos.” That is the school’s filter, not a guarantee of a seat. Grades 8–11 had a waitlist on the apply page at research time.

It is not a liceo that happens to teach in English. Italian Terza Media has been described in older ASM materials as available in middle school; the 2025–26 handbook we extracted does not reprint that programme in the sections we read. Ask whether Terza Media or the Italian Prep Program is still running in this Grade 8, and what “Idoneità” on the pay-online page means for your child.

Students who will be over 19 at graduation are not enrolled. Children who entered the Italian system a year early (la primina) are usually placed by ASM’s age chart, not by the Italian year they just left.

The campus you can actually picture

Noverasco is Opera, not the Duomo. Parking is on the public streets of Via Karl Marx; illegally parked cars may be towed. That sentence is in the handbook because parents park badly.

The about page names state-of-the-art science labs, two full-sized American gymnasia, a tennis court, a large grass soccer field, a library of 27,000 volumes plus e-books (the homepage also says 24/7 access and individual study rooms), and a 500-seat auditorium from 2019. Elementary uses iPads; a 1:1 laptop programme starts in Grade 6. The school also names 3D design, robotics, digital art and photography, and film in a modern studio. Campus-wide Wi-Fi.

Sports travel is real: ASM belongs to the European Sports Conference; teams go to Spain, Switzerland, France and the Netherlands. Other named activities: swimming, golf, tennis, Model United Nations, National Honor Society, ABRSM, string orchestra, rock and jazz band, yearbook, chess, rock climbing.

Ask to see an ordinary Grade 5 classroom and the pickup line at 16:05, not only the auditorium.

The academic year aims for about 180 days, American-shaped, bent around Italian national holidays and external exams. The school “generally start[s] September 1st or very close to that date.”

How the day is organised

Pre-K through Grade 2 follows that chart strictly. From Grade 3, previous school, calendar, maturity and English can move a child, still close to chronological age. High school placement also looks at credits already earned.

Early Childhood / Kindergarten. No formal home learning. Reading at home, in English or the family’s language, is encouraged.

Elementary, Grades 1–5. Seesaw is the learning platform. Home learning about 20 minutes daily in Grades 1–2, 30 minutes in Grades 3–5, including reading. Italian Prep adds about 15 or 20 minutes. MAP testing includes Language Usage in Grades 3–9.

Upper School, Grades 6–12. Schoology. 1:1 laptops from Grade 6. Mid-semester arrivals get a half-day orientation: lunch card, schedule, laptop. Upper School students may leave campus only with emailed parent permission and a gate pass. Teachers will not assign holiday work except to IB Diploma students.

Grades 11–12. The IB Diploma has been offered since 1983. IBO re-authorisation was last completed in 2021–22, the handbook says, on a five-year cycle. About 95% of seniors complete the full Diploma, the about page says; results “consistently surpassed world averages” in pass rate and points. That is the school talking about itself. Seniors sit the external IB assessments. CAS runs about 18 months; the handbook says there is no hourly quota, but students must work all three strands and reflect.

The ASM / MSA High School Diploma is what graduates hold. Approximately 95% also finish the full IB. The two are designed to overlap. Ask the IB coordinator what a Diploma-only or courses-only path looks like if the full Diploma is too heavy — that is a counselling conversation.

Experiential Learning Week is a named annual block of trips. Curriculum day trips happen through the year. Service learning is described as core in High School.

Languages

Instruction is in English. On entry, every student is assessed in speaking, listening, reading and writing. Beginners and intermediate English Language Learners get small-group or one-to-one specialist time. The handbook cites the usual two-year basic / five-to-seven-year academic timeline. In Grades 9–12, students on the ELL modified grade scale do not follow the ordinary percentage scale for those classes — read the live handbook paragraph with the counsellor if that is your child.

Italian is the host-country language the school respects; the handbook allows English or Italian as the operating-system language on a non-school laptop. Second languages named in older prospectus text include Italian, French and Spanish. Ask which languages are actually timetabled in this Grade 7.

How a child actually gets in

Applications for the current year are rolling if a seat exists. Upper School joiners mid-year get whatever courses are still open. Decisions usually come within three weeks of a complete file. Confirm acceptance and the enrolment contract within five working days.

€300 application fee, non-refundable, paid in the online system.

Upload, in English or with official translation:

• School reports for the past two years (high school must include transcripts from Grade 9)
• Passport or birth certificate
• Teacher and principal/counsellor recommendations, sent from the checklist
• Psycho-educational reports and ILPs/IEPs if they exist
• Health form (allergies, diet)
• Immunisation record

Grades 4–12 take an online MAP test in Maths and English after applying. The school says results do not determine admission. Grades 9–12 are interviewed by the Admissions Director (the apply page names Dr. Denise Buren, dburen@asmilan.org).

Learning-needs files take longer. Enrolment is not confirmed until the Learning Needs team has decided it can staff the need. Sometimes placement waits until after re-enrolment (March–April), so the school can see how many support seats exist. ASM “maintains an average of around 10% of students with diagnosed learning needs in each grade” and says it cannot support more, because support teachers are assigned by grade. Hold the current school until confirmation.

IB Diploma accommodations require current English-language psycho-educational evaluations. All accommodations run through assigned case managers.

Re-enrolment is a February commitment plus a Re-Enrollment Fee; completing the form creates the invoice. Report cards, transcripts and diplomas are not released until fees are paid (By-Laws, Article 4). Early-departure money is in those same by-laws; ask finance for the current paragraph rather than guessing from a handbook cross-reference that ate its own link.

Money, as far as the school will print it

The fees page offers “Download Tuition, Fees and Building Fund 2026-27.” The amounts were not in the HTML. We will not invent them. Download that PDF, or write to admissions@asmilan.org / +39 025300001 (weekdays 08:30–16:30).

What the public pages do say:

• ASM is non-profit; tuition is meant to cover operations. A separate Fund for Excellence pays for projects beyond the daily curriculum — more than 100 projects over ten years, the FFE page says.
• Payment plans: annual, semester, or monthly.
• Sibling discounts exist; percentages are not in the HTML.
• Merit scholarships and need-based aid exist; amounts are not in the HTML.
• Extra fees exist for enrolment, technology and extracurriculars.
• Parents pay “all school fees and … building and maintenance fund charges” (By-Laws, Article 5).

A first-year Grade 6 is application + whatever the 2026–27 PDF calls admissions, building fund and tuition + laptop life + Experiential Learning Week. We will not add a euro total without that PDF as text.

Support, and the 10% the school already named

ASM is inclusive up to the staffing model it publishes. Ten per cent per grade is a capacity rule, not a slogan. Withholding learning-need documents is how files go wrong; the apply page is the ACS-style warning in milder language: hold the other school until ASM has confirmed it can staff the need.

Counsellors are the first call for social-emotional work. The nurse administers medicine only with a physician’s written authorisation. Italian law requires a physical for sport; doctors come to campus or you do it privately. Italian mandatory vaccinations apply; WHO schedules are “strongly encouraged.”

What to ask on the stairs

Ask whether Grades 8–11 are still waitlisted. Ask how a child who lives in the centre reaches Noverasco at 08:00 in the rain. Ask whether Terza Media or Italian Prep is on offer this year. Ask how many Grade 11s are on the full IB versus courses only. Ask what the 10% learning-support cap means for this diagnosis. Ask for the 2026–27 tuition PDF in the same email as the tour. Ask what happens if the posting ends in March. Ask to see Grade 5 and Grade 9, not only the 500-seat hall.

If you might stay in Italy, ask what the MSA diploma and the IB Diploma each do at an Italian public university, and whether idoneità is a document you need.

What we are not claiming

We are not saying ASM is the best school in Milan. We are not guessing a waitlist beyond the school’s own Grades 8–11 note. We are not inventing 2026–27 tuition. We are not treating a 95% IB completion rate as your child’s result. Older accreditation pages have mentioned CIS and NEASC; the current about page leads with MSA and the IB. Confirm the live stamps.

Read the current handbook and write to admissions@asmilan.org before you resign a flat in another country. This is a map. Via Karl Marx still has to be the right Tuesday.
